  1. Jon, Great video. My girlfriend pointed out the music was really mellow.. -z
  2. The Brownells vice blocks work good. I believe most of the combo barrel nut wrenches have a square hole for a socket. You pretty much have to use a long torque wrench as a cheater. Here's pictures of building one: http://apollo.demigod.org/~zak/DigiCam/AR1...per-assembly-1/
  3. That's pretty much it. Get the gas tube holes lined up, gas ports lined up, check the headspace, and you're good to go. I think AR15.com has step-by-step instructions. -z
  4. FWIW, maybe 10% of my spent cases have primer shear at 5.1gr TG, 180gr MG, WSR, 1.230", from my SV. Stock firing pin. -z
  5. People will switch to Major when there is a scoring advantage to Major (this is determined by points and target types), and the equipment is such that it can be shot fast enough to be worthwhile compared to 5.56.
  6. Let's try a thought experiment. Clear the gun, and obtain a safe sight picture. Dry fire the gun. Now press the trigger. Press it again, and "double-tap" the trigger. Notice the gun doesn't move when you press the trigger. As long as you hold the same sight picture, the theoretical best shot-to-shot time for you is as fast as you can press the trigger in this setup. All the physics that happens when you're actually firing rounds downrange adds time. A lighter BCG helps to reduce the magnitude of the forces. A good muzzle comp is another part of the picture. Yup.
  7. Hey, that's how I drive!!
  8. A lot of us go the other direction and use lighter BCG's. -z
  9. From my previous range trip- as I'm driving up, the guy turns around and points his rifle straight at me. From my 2nd previous range trip- Two younger guys, one lacking in muzzle control. I call cease fire, go down range, set up targets. As I finish placing the chrono in front of my bench, I see one of the guys carrying his pistol around. "So are we hot or what?!" Oh, they also like to shoot from 5' behind the firing line. I came to shoot, not RO. -z
  10. No. One big advantage of the M93 over conventional telestocks is that the cheek weld is constant regardless of position. -z
  11. Yes. The Magpul M93 stock needs a carbine buffer and spring. It comes with its own special buffer tube. [ link to larger image ] -z
  12. chp5, Yes. I've gone to the Magpul M93A stock on just about all my ARs. -z
  13. Yes. As long as you use the carbine buffer, spring, and receiver extension (aka buffer tube) for a carbine stock, and the rifle-length buffer, spring, and rifle receiver extension for a rifle stock, it will work fine. You get into trouble when you do something like use a carbine buffer in a rifle tube. The gas key will smash into the receiver. -z
  14. hopalong, If we're talking Major as in USPSA, then we already have specialized equipment left and right. No John Q Shooter (not into IPSC) is likely to have a 38Super/9x23 double-stack, or to load 40SW to 1.200" ? I've been shooting 6.8SPC since March, and I have 15 and 25 round mags. My shipment of 2000 unfired cases will arrive tomorrow, after long delay. I can't make Major with the powders out there now, but I hope that will change soon. Kurt, Until we have "Can hunt Elk and Lion with it" in the USPSA rule book, I guess we'll have to use 320PF. I wouldn't use a 110gr 308 for either of those either. AH6IP, There has allegedly been some powder development in the last year to produce something better for the SPC. I heard from someone working with a "NDA" powder (ie, they couldn't disclose the specific details) that the 115gr @ 2815 was doable from an 18" bbl. In any case, it'd probably be easier to make Major with the Grendel.
  15. Whatever you shoot/bring, make sure it is dust & sand tolerant. -z
  16. Why is everyone assuming Major == 308? You ought to be able to make Major rifle in an AR15 platform with 6.5 Grendel or 6.8SPC (soon?). -z
  17. Wasn't the #2 pair - the guys from CA - LE? Lt Col Brewer and partner were #7. There was a USMC team and a Army team in the top 10, I think. -z

  20. http://www.demigod.org/~zak/firearms/precision/ More details here: http://www.demigod.org/~zak/firearms/precision/ This monthly match is an excellent opportunity to test your precision/sniper rig, or prepare for the ITRC.
  21. No, but the time you spend on the O-course is part of the 45 minutes for Stage 1.
  22. Shot my dirty CTR this afternoon. It was printing 2.5-3" left and 0.8" high. That explains why I needed so much windage to make hits Sunday on Hoblit. I was shooting groups in the 1.4 MOA range. When I first got this gun, I was shooting half inch at 200 yards. Best I've done with the ACOG is around 1. -z
  23. The view through the optic is occluded, so there is no magnification. Same as using an Aimpoint with the front lens cap on. -z
  24. Dragon, My JP rifle ran near-perfectly. After it got full of sand/dust the first day, the LW carrier wouldn't reliably strip the first round the from the mag. I switched to the SS carrier before the hoser stage and it ran 100% from then on. Eric's rifle had some serious problems with the heat allowing the gas block to move. I doused my gas block and barrel with water from my camelback four times in that 560 rounds in 23 minutes to help prevent that from happening. Bret, Maybe someone who shot it last year can tell you which courses of fire were removed. I think the Arvada and Hoblit Ranch courses were new. -z
