  1. Just to let everyone know we have been working on the new trigger. And I have a question...

The prototyping of the new, flat trigger is 95% finished. I'm sourcing some new springs, pins, adjustment screws etc. Quite a bit of details going into this trigger. It will be made out of 416 stainless steel. It's a tight trigger with no sideways slop and from my testing will allow a very tight pre- and over-travel adjustment. Pretty cool and it'll be a huge improvement on the EAA / Tanfoglio trigger. It tightens up the movement which will be felt in a smoother trigger pull and shorter reset etc.

We've been working until the early morning for several days and we came up with a great idea last night. And idea that'll take us a little longer to develop, but will give a super nice flexibility.

The goal is to make one trigger that accomplishes all the goals set forth in the poll that's been running for a while. However, we have the option to go into production on a short, flat trigger. It'll have all the pre- and over-travel adjustment that we've been working on. My machinist and I were talking last night about holding off on production until we get the final one-trigger-fits-all ready.

But... we can start making the shortest possible trigger ever made for these guns... It looks super-racy / tech and will be the perfect trigger for anyone with small hands / short fingers. I don't have small hands and I like it and could use it. So that's the word I'm putting out... should we get started and make them? It'll still take a little while to get all the parts sourced, but we can start producing the actual trigger and get it out quite a bit quicker than the one-for-all trigger.

Opinions ? Please everyone looking for a shorter trigger say YES.

My vote has always been for triggers first :) So I am in.

  2. You will notice the trigger gets better with shooting. After about 1000 rds, I no longer felt like I needed a trigger job done on mine.

Have a new Limited, and would like to know if there is any differences between the blue mags and the chromed ones Henning is selling? I would like to save a few dollars if possible. Also, need to get an action job done, where is the best place to go? Would the hammer group Henning sells do the trick, or does it need to go to a gunsmith? Thanks for any help, Dave

Personally I like the blues mags more they seem to be more reliable. The action job henning sells is very nice it will drop in and probably will not need a gunsmith. For a trigger job, I think Henning is the best person to ask about that.

Also let is break in and see how it feels. only other thing you might do is a 13lb trigger spring.. Shoot it first get 500-1000 rounds through it.

  3. Thanks all. The gun I have is a large frame. What is the advantage of Hennings hammer compared to the original?

I will order the hardened searspin and hammer pins also.

with a hard sear and hammer you can have a better trigger job and keep it for a very long time. the factory hammer and sear are a little soft.

I think one of Hennings hammers he has had for 10 years at least?

  4. extractor and extractor spring. I replace these about 5000rds. The spring is usuallythe problem but the extractor may wear.

I am really liking the extra power extractors from Wolff, and for sure thats a good one to carry.

  5. Leo has a good list. The only thing I would add would be the Rear sight. I have gone through three of them on my gun.

I usually don't mention spare sights, cause I shoot open :) , but I did see a limited rear sight break this weekend at A3. It can be very hard to shoot small steel plates without a rear sight blade

  6. OK, today started out really good at Area 3 for me. Nice weather, my shooting seemed to be getting better on each stage. Then it all fell apart. Actually, my .40 S&W Match fell apart. On the 6th stage for our squad, the hook on the extractor broke off. End of the day for me. So I have already ordered a replacement, plus a spare from Henning. Now I am wondering what else I should have in my spare parts kit. I ran a search on this forum with no results. What else fails most frequently with a Tanfoglio? As I mentioned, mine is a Match but I assume there are parts that fail across the brand. A slide stop sounds like a likely candidate.

    Any suggestions?

I carry firing pin, slide stop pin hardened (I have broken 1 so far), and extractor for hard parts, spring wise firing pin, sear and recoil. past that spare gun.

  7. Henning, will you be at the Open Nationals ?

Last time I talked to him he was planning on open and limited. He is still in Norway till the end of the month after shooting the Nordic Rifle Match.

  8. Just received the Barry mount and the C-more is mounted. It seems it is possible to adjust the windage from both sides, with the locking screw on the right. Has anyone got any other experience with this that they would like to share, is it going to take 500 rounds to sight this in and what distance do you sight yours in for. Its on my ancient Gold Team in 45 that I mostly shoot pins with.

To make it easier I reverse my Cmore adjustments. if not you can bend a allen wrench or you can pull the mount off and do it that way. the mount should true back up.

I sight in at 17 yards with a 38 super.

  9. I have a similar setup but a couple of extra 20 rounders. If it were me I'd add another 23 round magazine, that way you have a spare. Four usable magazines doesn't allow much leeway if one gets damaged.

