  1. My next question is about the effects of temperature on the chamber pressure. I'm gonna try 7gr of AutoComp next, but how much closer to the SAAMI max are we when we Chrony at 35 degrees and then compete on a 90 degree day? My average spread at 6.9gr of AutoComp made major PF even if I averaged the three lowest recorded velocities out of 10 shots. Anyone know where I can find data on the chamber pressure rise when you test at a lower temperature and compete at a much higher temperature?
  2. A combo like (180 bullet/Titegroup) might be fine in a limited .40 gun, but Titegroup is near the top of the chart for fast burning powders. Fast burning powders don't work well with comps on the barrel. I need a slower burning powder that produces lots of gas to run the comp. Compared to limited guns, comps change the muzzle flip vector to more straight back than up and needs lots of gas to work well. The .40 is a pretty snappy caliber anyway and also produces more felt recoil than a 9mm or a 38SC. That's why I'm looking for less recoil from a lighter bullet and more powder. Longshot powder, on the chart, is a little faster burning, than say, 3n38 which may be my next powder if AutoComp doesn't work out. Longshot is also a spherical powder, and I think from the data on the average spherical powder that I've been reading about, it tends not to have burn retardant added to the recipe to slow down the burn rate. When I’m using a powder drop I really like spherical powders, but I've found in my ARs, like Mr. Stoner said, it's dirty and gunks up the works. AutoComp supposedly was designed for compensated barrels to burn slower and produce more gas to run the comp. The problem I'm having is that it's so new (only been around for about 3 years) there's very little reloading data available and I haven't found any on lead bullets using AutoComp.
  3. I started collecting my own data. I called Winchester... no help there. They suggested using Laser Cast data for 5.2-5.8gr of AutoComp. That wouldn't even cycle the slide. I contacted Rainier Ballistics and they gave me 6.0-7.0gr AutoComp and thought about 6.5gr would be a good starting point. I had to go up to 6.9gr to make major power factor consistently. Accuracy was awful. I contacted Rainer again and they said accuracy on their bullets is directly related to the crimp. They said not to crimp the case. I'll try again at 6.9gr and 7.0gr without any crimp the next time and see if the accuracy improves. If the accuracy doesn't improve, I may forget the Autocomp and try some 3n38.
  4. This is why you never use load data from memory. I looked at the Hogdon data again and my 20% under max was actually 7.6 grn, cause the max load was 7.8 not 7.4. I did print it out and recorded my actual recipe on the printout. I think someone posted some other data, but I can't find it with the search feature.
  5. Oops, just looked at the Lyman book and it doesn't have Autocomp data and Speer doesn't either. I remembered that's why I used the Winchester data.
  6. I tried some W Autocomp in my G22 open pistol this weekend behind a 155 grn Rainier bullet. I started with 7.3 grn, that's 20 % under Winchester's max load. The bottom load data was 7.0 and top 7.4. The results were awful. It was so bad I though my sight had come loose. I ran some WM Winchester white box 165 grn bullets through the gun to see if it was the sights. Groups went back to normal. I'm not sure where to go from here. Rainier recommends using lead bullet data. I was using Winchester's data, and their only bullet option was HDY XTP. I have a Lyman and Speer manual with lead data. Would changing to lead bullet data make the accuracy that much better? I could use some help on this load.
  7. I know the .40 isn't the best caliber for an open gun, but has anyone found a bullet weight/powder recipe for a G22 with a comp that works for them?
  8. Brad put on a great match at Sparta today. We had enough shooters for three squads. Thanks Brad! PS - Even with the rain, I made it home in just under 4.5 hours.
  9. Thanks! Yes, I did see the date. I can't do Sunday, that's why I wanted to verify the match. I'll have to make the next one. I hope you guys have a great match and can do it again!
  10. Heard there's a new 3gun match at the Sparta Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL this weekend (Sat, Oct 29). Can anyone confirm this and provide stag info and round count?
