  1. I just bell slightly to get the bullet on without damage, then remove the bell with a crimper.

This is the part I'm caught up on.. how do you bell a 223 case? Are you using a separate die (like the Lyman M series)? The trim die is going to remove any belling/expanding since it's a full length sizer, right? Or does the trim die not work the neck like regular sizing dies do?

You can get the Lee universal neck expander. Or if you have a lee/rcbs sizing die you can run the die up so that you are not sizing the brass again, but you drop the neck expander low enough to bell the case as desired.

The trim die sizes the neck too small, I had mine honed out a little to keep the neck sizing to a minimum

  2. I have several questions regarding the installation of the trimmer. Where does the motor jam nut go? How do I stop the unit from rotating on the trim die when I turn it on? Probably sound like stupid questions but I am mechanically-challenged when it comes to stuff like this!!!! Thanks in advance

The motor jam nut keeps the motor at the proper height. You move the motor up & down for trim length, once you get the correct trim tighten down the jam nut. The die moves up or down for the case re-sizing. If you get the nuts tight enough the motor will not rotate when turned on. Use two wrenches (one on the motor, the other on the die jam nut) That will get it nice tight.

Also a lot of people hold the motor when they first turn it on.

  3. I picked up a second 650 for a decent deal. It came with a case feeder but I'm thinking of selling it to help pay for the purchase. I was thinking of only using 1 case feed for 2 presses. I cant run 2 presses at the same time and changing out case feed plates takes seconds.

I picture a straight piece of tube with a double bend near the top. I would place the tube in the middle of both 650's and then just rotate the feeder to which ever press I'm going to run.

Anyone done this? or should I just keep the second feeder?

  4. I'll stick with the springs, thank you very much.

    Never had a problem.

Have had some issues when trying to use the rod.

Ive taken off that black metal arm that the rod goes into and made a flat piece of metal with a threaded hole for a screw to hold the primer advance spring in place. Just gives me some extra room when you need to reach into that area.

  5. OK I'm an idiot. But just exactly what is the purpose of greasing the underside of the Station 1 locator? Especially "heavily greasing" it?

My press (650XL) is fairly new, only loaded a few thousand rounds. But Dillon had that cavity absolutely packed! The station one locator doesn't move? What am I missing here?

I too would like to know. Anyone have an explanation? I can't for the life of me see the reason but I may be missing the obvious. Wouldn't be the first time....

    Doug.

I got this off another thread http://www.brianenos...howtopic=147054

The station one locator should be greased on the underside, as this helps to dampen vibration.
  6. I dont see the point of having a 550 next to the 650. I was going to do this but it didn't make sense to me have to have to buy 2 different kinds of tool heads, conversion kits, etc. especially when the machine are kind of similar, sell the 550 to buy a basic 650 so all the parts are common to both presses. Or sell and buy something else to enhance your reloading room - giraud trimmer or something.

I ended up getting a lee cast turret press that I find works great next to the 650. It handles prep and does a great job at smaller quantity's.

I regret selling my 550. I have a couple of calibers I would like to reload for but don't. I can't bring myself to fork over $200+ to load a caliber that I would only load a few hundred rounds a year.

Having a 550 that only does a couple of hundred a year rounds would be a wast of a great press.cheers.gif

But let me get this straight - you dont want to pay $200 for caliber changes but you would want to have a 400-600 dollars in a press you would only use for a couple hundred rounds a year? That doesent seem right to me......cool.gif

I have some calibers I would like to do on my 650 but realized its not worth the money for amount I'm using. I found the Lee turret is perfect for job. $100 press, caliber conversions are about $10

  8. as others have said the Lee classic cast press is good to go. IMHO its a great press to start out on, slow enough to learn everything but can be speed up for moderate amounts of ammo. I had one and then sold it, bought a few other presses and sold them, ended up with a 650 and its great, but I wanted something for small batches. I purchased a new Lee classic turret and put it next to the 650 its a great addition to my reloading room.

  9. I use one fired unprimed .38 special peice of brass instead of a coat hanger wire, a perfect fit.

That is a good idea too. I also like the idea of the allen wrench, I just picked up the allen wrench kit/mount because I got tired of all my wrenches laying on the bench. Lots of good ideas here - on my wire I hang it from the holes in the strong mount, so its always a easy reach, and doesnt clutter up the work bench.

The primer advance system is one thing that I think Dillon didnt do right, LnL & Loadmaster both cheaper presses dont advance primers until a case is present. I made that little piece of metal and it works well and takes seconds to put in and out. Its made out of shim stock, and the bend is so you can get it in there better with your fingers.

  10. Hi all,

I posted a few weeks ago when I got a new 650. You guys were really helpful, so I wanted to share a couple of things I found:

    1. I asked what could be done to stop the endless procession of primers into (and off of) the ski jump when first trying to set up and dial in all the dies on a toolhead. The LnL doesn't replace a new primer with yet another new primer until the first one is inserted into a case--and I was very accustomed to this feature. When trying to run just one case through all the 650 stations to set everything up, the five escaping primers were bugging me. I figured out how to stop that. All you need to do is remove the large black sloping plastic piece on the very front of the machine that causes the primer feed to advance. It functions a lot like the large cam block on the casefeed. One screw removes it quickly. Just remember to screw it back in when you want primers to start up again. :)

    2. Similarly, if you're trying to run just one case through all the stations, you don't really want cases to keep flowing from the case feeder. I noticed on one of the Ultimate Reloader videos that Gavin had a special metal clip that keeps the pivoting case bushing shelf from moving. I made one myself out of a piece of stiff wire coat hanger. It looks like a gigantic staple. One end fits into the case bushing itself, and the other end sits on the outside of the press to keep the unit from returning back under the tube to fetch a new case.

Hope this is helpful to someone out there....

He is what I use for these issues.

  11. I'm going to start loading for 44mag and I was looking at the 650 conversion kits. I have the 45LC kit and wanted to see what would work on the 44 mag. I was surprised to see they didnt use the same shell plate. When I put a 44mag into the 45lc shell plate its so close to the same.

Anyone ever try loading 44mag with 45lc shell plate? The time you buy shell plate, station 1 locator and funnel, you might as well just buy the whole kit.

I think Ill just load these on the lee turret press.
