  1. I bought 100s of Full Moon Clips from Steve Crawford at Ranch Products in the 80s when they were $25/100. I have no idea why these Moon Clips have got so expensive.

When the 1st 8 shot revolver was mfg by Taurus in 1994, Mike Gurule would machine the cylinder and Pan Pacific in California EDM'd the Full Moon Clips for the 608 at close to the same prices as Ranch Products.

After I bought my S&W 627 it came with 3 8 rnd Clips but I got Mike Kelley from the Performance Center to send me 100 as I had bought 3 of their 1st production guns made for Lew Horton.

Not sure if these older Ranch Products 6 rnd 625 clips will work with your guns but if you need to try one send me your address.

  2. I use CCI 40gr HPs and gun barrel stays clean enough to shoot 200 rnds before the leading occurs.

I also opened my cylinder gap from .0006" to .0010" that really helped on smooth running of the cylinder at my 14 lb trigger pull

  3. Should have between 6 & 10 thousandths between barrel & cylinder. It is highly unlikely your cylinder is not flush...

The barrel forcing cone is soft enough to run a good file over to open the spacing within parameters of the mfg to achieve a better fit.

  4. Why not send it back to S&W? It sounds more serious than a spring or full moon clip.

Mine has 120K+ rounds and the 'play' it has in it contributes to faster reloads and a better trigger than my other 627

  5. Try a different bullet or load. Revolvers are notoriously accurate with a good bullet & load.

(my 627 I shoot 130 gr RN .356 Montana Gold (1030 fps) with 4.6 gr Univ Clay's, Fed Primer, at 1.100" oal and can get tight groups at 25 yds)

  6. If you load your cartridges lighter, it accomplishes exactly what Porting does on any revolver...except bigger high pressure calibers (454 Casull)

I own one 627 stock and one with a Shilen barrel and integral compensator.

Porting just releases gas after the bullet passes whereas a compensators baffle actually deflect gasses.

Pix too big to download, DM me for pix

  7. Since 1997 I have shot 38 Colt Short with 130 gr Montana Gold RN with 4.6 gr of Universal Clay's at 1.100" at 1050 fps (136 PF) I can shoot 1000 rnds before even swabbing the cylinder of my 627 5" bbl.

I bought a new 929 when they 1st came out and returned it to S&W to fix both the timing arm and to clean up the chatter marks in the Ti cylinder. Still bad so I sold it & bought a latter version used with lots of smithing work but still had troubles and sold it...

The extra 1.5" of barrel length over my 627 5" never was worth all the hassels and down time.

My Starline 38 Colt Short has been reloaded 20+ times and never difficult in the reloads even though it is a straight walled case. Ask others but the 627 is not problematic as the 629 is.

Reliability is the name of the game and my 627 has 100,000 rnds without ever going back to S&W and still shoots a small group...

  8. My 627 S&W 8 shot revolver is able to make Major with both .357 and 38 Super

(and 38 Super in the Brownell's 8 rnd full moon clips)

As stated above you score minor so there is no advantage. Also both are harder to extract fired cases from....

(Since 1997 I have shot 38 Colt Shorts with 130 gr Montana Gold .356 RN bullet at 134 PF)

  9. I have shot my 627 8 shot 357 in 38 Super at Nationals when USPSA recognized these and scored them Major with 165 PF (Chrono)

My reloads worked best with Starline brass, 130 gr Montana Gold 130 gr RN .356 and Moonclips made FOR 38 Super from Brownell's and I used a -.0002 EGW sizing dies. New Starline Brass also worked but reloads need the undersized die to work smoothly.

  10. My older PPC guns (1970s S&W model 10, 14, 27, and 65) are all worked on smoothed out but factory springs had a very reliable trigger pulls with the firing pin on hammers was #8 lbs using Federal primers.

My new 627s and 629s with the factory firing pins & springs were set at #14 lbs+ from S&W.  I bought the +.00015 longer firing pin from Brownells that allows them to shoot them closer to #6 lbs but for reliability and feel, I have them set closer to #8 lbs.

I will guarantee you that every #4-6 lb trigger pull gun will turn into a "Click n Boomer"

  11. Use to shoot PPC in the late 1970s with Bill Davis Model 10s with 6" bull bbls then broke down and

bought a Powers Grandmaster from my shooting partner and loved the feel of the  Model 65 SS frame

with the Bomar Front & Rear adjustable sights.

I shot several 600/600 scores when 24 rnds were shot at 50 Yds...(Shot PPC as a Distinguished Master

with a 590 avg over 12 years 1976-1988 with the Spokane Police Dept)

  12. I have shot revolver in competition since 1976. Loved Steel Challenge with 5 targets and 6 shots.

Now with my 8 shot, I love USPSA & SC both. Shot some ICORe had fun lots of good guys but the 10 hour round trip wasn't  fun.

At 66, I am just happy to still be shooting!
