  1. I am starting to get frustrated and disappointed in myself because up to 15 yds I am some what accurate but anything past I can hit the target but no where near where I "thought" I was aiming. It's frustrating that I'm not hitting what I'm aiming for and makes me second guess if I should do practical shooting. I like to be the best i can be and when i struggle, like i have then it gets frustrating...... Today at 7-15yds i seemed to hit left of where i was aiming mostly and at 25yds i was all over. :(

What am I doing wrong? Am I just a horrible shot? Any tips out there for a rookie?

  2. I am really thinking about reloading now...You have all convinced me  !!!!!!!

What would be a good setup for a beginner shooting 9mm only.....so far? I've seen Lee reloaders for around $150 (everything included pretty much) but should I just bite the bullet (no pun intended) and get a Dillon SDB or 550b?

I saw on amazon that there is a case tumbler kit: Frankford Armory tumbler with separator, 3lbs corn cob finish and 4oz brass polisher. Is this a good deal/product?

I've been saving my brass so I don't need to buy brass but I've seen CCI and Federal Primers for about $30/1000.

Where can I get cheap bullets?

    Whats a good powder.

I'm going to be shooting production and limited 10 since i live in Cali and 10rd mags are the law.

    Anything else lol? B)

Just for fun when did you start reloading?

  3. I just got my xd last week and i have put about 500rounds through it. Is it to early to give it a good cleaning? It's shooting pmc bronze and reloads i got at a local gun show. (9mm)

How often do you give your guns a thorough cleaning with lube and oil and solvent?

    newbie here!

  4. If I where you I would post an ad on Craigslist for an RCBS single stage press. You should be able to buy one under $50. You can buy a used set of dies for around $25 or a new set of RCBS carbide dies for $50. There are all kinds of places to find a scale, search around, you might even be able to get a used one on CL. If you can get lucky you can probably find a whole kit for under $100 that someone has had lying around for years. Don't worry about putting the money out, you should be able to get it back out when it is time to upgrade. I wouldn't be afraid at all reloading on something 30+ years old, it will work just fine even if you have to knock the rust off.

Save all the brass you can find, all calibers. You don't have to tumble your brass before reloading it, especially if it is the shiny "new" once fired brass. You can pickup a tumbler pretty cheap and may be a able to find a used one on CL. Just don't put an ad on Craigslist for a Brass vibrator, you will get the wrong crowd! You can find all kinds of load info on the web, try hodgdon.com (this should save your from buying a manual). If you can find Winchester 231(powder) I would start with that or maybe Clays, Clays is pretty cheap and that sounds like what you need right now, cheap. You don't need a powder measure, you just need a spoon, a bowl, a scale, and a lot of time.

Don't worry about buying primers in bulk online and having to spend a bunch of money upfront, you should be able to find a sporting goods store somewhere that sells them buy the 100 pack. Find that place and buy a 100 pack every time you go by. You probably spend more at Starbucks than you can for 100 primers. Bear Creek Bullets is somewhere in Cali, I would call them and see if they are anywhere near the area or maybe someone you know drives by? At worst you can buy 9mm for under $40/500 bullets.

It is expensive at first and even though it is much, much, less expensive than factory loaded ammunition, you will spend more money reloading than buying loaded ammo as you will shoot more!

Lastly, try to find a mentor. He will save you a lot of money. There should be some kind of state/regional/local forum where you can find a mentor. You are looking for the guy who is 60+ years old, built his own home by hand, is a master carpenter but was never a carpenter, and has never taken his truck in for an oil change (he has always done it himself).

I started out pretty much the same way, there is always time to upgrade. It would be great to start out with the Cadillac but the old beater Chev pickup will get you where you need to go too. Good Luck!

    Thanks alot!

  5. I first want to say thanks for all of those who replied to my other topic! I really appreciate it!

How can i get into reloading? I have a .22 sig mosquito which i know you can't reload and I have a Springfield XD9 (9mm) which is such a great gun. I'm close to going to Samuel Merrit (one of the top Nursing schools in California) so I can't spend tons of money on top notch presses and stuff. I live in the bay area and the closest store where there is a selection of more than 5 different ammo's is 40-50 min away plus $5 bridge toll. I just bought 1000 9mm rounds for $175 at a Gun Show 2 weeks ago. Gun shows and online are really only my options for buying 9mm ammo.

What is a good press to begin with? I know the Dillon 550b is the best for most people. Where is a good place to get primers, gun powder casings and bullets? I looked around and Midwayusa.com seemed to be the only place that had primers. I added up all the components and it added up to where 1000 rounds would cost over $300 which doesn't seem very economical for me when i got 1000 for $175 about.

Should I pick up my brass and start saving it up? How do you clean it up other than a tumbler?

Are there good beginner kits. For a while i will only be reloading 9mm since that is all i own. I do think reloading will be fun and a great stress reliever and because i do want to shoot alot and do ton's of competitions it will be beneficial.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

  6. From a totally different angle...What caliber and what type of gun?

If you are shooting a major caliber the difference in recoil can be substantial between factory and hand loaded ammunition.

I think most shooters find it easier to shoot a good hand load than factory as it can be "tailored" to fit your particular preference as to how the gun recoils.

    .02

    I'm shooting a springfield xd9 (5" barrel). It's a 9mm

  7. I was thinking about reloading my own ammo but was wondering if it is truly worth it in today's economy. I live in Cali and I have tried looking for used presses but can't seem to find any for sale. I also don't really know where to look. Is it worth getting a press, bullets, casings, primers, powder and start reloading my own ammo? Some people say yes it is and some say no it isn't so I'm not sure. I have currently gotten once fired reloads from the local gun show but for me its pretty expensive because it's like $200 for 1000 rounds but they are decent reloads, never had a problem with them and thats the cheapest anywhere.

I shoot a springfield xd9 5" barrel. I am 5 min away from my local range and 45 min plus bridge toll away from a decent gun store. Living in the bay area makes it hard to buy ammo and supplies. Whats a good beginner press?

  8. I live in the great Bay Area in California and have just gotten into shooting. I've been shooting for about 2 months and several different people at the different local ranges near me have given me ton's of compliments for how well I am shooting for a beginner and told me to look into Practical Shooting. I went to a Competition last weekend and BOY did I love it. I wanted to compete right then and there lol. I am currently trying to finish up my prerequisites to go into nursing school where I will get my B.S. and then go to med school. I love medicine and I love sports. Many surgeons that I have scrubbed in with, to only observe not participate lol, have told me that they go to the shooting range after a difficult case or long shift to help release stress and anxiety. They recommended I try getting into it because of the pressures of school and with my mom's fight with cancer where I'm her primary caretaker and i'm glad they have suggested it. I can't start officially until Sept 25th because my local range makes you take a safety/intro course before you can participate. Can't wait to get advice and meet other people. I have a sig mosquito and a Springfield xd9 5 inch barrel which i absolutely LOVE ;)
