Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks to all for your comments. My only wondering was if there was enough "pressure" drop when using 9mm major load if the "free space" or "extra space" or "increased air volume to powder volume" or whatever term fits the conditions would be significant. But hey, lots of good info from reading all the posts.
  2. Thanks superdude. I didnt know what to call it so I used "free space." Maybe should of said "extra space."
  3. The free space I have when using 6.7 Auto-comp. Makes 170 PF on my crono out of CZ TS Cezechmate. OAL is 1.165/1.169 with round nose. Using the same OAL I still have plenty of round to crimp, therefor creating more space between top of powder and bottom of bullet. The question still stands as if there a pressure reduction.
  4. Some help with understanding pressure. Question, How much does free space, the space between the powder and the bottom of the bullet, help, if any, in keeping peak pressure down on a 9mm major load. Example: I use Berrys 124 round nose. OAL is 1.165. If I use Berrys 124 flat point and load to the same OAL of 1.165, and assuming powder charge, accuracy, stay the same, I gain about .070 inches (2 mil) of space from top of powder to bottom of bullet. Will, the peak pressure be lowered significantly? the peak pressure be lowered some? peak pressure even change? Thanks for any help,
  5. High power, I am thinking of going to 9mm major. I have been trying to read as much as I can on the subject of reusing 9mm brass after being shot at major PF. Question, do you use the "once fired" brass more then once or do you shoot and leave it? garp.....
  6. type error... insert "I was "watching" you...."
  7. teros. I was under the impression that the RO with the shooter, watches the shooter for safety violations. The scorer should be watching "targets"/down range for such just occurrences of (word of the day) "fails to shoot at." At least that is what I do when helping out at our local shoots. I get shooters all the time asking where they hit this or that. I tell them I do not know, I was you you(them) and the gun for "unsafe" violations. Should I pay more attention down range of the shooter?
  8. justaute, Thank you , that was the type of wording I was looking for. Now I know..... **g***
  9. This is off topic some, but in the original statement, the word "engaged" was brought up. I looked in the index and glossary out of curiosity and did not find it defined. Is "shooting" at a target considered engaged with or without a least one hit, or just simply pointing the gun at the target area, as was stated before the jams, considered "engaging?" I still working on trying to learn the rules... Thanx
  10. I had the same problem with a complete drop in Zev trigger some years back. It fired as you let the trigger reset. I removed the Zev and went back to the OME. The Zev got put a way and lost/forgot about after a divorce and moving. I had some other fellow shooters at the range with Zev and had no problems. I decided to retry shooting my Glock .40 in limited division, however, I could not find the Zev I had to compare with theirs. So I sucked it up, bought another complete Zev trigger package and put it in. Worked just fine. Some time later, I found the first Zev I had forgotten about. I comparde that one to the new one. By just eye sight alone, it "appeared" to me that the part of the curcifix that rides on the stricker, did not have the same angle of bend as the new one I had bought. If you look at OME Glock trigger, they just ride on the leading edge of the stricker as you pull the trigger back, before they drop off the edge and let the stricker go forward to hit the primer. With the older Zev having a "flatter" profile, it was barely riding the edge of the striker. With the older Zev trigger assemble, my assumption was, that with any moving mechanical parts, that when you add up all the slight moving wiggles as the parts are engaging, that it let the older, flatter Zev trigger "slip" off the stricker, thus causing a primer strike on "trigger reset." I shot the the Glock most of all last year with the newer Zev and had no tigger resetting malfuntions. Since the curcifix is a stamped out part, my "assumption" is it just did not get made to the optimim tolareces. Needlees to say, it was awesome being at the range trying out a new trigger and having a round go off on trigger reset. ( I won't admit it, but I think I peed my pants a little). It helps reinforce rule #2. Never let your muzzle cover anything you do not wish to destroy.
  11. I just polished a feed ramp on one of my guns this past weekend. I started with 400 wet/dry wraped around a empty case. Just a few lite strokes to get the sanding going the right direction. (sanding the same direction the bullet tip would travel up the feed ramp) As stated, only a few strokes with this low grit count. One does not want to remove metal with to many strokes. I moved to 600 w/d wrapped around an empty case. Sanding duration depends on how you preceive what finish you desire. I then moved to using 1200 w/d to achieve a mirror like finish. Again, wrapped around an empty case, using sanding storkes going in the same direction as the bullet tip would tavel up the feed ramp. Here is where I committed my sin to some. I used my Dremel tool. Please, don't throw the Holy water at me and call me heathenistic names just yet!! I used the polishing wheel (not the one that looks like a bullet) with just a small dab of Mothers Polishing compound. I held the Dremel so the wheel was spinning in the same direction as my sanding strokes. Thus, producing a final mirror finish. Some may ask why I needed to polish the feed ramp when the gun worked just fine as is. Answer: I have guns, so there fore I am drawn to theme. To tinker, dissasemble, reassemble. To shoot, to clean. To do it all over again.
  12. As Ultimo-Hombre said, "...the best carry gun is the one that you carry." I went through the phases of what gun to carry concealed. I asked myself, Do I carry the same platform as I what I shoot most often? Meaning from a competition standpoint. I have carried from a 1911's (was always making my pants fall down due to its weight) to a Glock, to what I currently carry, which is not currently my competition platform or off duty (yes, I am in law enforcement). My early years in thinking was to "carry what I shoot and shoot what I carry." I think that does hold some merit with new or "beginner" shooters. So as not to confuse what platform you are shooting when faced with a "stressful" situation. With years in shooting now, I have no problem with distinguishing what gun I have. One for play, one for work, and one when I am out and about. For obvious reasons, my super duper race holster is never going to be concealed carry holster. Now, by having different platforms, it puts me in the type of mode that prefer to be in. With the blaster on, I will make fun of all my fellow shooters when they run by a target, we joke and laugh, and have a good time at the local match. When I have me duty weapon on, I know I have to be,nice, courteous and generally helpful for the public that I serve. When I have my concealed carry on and I am heading to the local quickie mart for my ritual soda pop you best not get between me and my Mt Dew. I will crush a ice cube on your forehead...lol
  13. KB, I am/will be in the same boat as you. I have been shooting a XDm in .40 this past year. I have finely put the funds to gather to buy a STI .40 Edge. woo-hoo!! I shot many a year (early on in my IPSC years) with a single stack. I love the feel of the 19/2011 grip. Don't get me wrong, the XDm had a fine feel to it, but I am all giddy-- like a school boy on the play ground ready to punch the cute girl in pigtails-- waitin' for the STI to arrive!! And I will even go you one further. I have our state match on 8/29 and I am using my buddies STI to shoot. Nothing like changing guns 2 weeks before a major event. But I love a challenge. I just used his gun the past Saturday at our local match. I went straight from the XDm to the 2011. I was whacking that trigger, smoke and fire was a belching from the muzzle, brass was a flying everywhere!! I love it. Daddy is home...
  14. What I see myself doing on just short steps, or just a turn from one side to the other with out taking a step, depending on the COF, is I drop the gun some, take that one step or slight turn, then have to bring my gun back up and re-acquire the sight picture. I have not broke my self of just turning, or taking that one step and keeping my sight picture in front of me. I do that little "gun dip." Arrrrggggg!!!
  15. exterminate ?!! I wish I had the magic pen from Doctor Who. I would never miss again!! Now, where did I leave the Tartis??
