  1. Rather than using Brake Kleen, I like using Carb Cleaner.  It doesn't completely strip all the oil off the metal like Brake Kleen.  It does a fair job on carbon, but it will eat through Nitrile gloves.  Unfortunately, the Peoples Republic of Commieforniastan has banned most of the Carb Cleaners, which I don't understand.  I would think the Communist California Air Resource Board would love CARB Cleaner.

I'm interested in having a single stack 1911 built with a comp to run 9 minor for steel challenge. Are there any custom shops that still build guns like this? Would it be possible to put a threaded barrel/comp on a standard 1911 myself and doing some minor fitting rather than going the custom-build route? Just trying to figure out what the best option is. I don't need a blinged out gun. Just need one that runs well.

I think Briley still builds Steel Challenge 1911's.

On new unfired rounds of LC Nato I'm seeing 1.756" brass or so...on recent factory new unfired FC 223 rounds brass around 1.742".

SAAMI spec for the .223 Remington case length is 1.760 +0/-.30 so anything between 1.730 and 1.760 is within specification.  Better too short than too long.

I pitch it since it trips the load sensor on the Mark 7 / 1050.  I don't hate it quite as much as stepped brass, but  I asked a guy that went to SHOT to go punch someone in the Norma booth straight in the yarbles for making such an annoying thing, but apparently that sort of behavior is not acceptable there :D

Anybody looking at 1 of these they look like they could be pretty fun. I'm thinking about picking 1 up as soon as the price gets down to a little bit and some of the new ways off of them.

Ditto!  I had a Mech Tech way back in the day.  It was a very fun little plinker.  I brought it to a couple of steel challenge practice matches, long before PCC was a thing.  With the Smith, bringing it to the start position with it unbagged and folded could be interesting.

I am missing my left arm at the elbow. The most appropriate pistol competition for me is obviously Precision Pistol or 10 Meter Air pistol. Unfortunately the only clubs that offer those are about 2 hours away. If I was an experienced shooter I might be willing to do that once a month. Unfortunately I have never shot any matches.  A nearby club with weekly practice would work but as I said there are none nearby.

Since your left arm ends at or near the elbow, it may be possible to use your left arm in support of your right hand.  Have you tried using it for support?  Just because you're one handed doesn't necessarily mean you have to shoot Steel Challenge from a Bullseye one handed stance.

You might try some non-traditional stances and different methods of manipulation for reloads, etc... with an airsoft pistol before trying with a firearm.

    I admire your determination!

Started watching a series on Netflix called Damnation.  Was supposed to take place in Iowa, 1931.  One of the characters breaks out a 1911 with race hammer and beavertail grip safety.  Could have been the best series on Netflix but I'll never know because I had to turn it off.

You can comfortably go back and finish watching the series.  There were a number of gunsmiths even as far back as early 1931 that were customizing 1911's.  Hyman S. Lebman was making full-auto 1911's.  Some were in 45ACP and at least a couple in 38 Super.

    https://www.guns.com/news/2012/09/26/lebman-1911-machine-pistol

I'm sure there were other lesser know gunsmiths who could have built the 1911 with modified hammers and extended grips safety/frames to prevent hammer bite and better sights.

  8. I haven't been able to find any Glock mag specific PCC bags.  You might try getting some 1 or 2 inch thick closed cell polyethylene foam sheet and cutting it the width and length of the AR mag pockets with a Glock mag sized notch cut into the foam sized and located so the base pads of your mags just stick out of the AR mag pockets.

    Something like this.

The ORG is a S-show and we all know it.

We love shooting an organized competition with published rules that are the same across the country. Some of us enjoy comparing ourselves to the best at a nation or area event. It's pretty simple.

But when those elected to run all this lose sight of what the place was built to do and instead show their lack of ability to do the job.

Now it appears the chickens are staring to come home to roost. It's sad but I doubt anything will change.

    Build Back Better!  LOL!

    Zombies in the Heartland 2023

This is a long standing match, now in its 10th year, centrally located in Grand Island, Nebraska.  The match is a 10 stages, 3 gun or PCC 2 gun.  Custom zombie targets, amazing props, shooter goodie bag, healthy prize table, awesome staff!  Limited slots still remaining.  Come fight the undead!

    Date?

not sure what he is looking to carry but I can carry over ten magazines, several hundred rounds, my rifle, my pistol, tool kit, ear and eye protection, and more.  The inside is compatible with Velcro, so you you can customize how you want to organize everything

Also since it is for  Steel Challenge I am looking for the mags pockets to be located on the left side of the bag so when placed on a shooting table to the left of the box( in the right direction),  the zipper is facing the box. This would allow for access the mags and for one to easily unzip the case and access the PCC.

Having to assemble your upper and lower at every "Make Ready", then dig through your Murse (Man Purse) for your mags, etc... is not going to make you popular with the RO and the rest of the squad on a 100+ degree day after 7 stages.

  12. How much travel do you have past the Bolt Hold Open when you pull the charging handle?  Not enough travel and there isn't enough dwell time for the bolt hold open to move up in time to catch the bolt, so it catches the bolt carrier.  Same thing happens when the magazine doesn't have time to lift the next round.  The light bolt moves faster....in both directions.

I separate the upper/lower and use the discreet carry case by Bulldog. The bag looks normal when I carry it with my other luggage, checking into a hotel. It’s well made.

    everything else just screams GUN!

That's OK for off the range, but at the range...not so much.  Dr. Dan is looking for gear to use AT the range during a match.

  14. None that I know of with Glock specific mag pockets.

I've used cheap airsoft soft cases like these for many years.  They work well, are cheap, last for several years, are cheap, come in several colors and lengths, and are cheap,  When I shoot PCC, I just put a couple of mags in 3 of the mag pouches.

I haven't used these, but they by the same company and again come in various lengths, colors, and are less obviously gun cases.  I would just carry the mags in a mag wallet slipped inside the case with the PCC.
