  1. It's an HK MR556, so 'getting one in the diameter I want' isn't an option. They only make one size, and no one else makes a barrel for it. It comes from the factory as a 9+ lb carbine-size AR, which is a little obese. Sure, I could do a few more pushups, but I think I can get away with taking a considerable amount of weight out of the barrel without compromising accuracy. We'll see what Adco says.

  2. Let's say you have a 16.5" middy laying around, and you want to do some 3-gun. The barrel is a very heavy 1 inch from chamber to gas port, and .720 to the muzzle. I want to get it turned down to take some of the weight out of it. What diameter would you recommend getting it turned down to? I'm planning on .700 for the full length, unless you guys can convince me otherwise.

    Thanks.

  3. OK, so I've been trying to read the rules of a number of different 3-gun matches, both outlaw and USPSA, and I'm still a little confused. In Tac Optics, in what situation would you be allowed to have more than 8+1, or when would you be able to top off to a capacity greater than 8 in the tube (after the start, of course)? Is it match-dependant?

ETA As long as I'm asking shotgun questions, how many of you have a sling on your shotgun (or rifle), or at least have the ability to put one on during a match? Is it commonly used?

  4. Just an update for those looking for more options. I got them to make a rear sight with a .130 wide notch, which will make the .115 front a little more useable. And for anyone running a USP Expert, they are now making a .180 tall, x .110 wide fiber optic front sight.

  5. That's an interesting picture. Are the carriers interchangeable between the M1 and M2?

And dang it--someone just tell me if I want a 21" or 24"! I'm at the point now of just flipping a coin. I've been waffling back and forth, and can't decide.

I believe the carriers are interchangeable. Get the 21" it's lighter and feels lighter out at the barrel which makes it swing faster.

    That's all I needed. Thanks!

  6. I shot with a guy at the Nationals who used a couple of 2011 mags in his USP .40. He said they worked about 99%, but he seemed pretty happy with them. Bruce Gray is the guy who does the mod. I don't know how much he charges.

  7. Mo, I think I saw you at some point during the match (or I remember seeing your nametag). Jason and I both shot an Expert in L10. Neither one of us had much time behind the new gun (like 4 days for me), so going to the Nationals with it may not have been a super good idea, but I started grooving into the gun by the end of the match. Jason stuck with the Expert in the Production match (sans magwell), and K.C. and I shot P30Ls. We all finished within a few percentage points of each other. I think we are getting the gun figured out, and I believe it will be competitive. By the way, Jason took HOA L10 at the GA State Match with his Expert the week before.

  8. I have a strange problem I'm hoping someone could help with. I have a SA TRP that I put a Brazos pre-fit hammer and sear in. The trigger pull is great, all the safety checks are good, but when I load (with dummy rounds) from slide lock by hitting the slide release, the hammer falls to half-cock. If I let the slide slam closed on an empty chamber (like you're not supposed to do), it does not fall to half cock. If I load by racking a round from the slide-forward position, the hammer stays back as it should.

The gun still has the factory disconnector, and an aftermarket flat trigger (EGW). I can't quite wrap my brain around why it would do it while chambering a round, but not on an empty chamber. I'm going to try a factory trigger, just in case, but the disco. does not seem like it should be an issue--stock or not.

Any suggestions (short of calling Bob)?

  9. Does anyone here have any experience shooting moly bullets through an HK? I would assume the same potential problems that GLOCK shooters face would exist with an HK ('problems' may not be the right word--precautions perhaps).

  10. Just a little added update. I spoke to Dawson today, and got them to also produce a .115 wide by .170 tall plain black serrated front, just in case there is anyone who does not want a fiber optic front sight.

  11. Oh ya, just wanted to add that Dawson is also making the front sight in .125" wide as well. I requested they make this sight for two applications: First, you could install just this front sight with your factory rear (likely after painting the rear sight like I did), and get a pretty good looking sight picture. Or, if more accuracy-oriented shooting is your game, you can run the .125" wide front sight with the Dawson rear, having a .140 wide notch, and get a much 'tighter' sight picture (even moreso than the .115 wide front sight / Dawson rear combo).

  12. nice! thanks for sharing. Could you tell me the actual sight hight compared to the factory front sight? I would like to order sights, but I am not sure how they compare to factory heights. I prefer a slightly higher POI....

the front sight looks thinner than factory, which is good as the OEM front sight is way too thick.

There are at least two different height factory front sight heights. The one on both of my P30Ls are right around .175". When I bastardized the Kimber sight to fit, I used a .180 tall, and it seemed to work perfectly. When Dawson made me the new front sight, they used a .170 tall sight, and it gave (me) a slightly higher POI with light bullets. 147s were right on at 25 yards, but 115s were an inch and a half to two inches high at 25. Now this is a sample size of 1, and of someone who is not a great group-shooter, so you are probably going to have to just try them on your gun and see, but for me, the height they used works perfectly. I find that frequently when shooting 'action' sports, on close wide open targets, I often kinda look over the gun a little bit, so this POA / POI being just a bit high works perfectly for me.

  13. Oooo, I like them! Thanks for posting the pictures! Do you think they will be fine enough for 6" square plates at 25 yards?

I don't think these sights would be what limits a person (me :D ) from hitting a 6" plate past 25 yards...

  14. All right boys and girls, here you go.

Just got back from the range and I am very pleased. The sights are exceptional. Fine enough for precision shots, with enough daylight on each side of the front sight to still be fast. They shot to POA with Ranier 147 gr JHP Atlanta Arms ammo at 25 yards, and just a little high with 115 gr Federal. I suspect most won't even notice it, but it did print higher than the 147 ammo. I spoke to Dawson after I left the range and gave them the green light to start making / stocking them, so go ahead and call them if you want them. Keep in mind these will work for any P30 model (L, S, .40, etc) and for the HK45. At this time the configuration will only be plain rear with a fiber optic front, but if enough people ask for a plain front, they will make it. They will also make a front sight slightly taller, and slightly shorter for those wanting to change their POI a little bit. The rear is not serrated, but it has a very rough texture on it that (Dawson says) does the same job--and I'd agree.

  15. Nope, that's my bastardized Kimber front sight (which actually works pretty well). I just got a tracking number in my e-mail from Dawson, and my new sights will be here Friday. If the UPS guy shows up before I go into work at 4pm, you'll have pictures and possibly a range report.

  16. Got a call from Dawson this afternoon. The sights are in the mail! I'll post some pics as soon as I get them.

ETA Oh ya, all you impatient SOBs who ave already called or e-mailed Dawson...They are not in production yet. They are sending me the prototype, and I first have to make sure the dimensions are what I want, and that they shoot to POA. Once I'm satisfied, they will start making them. If they have to change the front sight height, or any other dimensions, it may be another week or two.