  11. Knight's vertical grip has a lot going for it in 3gun. It's not as bulky and I haven't really given it much attention, till now. I use a vertical grip on my Saiga 12. It gives me a little more purchase under recoil. I opened up the gas ports but haven't added mid ports to the barrel.
  12. Oops, Did I forget to mention I was shooting open this weekend? My bad! It's just going to be poppers, so I don't think l'll really need a bipod. I've been wanting an excuse to research which pod folks like best and our season ending annual 3gun match this weekend peaked my interest again. Thanks for the URL on the clones. That maybe a great option for the amount of long shots we take around here.
  13. HI Guys, Most of the matches around here don't shoot much over 50 yards with the rifle. I have a match Sunday with a 200 yard stage. I'm thinking about mounting a Harris S-BR 9". I'd be interested in hearing what other shooters are using for bipods. Thanks!
  14. I bought my first Glock used. It was a G19 and I bought it a few years ago. I was looking for the age of the gun by serial number when I came upon an article about issues with some Glock frames cracking at the slide insert. My G19 serial number was one in that range with the issue. I contacted Glock and they said to send it in and they'd replace the frame at no charge. This was amazing to me! I bought it used and they were going to replace the frame at no charge to me. After about 3 weeks, and not hearing anything, I called and spoke to a guy in at Glock in Smyrna. We had a great chat. Turns out we both grew up in the same area. He said the issue was with the larger caliber guns with high round counts and mine was probably okay, but they wanted to replace all frames from that run. Anyway, he said cause I wasn't bugging him about my gun would there be anything I wanted done to it while they had it. I said, well, the night sights are a little dim, the trigger spring seems a little weak and the recoil spring probably has 50K rounds on it. He said, no problem. They replaced all those parts at no charge and even inclluded a new carry case. It didn't come with a case when I bought it. I have used that gun for years in local matches and it's my favorite gun. Needless to say, I love all my Glocks and I still have that one.
  15. I'm getting ready to replace the sights on my new G17 gen4. I'm planning on using this gun in Limited division. After doing a search for replacement Glock sights, and not seeing anthing definative, I'd be interested in your thoughts on these or other sight combinations for Limited. Thx!
  16. That's what I'm talkin 'bout!
  17. I picked up a Gen4 G17 for limited. I talked to the Glockworx folks and they say guys are using their Zevtech magwells on the Gen4s without adding a backstrap. I like mine without the backstrap. I also saw a thread on another forum that said they couldn't get the Zevtech magwell to work on the Gen4 frame. Before I drop $110 bucks on something so new, I'd really like to hear from other shooters that have used this magwell on their Gen4 frame. Thanks!
  18. Last update was in April, '11. Status update on the G17 Gen 4 Ice magwells, please?
  19. When I run open, I use my Saiga 12. When I run limited, I run my Benelli M1 Super 90. Works for me.
  20. Thanks for the replies. One of the guys I shoot with is going to help me mount a HIVIZ front sight. I'll see how it patterns with that first. If it works well, I'll use it this season. The Tru Glo clamp-ons do look interesting.
  21. I've been searching for a topic on iron sights for the Benelli vent rib barrel. Not much has popped up. For 3gun, what's everyone doing for iron sights on their Benelli vent rib barrels?
  22. I'm looking at buying a new auto-loader. I'd really like to hear from folks already using these shotguns on what they like about the shotgun and what they don't like. The Benelli M2 Tactical seems to be a great choice, but it doesn't come with a mag extension and only holds 6 shots. The FN SLP Mark 1 9 shot has a lot more features and looks like it's ready to go for about the same price. I read in one add that it has a rifled barrel. Is that a good or bad thing for the shot shell stages? The FM SLP Police Defense only holds 7 shots, but it too has a lot of features the M2 doesn't. Does the FN use a gas or recoil operation? I couldn't find any info on its auto system. Any other advice good or bad would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input.
  23. I'm not trying to highjack your thread, but I'm looking into do the same thing you are doing. I was wondering why the G35 instead of the G22? I thought the big slide on the G35 might slow down the cycle time. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the G35 vs the G22.
