Simply the best. He (and Phil Rosato) adopted me in 2001, and, eventually, many Washington state shooters who came to the IRC.
He was the most fun to shoot with.

Try the Pachmayr Gripper grips. I have average hands with a deep palm and these mitigate recoil for me though many find them aesthetically not pleasing. I have never liked the Hogue mono grips for the reason you state. That said, Hogue as a company is excellent to work with

Beautiful piece. I have often said that if I were to ever totally master the double action revolver pull it will be because of my 617. If I wear mine out before I do (or die) it would be replaced with one like this

It is a trigger stop. Not needed

Check the trigger pin in the frame and make sure it is not loose. That is a back to the factory fix

My story and I am sticking to it is that I once got a beautiful trigger job from Randy Lee. 5 and one half pounds/Federal primers carefully loaded. The problem for me was the weak return. I was informed that that is the price of a super light trigger. That the faster shooters released the trigger rather than riding the return. I could never get the hang of that so the trigger job was lost on me. My problem.
The balance between a light pull and the return is a matter for experiment and will be slightly different for every gun.

Unfortunately, everybody's hand and pain tolerance is different. Resign yourself to trying and owning ($) a lot of different grips. I used Hogue fingergrooveless big butts but changed every so often. Recently I returned to Pachmayr (sp?) grippers. Go figure

Everything is a compromise. If your gun groups short colt and you are good with the pressure of your load, go for it and reap the slight benefit over long colt. If you are not so fortunate with your gun, or, would like a little cushion on the pressure, do what many did in the early years of ICORE 8 shot and go with long colt.
My hand/reloading speed did not notice the difference between long and short colt. I just pocketed the easier ejection with long colt and called it good

38 special cases, loaded to 875 feet easily shoot half the group size with the same load; they also have much less perceived recoil, to my hands. Perhaps its the much lower pressure? Regardless, I ran a reload test this weekend, 10 runs. I do not have a shot timer, so my wife used a stopwatch. From her mark, I'd empty, load and close the cylinder. No firing as she does not enjoy the noise. Average time, hand timed for the above with the SC was 1.38. average time for the special was 1.70. Plus I bobbled a special reload and threw out the +2 second attempt. No bobbles with the SC.
that's almost a full second slower over a 32 round course.
My last 929, after polishing the cylinder, adding the apex extended pin would not get sticky with the Bayou 160s, but would simply lock up at random with any pf that would stay above 125. I had to withdraw from the revolver nats because I was not certain I could pass chrono; I was certain it would simply tie up during a course of fire. I sold it, with full disclosure and the buyer seemed confident he could get it to work. He did, but the ball detent had not been installed. This I did not notice. The first one was better, but when the well and septic both crashed, 1 day apart, we parted ways as I needed cash, fast. Both 929's were exceptionally accurate and my shot calls via the front sight were never wrong
I'd love to get one for next year, but I'm really leery of the lack of QC. A $1000 dollar 175 year old technology should be fairly simple for one of the Americas oldest gun makers to produce: fact is , they are struggling to make a decent revolver. How do I keep from getting another albatross, or should I just stick with the 627?

It won't add many shooters. It is the same fallacious reasoning that brought about allowing 8 shots. Not that many are going to go out and spend the money to buy the equipment to shoot the division. If they already have the gun, they probably will shoot the division/but they are probably already shooting revolver
Better to divide revolver into 8 and six. You may get some people back (625s who didn't/couldn't sell them) and pick up some casual revolver shooters

A lot of folks have been using .38 long colts cheerfully for a couple of decades. Gives you a little on .38 special on ejection and a little room in the case re margin of error on reloading/pressure

Optics are generally faster for most. It will effectively obsolete non optics just as the 8 shot obsoleted the 6 shot revolver.