I guess I am mag rich...

personally I like to have 2 big sticks just in case time get short and i cant clean one between stages. and I have 4 - 24 rounders.... But honestly you will be fine with what you have. I just prefer 24 rounders to stock

  10. Hi Neomet,

Everyone uses SR in 38sc to prevent primer flow with the ultra-high pressures that are typical for an Open Gun. Depending on the powder you use you can usually get away with SP depending on brand. If you are still shooting the Tanfoglio and have a light hammer spring you'll need to balance the primer hardness out with sensitivity. I believe Federal SP should work pretty well for you right now. Wolf might work but I know Leo had some issues with light strikes when he tried them. CCIs are a NO NO period with light hammer springs. Two powders that seem pretty forgiving pressure wise are N350 and IMR 7625. Best thing you can do is test as load/gun combos tend to differ and what works for one might not work for you and vice versa.

I use SR for 7625 and when I loaded N350, But I have a lot of SR. But I know henning just uses SP for his 7626 loads. Not so sure i would want to use them with N350 if you are getting that hot.

  11. I also played with one at the NRA show. It's nice and small, but I could not get past the lack of intermediate magnification... anything in between 1x and 4x is blurry, so you have to make sure when you change magnification that you turn the ring all the way.

I sent in a scope to be checked out and Valdada was nice very fast on scope replacement.

  12. Thanks Leo. I have prepped the sear and hammer both to a mirror shine with an arkansas stone. I filed the trip leg back on the sear to shorten the reset and also added a light relief angle to the sear to get it to break a bit sooner without so much creep. I did not change the primary angle.....only stoned it to remove any imperfections. I filed the tab to clear the safety. I did not cut the hammer hooks any. I did tweak the sear spring some to lighten it. I'm at about 2.75# with a good short positive reset. I had to add in some more overtravel so the sear would not bump the hammer hooks upon release or it would be much shorter. Am I on the right track? Could you maybe PM me what you do. I'm not an amateur when it comes to trigger jobs on most guns. This is just my first ever experience with a Witness.

    Thanks!

Honestly sounds like you are well on your way... what do your hammer hooks measure now? they should be cut to around .012. a lot of the time you have to make sure most of the half cock is shortened or even removed so it doesn't have problems with it.

Did you also do the other standard things for a trigger job on one? smooth the trigger shoe sides, polish the top of the trigger plunger? sounds like you have the 13lb hammer spring.

  13. Any chance you would ever do a tutorial on how to do a trigger job or any of the tricks associated with doing so?

I've got the EGW sear and hammer and prefer to do stuff myself. Any help is appreciated.

Henning is in Norway at the moment shooting the Nordic Rifle Championships and will be gone till the end of the month. But I do know I have talked him about this and at the present he doesn't have any plans to do any trigger related videos. Its too risky someone doing a trigger job and not fully knowing what they are doing and having accidents happen.

On a different note.. depending if you have prepped you are getting very close to a decent trigger right there and a smith should be able to smooth out the rest. And maybe he will let you watch him work?

If your trigger and sear arent prepped it takes a little bit of work to get them going.

  14. I will get some pictures up soon. No Jordan I work saturdays, that is why you never see me at the matches. Jason you can borrow it anytime, I kind of feel like a drug dealer. First time is free,,then it gets expensive. :roflol: We really miss you around here Diana. Are you thinking of going to area 4 this year.

Here are the pics. I really miss you guys too! Starting to miss hearing things like, "Vertically Challenged" or "You sure you can reach over that wall to hit those targets?". :roflol:

As of right now, Area 4 is definitely on my calendar. Not 100% I'll be there, but it will be great to shoot with you guys again!

interesting they took weight off the comp... I wonder if they sped up turn around now. I have just kept shooting mine because there was no reason to have it sit on a shelf 6 months.

  15. I'll inspect the pistol a little more closely for burrs, etc. I haven't seen any yet. I like the idea of cycling virgin rounds through and seeing if they're marked up at all, I'll try that. I did a quick polish of the chamber and ramp when I got the gun.

I really like the suggestion that next time it happens to see if it's the slide or cartridge that's jammed, great tshooting suggestion.

I'll start chamber-checking match rounds too.

I have one idea that occurred to me this morning -- I'm shooting Montana Gold JHP bullets and I suppose it's possible the hollow point is catching on something (sort of a semi-nosedive that still manages to feed) and nicking off a bit of jacket around the HP edge. The easy test would be CMJ bullets, but I have tons of the JHP to use first so I'll see what I can find out.

Does anyone think 1.175 is too long of an OAL for an EAA Witness .40?

That length is just fine. I have probably put around 8k of Zero 180GR JHP and never had a problem. But I have never tried Montana Golds in my limited, But they could have a slightly different profile then Zero's. Like a lot of people have said. chamber check a few rounds and see what ones arent working and it should be easy to tell why.. crimp or sizing..
