This weekend at the TriCounty match, I had something scary happen as I was walking from one stage to the next...DROPPED GUN. I'm always very sure to check that it's locked into my Guga Ribas, so I was very startled when it happened. I looked down at it, and then at my belt and realized the entire holster piece had come out. I asked another RO to come over and pick it up so we could walk over to the safety table. He said he had one, and this was the reason he got rid of it.
I like the Guga, but I was worried the rest of the match. So I came up with a little fix - drilled and tapped a 2-56 hole, to put a 2-56 socket head cap screw into. So now even if the knob comes out again, the holster can't drop through the belt attachment like this weekend. Sure I can't take it off the belt on a whim, but I like the idea of the added security my "Safety Screw" provides.
Hope this help someone else from a dropped gun. What if it hadn't dropped until I got to LAMR on the next stage? That would've could've been disastrous!

Echo what Joe said. Picked that trick up a few years ago from folks on this very forum when I was just a BEginner

When I'm older and you're all gone I'll be sure to stop by those estate sales. I've got only a few thousand, but I think the value in having a large stockpile is to be able to do your buddies a solid and be able to loan some to them. I mean think about it, if your shooting buddy said 'I can't go to the match with you this weekend, no more primers" and you're sitting on years of supply, why not help someone out.

It boils down to how many matches do you want to risk experimenting learning to tune your own mags versus paying for something that works. Just like we buy built guns, not just parts kits because we want the guns to run, we buy built/tuned mags because we want to go to a match with the confidence that they'll work. For my Open Gun, JPL built it, and for a relatively small fee he built me tuned mags to go with the gun.
That being said, as an engineer, I'm trying to build some mags and learn to tune them myself. I'm positive my mags will cause me time and competitive edge WHEN they fail during a match, but for me, it's about the learning process. And I've got a full set of mags I know work, so if I screw up one stage with my home-tuned mag, I'll just not use it until I can diagnose my failure.
Good luck!

Al, just get yourself a 1x30" belt sander from Harbor Frieght - I think it's got about a 40 grit belt on it. Should take care of that extractor no problem
What I will say about files, is typically I've found the cheap ones to not be worth a damn - save a few bucks but then potentially ruin a part because you have to push too hard, or whatever. Since it's your guns you're working on buy quality.

I'm a little late on the reply, but it might be worth while for someone else down the line doing some research. I went with JPL for my open gun. I know John, shoot with him at the local matches, and have seen his builds just run. When I expressed interest in having something built, all the folks who had guns from him got together with me after a match so I could try out the various configurations to see what I liked best. Everyone is different. I went with long and heavy. I've been really happy with the gun. So much so, that I jumped in the queue for a Limited gun from him.
One of the biggest contributing factors in my choice was that he's local and I know him. There are lots of great builders out there, so my cheif recommendation to someone looking to buy is to find a gunsmith with a great reputation, who you can establish a repore/relationship with and from whom you'll have a pride in ownership. These guys put a lot of work into the guns - to me they're not just objects, but a piece of them.

This was for the STI Tactical in 45acp - full dust cover, 18# spring.
Glad everyone else has their work around!
Dave - let me know when your block of wood wears out (you've seen my moon clip pusher right?) - I'll send you one of these plastic jobs.

The other night I was working on two guns that have bull barrels. So I needed to compress the spring and reverse plug and put my little paper clip in it to reassemble after cleaning. It was a real pain in the ass. So I came up with this. I look a 1911 bushing tool, drilled a hole in the center slightly larger than the guide rod, then milled a little slot for the paper clip to pass through. So now I can get a better handle on compressing the spring and putting the paper clip in.
Hope this helps. What other shortcut tools have you guys made?

Been happy with the S&A I've put on all of my single stacks. Haven't tried a techwell, but it looks like a big target to hit!

Is the advantage on the reload really worth the different in point of impact? On my 625 shooting 200gr or 230gr I notice a big difference of POI especially on longer shots. I'd just go with the 230RN all around. If you're burning up ammo that you have a local match, I don't think anyone would really care.

I have 2x170 + 2x140 that are tuned, and 2x124 that are not, and a bunch of tubes sitting in bags. I've never seen a stage yet that i needed to go beyond starting with the 170, and reloading twice - so I'm good with 1x170 + 2x140 for any particular stage. I figure to have the extra 170 in case I go last on one stage and first on the next stage (I'm not holding up the squad reloading the big stick). Seems to work for me so far, but as you can see the trend is more mags will be better for you!

I reuse but only as practice ammo.
Ditto. Screwed up rounds go in a a big yogurt container. When I'm desperate I take apart the rounds to salvage and make practice ammo.

Have fun folks! Sounds like a blast!

The other question that may matter more than being precisely on the numbers is does all your ammo feed in your guns and make the power factor you want? If yes, I wouldn't worry about 0.010" variation.

Workout in the heat to get your body used to functioning in it. Hydrate. Not just the day of the match but the days and weeks up to the match - I learned this from someone who runs marathons. I like sports drinks because they replace the electrolytes your body needs.
At Area1 it was pretty hot and effecting everyone - some more than others. Some of my squad decided they didn't need to tape anymore. I was just out there taping and having a good old time.

Ok, now that that is all peachy, does anyone know where to get these Bolen parts, people speak of? Thanks
Got mine from Shooters Connection, but I believe Speed Shooters International should have them too.

As often posted, the search button is your friend. Here's a thread from not too long ago that I found:

Search term was "marking magazines"
I use a p-touch label maker.

Paul,
On the mags gun I bought from you, I dropped Bolen follower and spring in and got 20 no problem with an SNL basepad. Just ground a little off the follower where it engaged the slide stop. To do this, I took the top end off, put the slide stop in, then inserted a mag. I used a scribe to mark where the slide stop touched the follower. Then took the follower out of the mag and CAREFULLY ground it away.
Or the easier solution and you'll get 21 - get Howard's mags. He's made a science of blueprinting mags.

I've been shooting 200gr plated bullets (Xtreme/West Coast and Rainier) with WST (up to 5.0gr).

You loctite guys kills me! That would've been so much smarter. I got a milling machine from a friend, and now all I want to do is drill holes
For those of you with drill presses or milling machines you're dying to use, here's one more hole to drill
For the rest, I suppose loctite is a faster less expensive solution ![](//content.invisioncic.com/r270761/emoticons/default_mellow.png)
