  1. Pretty much if you have the money you have two options.

    75 Shadow

    SP-01 Shadow

Pretty much comes down to one question: Do you want to shoot IDPA too?

Yes some IDPA: get the 75 Shadow, it will make weight easily.

USPSA only: Get the SP-01 Shadow, it will be the flattest shooting 9mm you ever own. Just make sure you practice transitions to get a feel for the weight.

Some people really don't like the weight, though - even if you are going to use it exclusively for USPSA, if you are one who prefers to drive lighter guns, then you may prefer the lighter frame of the 75 Shadow.

Can't say I understand it, but those crazy folks are out there.

Funny you should say that. I have been shooting a plastic framed gun in Production for years now, and thought I'd try out a Shadow to see what all the hype was about. I hated it. It felt so heavy and bulky, I couldn't wait to get back to plastic. But I'm sure had I shot it for a few months, I'd probably feel differently.

  2. If you were going to design a new range for your local club, how many bays would you want, and how big would they be?

A private company I work for does instruction for personal protection / CCW / home defense etc., and also makes holsters and sells self defense related accesories. Currently we rent a range (and classroom) once a month to run our classes, which has worked well up to this point. For the last year or so, we have been kicking around the idea of getting our own facility to train on. Recently, the place we have been renting informed us that they will be doubling the rental fee (to the sum of some $400 per day), which will severely cut into our profit. As such, we began really looking for a new place. We went out an looked at a piece of land last week, and plan on making an offer.

Here is where you all come in. The company owner wants not only the ablility to do what we are already doing (CCW training), but would like to draw competitive shooting sports as well (USPSA, IDPA, SSCA Cowboy and 3-gun). He has left it up to me to come up with a range lay-out that would be acceptable for all the sports. The actual construction will be done by an engineer already familiar with Florida's "Best Range Practices," he just wants me to tell the engineer what we want.

So if you had a chunk of land, what would your bays be? I doubt we will ever host anything more than local monthy matches, but I'd like to have at least 8 bays so as to not limit us. Not counting the dedicated "square range" bays that we would use for CCW training, I was thinking the following: four 35 x 35 yard bays, two 85 x by 35 yard bays, one 100 by 35 yard bay and hopefully one 300 by 50 yard bay. I figure that should allow us to run everything, including a decent 3-gun match.

I can picture depth, or bay length, but I'm having a hard time coming up with good bay width measurements. How wide do you think the average bay is that we normally set up a stage in--say a good field course? How wide do you think thay should be?

Again, the engineer is going to come up with the actual construction and placement of the bays, but I have been tasked with telling him what we think we need (or want), so I'm open to suggestions. If you were going to design a new range for your local club, how many bays would you want, and how big would they be?

  3. I'm confused--I thought Kim (or someone else at USPSA) already put out an e-mail saying the Nationals would be in Frostproof in 2013 (along with the WS).

I didn't see the email but maybe it was referring to the USPSA IPSC Nationals.

Franks said they would be held the week after the World Shoot.

Ahh. You are probably right--I must have misread it.

  4. I looked around a little and didn't see that this question had been posed already, so I figured I'd throw this out. I have been shooting the FL Open (and now A6) at Frostproof now for over 10 years. It's a great range, and Frank has made some incredible improvements over the last couple of years. That being said, I've read in Front Sight all the World Shoot coverage, seen the pictures of all the 'pomp and circumstance' that seems to go along with foreign matches (especially the WS) and I wonder if Frostproof will be an acceptable location--not the range, the area. Will shooters who have been to other World Shoots be disappointed in the area--hotels and food being so far away, reasonably sketchy host town, etc. I have never been to a WS, so I can't comment, but if any of you have, do you think we can pull it off?

  5. I'm confused--I thought Kim (or someone else at USPSA) already put out an e-mail saying the Nationals would be in Frostproof in 2013 (along with the WS). Maybe I read it wrong. Anyway, as someone who only lives 4 hours from Frostproof, I say--Keep the Nationals in Vegas! Frostproof is a nice range, but that's it. Lousy hotel /food /things-to-do selection, Orlando is an hour away with traffic, even the McDonalds doesn't open up until like 7:30 on Sunday morning. In the grand scheme of things, if you can't easily drive there within a day, Vegas is probably going to be cheaper than any other venue in the US. But I'll go shoot it wherever it ends up.

