  1. Alfaro is no longer in the gun business.  I'm not sure where you'd be able to get one, the last time I tried, SVI was selling them, but for BIG bucks.

You can buy 2 grips, one to practice on and one for real and do the stippling yourself for the price of these....

  2. BigD,

Humbling experience isn't it??  I hate to be the one to tell you this, but this is just the first day of many :-)

IPSC shooting is an amazing journey of self discovery and your own skills and abilities - including the ability to totally mess it all up!

You'll notice in other threads, the question - How to stop Brain Fade and How to hold it all together during a big match...

Here's hoping you have more good days than bad!!!!

  3. Hey y'all,

I shot my first GSSF match yesterday and did NOT make a complete fool out of myself :-)

I'm an Open gun shooter so I was really surprised that I was able to handle the gun and get my hits, not only with an iron sighted gun, but with a "regular" trigger and a gun that I had to borrow and hadn't fired before.

Considering all that, I've decided that I am a REAL shooter now :-)

  4. Hi Chris,

I zeroed my dot at 10 yds, cause that's the distace we shoot at the most!  The trick is, make sure you KNOW where it's going at longer distances.  (Mine is always the same, no matter the distance!)

  5. why would a guy/gal want to risk fumbling a reload by looking at the target face instead of the pistol?

Let me ask you a few questions in return :-)

When you draw do you look at the gun or the target?  Most of us look at the target cause that's where we want the gun to go... right?

So why wouldn't you do the same thing on the reload?  I may be wrong here (I'm picturing Robbie's picture on the recent front sight)!

Also, I frequently get coached that the gun needs to be closer to my body when I reload, so that the final movements are the same as the draw.

Geez, I hope that all made sense!

  6. from Nik ---- shot a match this morning and had such a good time ---- five stages and I didn't have one brainfart!  <much snipped? How long have you been doing this? Any insight into what allowed you to pull this off?

    Nik,

You already have an accomplishment!  2 stages with all A's and no brainfarts is a HUGE accomplishment!  It's taken me 4 years to get to that point!  (I have NO natural shooting abilities!)

Insight - y'all here are the only reason I've done well the past month!  I've been shooting a long time, and just never got it, until I found the plain english translations of IPSC shooting :-)

  7. First off, I think it is way cool to see so many forum member's names ( and pictures) appear in one way or another in Front Sight magazine.

My name's been listed in that magazine for the last year - has anybody seen it?

Not a facetious question, I'm really curious just how much you guys pay attention :-)

Oh - and my name is Kathy Littman, don't think that shows anywhere here!

  8. My apologies if you end up with this twice.  I posted it last night, but haven't seen it "surface" yet.

    Brian,

I'd like to see a new forum where we can post our accomplishments.

John changed his sig line to let us know how well he did on the steel... a couple of months ago Phil won his Nationals and it's buried in the middle of another topic.  I just won my first match...

Obviously some of us need of a pat on the back occasionally, and I think the positive reinforcement would really help those that focus on what went wrong rather than good stuff.

So think about it please :-)

    Thanks!

  9. Perfect timing on this one guys - we got to shoot it today!!

I did it in 15.36 (sloooowwww) but was only down 2 points.  Hf was 5.7217

I thought about the "point" shoot comment, but decided that aiming was better :-)

  10. I have 3 must read authors - have everything they've written (in order...)

    John Steinbeck

    Robert Heinlein

    Johanna Lindsey

Actual favorite books not written by the above 3 -

The Goal, Iliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox

    Webster's Dictionary

    The Bible

I'm actually an AVID reader - i'll read anything :-)

Kath, it's amazing that you can't mention guns at work!  What ever happened to freedom?

It's an unusual situation for certain.  They don't specifically disallow talk about guns, but they do make it very clear that they are anti-gun, anti-violence and they've requested that co-workers report anything (anybody) suspicious or threatening.

So it's my CHOICE not to talk about it, because frankly, I need their money to shoot :-)

  12. FWIW - No, the 4 extra A's weren't legal.  You should have been assessed extra shot (and possibly extra hit) penalties.

Well I fired off an email to Mr. Amidon and here's his reponse....

    *********************************************

Rule US 9.4.4 states In a Virginia Count or Fixed Time course of fire.

US 9.4.4.1 States  extra shots ( more than the number specified) shall constitute a procedural penalty for each extra shot, etc.

Based on this, even though VC and time fire are different in the time allowed, the scoring and penalties are the same, except in VC misses count and in time fire they don't.

    John

    Drats :-)

  13. Um, Kyle...

I hate to tell you this, but there's only one way to open the door - turn the knob and pull or push :-)))))

Actually, I watched a super squad navigate a door at West Coast last year and most of them turned their bodies out of the way putting the gun closer to their hand on the knob - however, that was to move through, not shoot right away.....

The one thing to remember (honestly!) is to turn the knob, preferably as part of make ready if the RO will let you!!!!

  14. I hated that course!  However, I was able to get off 10 shots weak hand which added 4 extra A's for my score.  I'm not sure whether that was "legal" or not, but I received no penalties for it.

For those of you shooting this that aren't Masters - most of the B and C class shooters did not get any shots off from the 2nd position after the reload (myself included!)  I was able to get off all the shots on the other strings, but did not hit the target at 40 yds (heck I can't even see that far!)

Erik - thanks for quoting me - makes me feel like I might actually know something - LOL!
