  1. Pat,

I tried a variation of your "Twenty" drill today.  Notice I said variation, I didn't pay enough attention to your description and put the targets 1 yard apart instead of 1 foot.  Oops!  Then of course I plastered no-shoots over 1/2 to 2/3 of each target (I'm famous for pulling shots into no-shoots that cover the lower half of the target.)

Great drill!  I couldn't make the 20.00 hit factor, but I'll keep working on it.  Shooting one shot on each target I was averaging .34 transitions between targets.  But when I shot 2 rounds on each target my transitions dropped to .24 between targets???????   With my Limited gun I ran 1.03 .21 .24 .20 .23 .22 .24 .19 = 2.56

Tried my Open gun with pretty much the same results.  My transitions are almost a tenth quicker shooting two shots on each target than they are shooting only one shot on each target.  Any Clues, because I'm clueless.

  2. I've never been able to get a good consistent weak hand draw using the traditional methods.  I get much better results by coming down over the top of the gun and gripping the slide.  My thumb goes UNDER the safety.  I pull the gun straight up until it's clear of the holster, then start an almost normal presentation bringing the gun horizontal and gripping the gun with my weak hand.  I make sure I index the grip safety correctly into the web of my weak hand and line up on the thumb safety so that I get a consistent grip.  I pull my strong hand back almost to my chin and push the gun out as I'm aligning the sights.  I make a fist of my strong hand and hold it against my upper chest.  I can take the safety off as soon as I pull my strong hand clear of the gun (strong hand thumb was under the strong side safety.)

You need fairly large hands for an Open gun using a

C-More.  If you have a tube style scope you can grab the scope.

  3. I gave up on the skateboard tape and switched to AGRIP by Brooks Tactical http://www.brookstactical.com .  It's basically a really tough suede with an adhesive backing. The stuff works very well, wet or dry. It doesn't snag or drag so you can adjust your grip, but as soon as you grip the gun it's locked in place..  It also looks pretty good, doesn't tear up the inside of your jacket or the inside of your arm.  The only downsides are having everybody wanting to fondle your gun and you have to unwrap it if you want to remove the mainspring housing.  It is re-usable, but I replace it once a year.   Happiness is a warm, fuzzy grip, now if they only made it in "Blue Suede"

  4. I worked on target acquisition today and noticed something that may be helpful.  Set two targets at 7 yards 8-10 yards apart.    When I engage a target, snap my head to the second target and make the big swing to the target I have a hard time picking up the sights and tend to over or under swing resulting in bad hits (no visual patience.)  But when I engage a target, snap my head to the other target, then pull the gun in almost to the high ready position, then push out onto the target I get much better hits.  It feels slow, but the splits between targets and the hits are much better.

  5. I like this drill, but then I like most moving and shooting drills.  I set the targets at 15 yards about 3 yards apart.

My times averaged about 3.75-3.90 with the first shot at 1.35 (both feet out of the box).  BUT I had to slow down to 4.25 to get all A's.  I would get at least 1 or 2 C's if I shot any faster.  I've recently been having a problem with just shooting brown instead of shooting A's.  Especially with the second shot.

I did notice that I do not pay any attention to foot position (up/down) while shooting.  I knew where I was in relation to the boxes, but the sights were the only thing I was really conscious of.

  6. Tried using the Force today with my Limited gun and got some interesting results.  I used an IPSC paper target at 7 yards with a small piece of white tape for an aiming point.  Aimed the gun, closed my eyes and gently squeezed the trigger.  Opened my eyes and the sights were on the target about 4 inches higher than my shot.  Tried twice more with the same result.  Tried a double tap, aimed at the tape, closed my eyes and fired twice.  The first shot was on the tape and the second was about 4-5 inches higher.

Hmmm!   Tried 2 shots with my eyes open, first shot on the tape, the second shot was about 1 inch lower.  Double Hmmm!

Nothing like having more questions so I tried using the Force for the draw.   I did a few slow draws and the sights were right on the top 1/4 of the A zone.  Loaded up and did it for real, sure enough an A hit.  YES!  Tried 2 more slow draws with the same result.  Then I went for the gusto.   I'd been averaging 1.10 to 1.15 draws earlier on some other drills.  Hit the timer and banged a 1.12 A zone hit with my eyes closed!  Look MA, I'm the king of the world!

Well that part didn't raise anymore questions, but I'm going to have to think about the sights not coming back to my aiming point without looking.   I've practiced my reloads with my eyes closed, now I'm practicing shooting with my eyes closed, but I think it's going to be a while before I practice shooting on the move with my eyes closed!

  7. One of my all time favorites is Silverado.  It even has John Cleese (sp?) "You're not from around these parts, are you?"

The Junkman (sequel to 60 Seconds)

    El Mariachi