  6. I have been thinking about picking a couple of these up to try them out, but I have a buddy who tells me that some 3-gun matches are not allowing their use any longer, as they tend to tear up barricades. I'd like to try them, but I don't want to spend the money on them if they will not be allowed. Have you all shot matches recently where they have been disallowed? I've looked through some on-line match 'rules' but they are somewhat vague. Are the K9s considered a 'support device?'

    Thanks.

  7. I'm not worried about asthetics, so I'm using a crush washer to install my comp. But in looking inside the comp from the rear, it looks almost like it is designed to butt up against the muzzle when screwd all the way on. Using the crush washer, there would appear to be a (small) gap of threaded area of comp between the end of the barrel, and the beginning of the solid portion of the comp. Is this OK? It seems like there might be some erosion issues.

    Thanks

  8. Let me start by saying they know waaaaay more than I do about rifle barrels, and I don't question that they are right, but the contours of their barrels seems a little odd to me. Most of the supermatch .223 barrels are .650 under the handguard, and then .875 forward of the gas block. Is there some advantage to this? It seems as though a more middle of the road diameter, say .700 for the full length, would allow for the same weight, but a stronger barrel (or less likely to wander when hot) if there was one diameter for the whole length. Also, it seems like if you're going to have it thin anywhere, you'd want it towards the muzzle, to make transitions faster, and you'd want it heavier back towards the chamber. Does a thin barrel at the muzzle increase barrel 'whip?'

Again, I'm sure they are right, but someone tell me why.

ETA As long as we are talking about it, what do ya'all think the ideal contour (diameter) would be for a ~17" barrel used for 3-gun?

  9. Razz,

You forgot to tell us the story about how the hammer, hammer spring, and spring cap flew across the room once you got that carrier pin out. (Or am I the only idiot that did that the first time????)

    :roflol:

Oh, I'm not as dumb as my wife thinks I am...I took 'before' pictures, and disassembled it inside of a big zip-loc bag, just in case. No problems.

But just in case, I had a browser open to the Brownells site, so I could order any replacement parts I couldn't find on the floor.

  10. I searched around a bit and have not found anything. Can anyone point me to some directions for disassembling the M2 trigger group--specifically removing the lifter? I have the trigger group out, and I could just start pushing out pins and see what happens, but I was hoping there were some directions somewhere, so I don't screw anything up.

    Thanks

  11. I seem to recall a Front Sight article from last year where the stats crew ran Daniel's numbers at the Nationals, and determined that his score would have been less than 2% lower had he shot minor, as opposed to major, and the overall results would not have changed at all.

I have no opinion, I'm just sayin...

  12. Sonicpepsi:

The welded part is at the front end of the lifter--the area they are talking about that is notched, or looks like a spoon-shape was cut out of the metal. That part is filled in (welded), and smoothed out, so the 'pitchfork' looking area is no longer there.

Just out of curiosity, I have heard of (a very few) people having problems / malfunctions with their welded lifters, as the scallop or pitchfork cut out is designed to stabilize and straighten the shell as it is lifted in front of the bolt, and since it is no longer there, the shell can move a bit and not line up correctly going into the barrel. Is that the reason for that kind of malfunction?

  13. I spoke to Derek. He said STI doesn't have a true 9mm breech face, and most likely it's built on a .38 super slide. He said to be sure, however, you can measure your breech face. I also spoke to Bob at Brazos, who said the same thing, however, he said that older STIs may have a true 9mm breech face. He said to verify, you can look at the under side of the slide (stripper, I'm guessing) and it would be stamped '9.'

  14. I'm ordering an Aftec for my Trojan 9mm, and I'm trying to figure out which model to get. I was hoping someone here could tell me if the Trojan uses a 9mm breech face or a .38 super breech face?

    Thanks

Order the 9MM AFTEC. It is based on the cartridge not the breach face.

Here is the note when ordering the Aftec, which is why I was asking:

NOTE on 9mm: If your slide has a true, 9mm breech face (like the SVI interchangable, some Caspians and Nowlins, order extractor #466-001-038. If your 9mm is built on a .38 Super Slide (most are) order extractor #466-001-009.
