Have owned 627s and 929s, kept the 627s and couldnt get either of my 929s to run nearly as good as their older better built non MIM parts brothers.
Hmmm...tapered 9mm case in a straight walled cylinder....IMHO I see nothing but long term trouble in this scenario.
However, in 1996 when I bought my first 3 early 627s through Lew Horton, I got lotsa crap about shooting 38 Colt Shorts (north of 120K+ without having to replace anything yet)
I have also shot 38 Super in my 627s with great accuracy & success but they too are a straight walled case.
Please keep me up to date on your success or failures!

My 627 38/357 shoots 38 Super undersized an EGW die just fine but will not load the 9mm tapered cases in the same cylinder.
-
In my 627 I shoot Starline Brass 38 Colt Shorts and Montana Gold 130 gr RN with 4.6 gr Universal Clay's at 1.100" Federal primers at 1050 fps.
I tried heavier bullets, 147 & 160 gr but found the lighter bullet had less recoil and muzzle flip. Also the accuracy with the lighter bullets was a bit better.

Try the SDM Green Fiber optic sight at Brownell's ( I have it on my 627s & 625s)
-
Brownell's has 38 Super Moon clips for the 8 shot 627 38/357 that fit 38 super (084-000-090)
No reason to shoot major as the 8 shot in USPSA only scores minor.
DM for pix

Assumimg these are for a 38/357 the moon clip inside ID where the shells is .800, then it is 627 S&W. If .830 then Taurus 608
The S&W fit in the 608 and shoot fine but the S&W will NOT fit the Taurus 608.

No sense making major as all 8 shot revolvers are scored minor in USPSA

I use the same grip with my Revolver as my Semi-Autos, both thumbs forward...

Watched a Jerry Video,, He was using his left thumb to eject and loading with right,,, His vertical arc was alot less than I am seeing in vids from the right hand palm strike method.
The other vids I am seeing muzzle come back towards the for head slighle past 90 degrees to the ground,,
Like in this video,,, basically every reload breaks 180, and sweeps hand ? So is noone at matches doing this ? And would said guy get DQ'd ?
I mean its a pretty common reload. Not IDPA, ICORE, nor USPSA are the revolver shooters breaking the 180 nor muzzle rising above the berm nor sweeping their hand in front of the barrel.
The RULES will DQ every shooter that does this and to say that this video is showing it happening ALL the time is not at any of the above matches...
The guy in this video would EARN a DQ with unsafe gun handling at any of these Matches.
-
DQ applies to any gun that is not handled safely...revolvers, semi-autos, shotguns, or rifles.
I have shot revolvers since we 1984 and never earned a DQ. I used the old style for Police Pistol Combat (Jerry Miculek style) and now weak hand reloads as the barrel either way is never above the berm nor breaking the 180...
No one is ever 'given' a DQ, they earned it by breaking the safely rules...

All my training practices sessions are about improving my speed while keeping my accuracy. You should know that bigger matches will have distance, limited open targets, as well may have strong hand & weak hand standards.
Just get use to your gun and keep your practice about improving speed and keeping your accuracy. This takes many hours of shooting so make it fun above all!
-
With enough practise,, you will get the perfect draw 98% of the time. The other 2% you can adjust before the 1st shot.
GM Jim Wall of Milt Sparks would practice his draw from his carry holster, a 1911 300 times a day. Jim has the smoothest and fastest on target draw if anyone I know.

Hard to beat the Hogue rubberized grips. I have tried Herrett's, Packmayer, Hogue wood Big Butt, and JM grips but none have ever felt better or performed better in rain or shine than the Hogue.

Loading the same 2000 cases I got in 1996. Very few have split over the years and I just toss them.
-
I run only Hogue rubber grips on all my S&Ws, same grab & feel on every revolver!

I have never had any issues with my 627s 38/357 but David is stating specifically the 929s 9MM which have many MIM parts that the early 627s didn't have.

Guys:
I bought some Speed Beez eight shot speed loaders for my 27's and my experience is they are easier to release than any other speed loader. So easy that if I touch the release rod, no matter how lightly, I feel eight rounds dropping on my boots and on the ground. Not uncommon for me to load them and when I grab one, I find a round has fallen out. I personally don't trust them. They are convenient for Steel Challenge though. Also they take .38 SC and no other speed loader made for .38 does that I have found.
Will admit that the spring loaded ones like Bianchi (?) are pretty cool though. Dependable too. Just stick up real high and they don't make them for eight shot revolvers.
Got some Five Star, eight round, speed loaders too. Conventional push in and turn. Really good though. Holds the ammo firmly and easy to grab and release. I would trust them in competition or with my life.'
Still, to me, best bet remains Moon Clips. Easier to manipulate and faster to use. Not as cool though.

This is absolutely true!

The 38 Colt Short is the cats meow for sure!

I have used the BladeTec revo holster and their full moon clip holders since 1997. I also use the CR Speed velcro underbelt system.
There are many options for gear including Safariland gear.
DM me if you want pix, I cannot get my phone to download pix here...

Nothing will ever be faster on revolver reloading other than the S&W 625 with Full Moon Clips in 45 acp.
However the Safariland 'Jet' speedloader thumb activator for 38/357 is a bit faster than the HKS reloader that turns to insert.
Not sure that many people shoot a 44 Mag /Special just because of ammo costs...

I bought 3 627s from the 1st production run of S&W through Lew Horton Dist. These were also from S&Ws Performance Center but had pretty thoroughly fit parts, timing hands, and action trigger jobs.
Not sure on new markings on guns like the 8 x 357 on either side of barrels but they were all 5" barrels and came with S&W full moonclips.
The newer 8 shot revolvers have many more internal MIM parts than the early ones (before they added the lock & key to all of them)
The two 929s I bought had the 6" bbl & trigger locks thinking these new breakout Performance Center guns would be like the early 627s. I had to do a ton of work on mine and neither came close to my 1997 627s.
Others will tell you that the 1st production runs of the 5" bbl 627 8 shot were awesome compared to the 6" bbl 8 shot 9MMs
BTW, my 627s will shoot the following calibers with very good groups in the 5" bbl.
38/357
38 Colt Short
38 Super (different moon clips)
Oversized factory S&W cylinder latch?
