  1. Factory S&W is .0006, any closer and bullet fowling will build up and stall your cylinder rotation.

We always used Federal Small Primers... if this doesn't  help work on your firing pin, dont shim the cylinder.

In the 80s we use to trim the cylinder short 1/2"+ and re-thread the barrel to .0004 to shoot more accurate PPC loads with 148 gr HBWC under 2.8 gr of Bullseye.

While we thought this was better, our scores never improved....

  2. I shoot my 625s locally with other revo shooters for good practice but at Matches where there are other 8 shot revo shooters, I bring out my 627 to be competitive.

I started USPSA in 1988 with a S&W model 14 38 Special 6 shot that I shot PPC with. I was almost always the only revo unless we were shooting Steel Challenge type matches.

At 66 I shoot for fun. If it is not fun anymore I have other hobbies that are fun!

  3. I can shoot an entire 15 stage match without having to swab out my cylinder even once. The use of good burning powder & clean jacketed bullets is the key.

Since 1996 I have used 38 Colt Short Starline brass, 4.6 gr Universal Clay's, 130 gr Montana Gold RN .356 bullets, Federal small primers, at 1.100" OAL for 1045 fps in my 5" 627 bbl or 136 PF

Accuracy is excellent, knocking down steel great, and a clean gun is awesome. Try it and you will see.

  4. I could run 1000 rnds through my gun before even scrubbing the cyl with a cotton brush!

130 gr Montana Gold .356 RN with 4.6 gr of Universal Clay's at 1.100" oal and a Federal Small Primer.

This is my exact same load since 1997 with my 627s that both shoot well with a ton of miles on them.

  5. I started IPSC in 1987 and stages were 6 ends per box Max maybe 12 ends & 3 stages.

Then with the 10 rnd 38 Super 4 targets Nd 2 steel started showing up on every stage, again a match would be just 3 stages.

Then it became arevolver Neutral stages which meant 6 ends before a reload but as soon as the Glock 17 appeared holding 18 ends. Stages were getting 24+ ends with mixed paper & steel.

3 stages became 5 stages at club matches but Area Championships would be 10-12 stages and Nats were 15+.

I shot revolver since 1975 and still shoot revolver because it is fun. At 66 I know I am on the downhill side of shooting but my brakes are slowing me down as well as age.

BTW, I also shoot Open with myCaspian 38 Super & 29 rnd mags then 3 Gun with a Benelli long tube SG holding 18, and an AR 15 with big mags. Never was I dumb or stubborn enough to shoot my revolvers when high capacity is the norm.

Shoot for fun! If you think you are going to kick the big dogs butt at a Championship you will find the only butt that will be kicked is your own!

Money. I would love to shoot revolver. I would love to do it even more if there were modern break top guns, mainly because I think they are cool. But sadly buying the stuff is not practical right now. I dig weapons manipulation, so the reloading complaint wouldn't bother me.

If I ever acquire something, I'll probably keep it to IDPA though. USPSA for racing, IDPA for messing around with other guns.

Don't forget the real Revolver Matches are ICORE with their yearly big matches in San Luis Obispo, CA at the Hogue range.

  7. Having shot revolvers since 1976 in both PPC and USPSA matches I bought 2 629s. In 1998 & 99 I won USPSA Nationals with my 627 shooting 38 Colt Shorts in a very limited field excluding the King, Jerry....

I had extensive work done on both to shoot 9MM for USPSA, ICORE, & Steel Challenge. Needless to say my well shot 627 with 38 Colt Shorts felt better and shot better groups with more than 20 yrs of use and 120K down the shorter 5" bbl.

I sold them both to a revolver shooting buddy who was starting out in revolver shooting for ICORE & SC who has since quit shooting revo and sold them.

  8. If you want really a clean burning powder so you wont have to scrub your cylinder even once in a 15 stage match use 38 Starline Colt Short brass, Federal small pistol primer and 4.6 gr of Universal Clays under a 356 Montana Gold 130 gr RN bullet at 1.100" OAL. This is accurate to 50 yds, makes minor @ 132PF and leaves no powder residue in cylinder whatsoever! I even shoot 50 yd PPC still with my 5" 627 and have 120K+ downrange and its a shooter!

  9. I have the Hogue Rubber Mono-grip on all my 625s and 627s so that they feel the same. I do like the finger grooves as my hand has been use to this grip since they came out in the early 1990s

  10. 9 Major reloads

I shoot on the Montana Gold Team & I have used Montana Gold 124 gr RN with HS-6 for my 9 Major and noticed a less snappy load over the 115s.

    8.0 gr HS-6, 1.165" oal, CCI primer, any 9MM brass is 1375 fps in a 5-1/2" .355 bbl with a 4 port comp & groups great!
