Rule 9.4.6.2 reads:

Where static scoring paper targets are used, a shot (or shots)

fired more than 0.30 seconds over the set time, will be considered

overtime. For example, if the time is 5.00 seconds, a shot

(or shots) at 5.31 seconds or more would be considered overtime.

Overtime shots will be penalized the maximum possible

scoring value of each shot so fired. If the overtime shot results

in extra hits on the target, only the specified number of shots

may be scored.

Does this mean that the shooter does not earn Extra Hit or Extra Shot penalties if the shot occurred after the time limit? Yes they earn Overtime shot (-5) penalties, but if that results in an extra hit, does the extra hit not exist? Does the RO have to determine which hit was overtime and therefore nonexistent? That's my thought because the rulebook recommends the use of disappearing targets instead of the 0.3 second buffer after the stop beep, so the overtime shots should not exist. Thoughts from the gurus?

Lets say for instance you are required to fire a total of 6 shots, 2 at each of 3 targets. Your 6th shot registers late. You receive a late shot penalty or a minus 5.

If you fire a 7th shot, regardless of the time, you receive an extra shot penalty.

If you have an extra hit, regardless of the number of shots fired you receive an extra hit penalty. For instance you shoot at T-2, but actually hit T-1, it is a miss on T-2 and an extra hit on T-1.

There is an exception for "cross firing" where it can be established a fellow shooter was shooting on the wrong targets.

Extra shots are scored at the shooter. Extra hits are scored at the targets. Late shots are scored on the timer.

What Gary said, except I'd add one thing: in his example, the best 6 hits on the target would be scored, even if there were 7 hits on a particular target. The RO doesn't have to remove any particular hit; he just scores the best 6 and the penalties take care of the rest.

Now you've got me thinking in the right frame of mind. Fixed time is treated like Virginia Count (while within the time limit). So if the shooter makes too many shots and/or hits within the time limit, appropriate penalties are earned (-10 ea).

If the shooter makes late shots, he earns overtime shot penalties (-5) until he reaches the specified number of shots and extra shot penalties (-10) for all subsequent shots. He also earns extra hit penalties for each hit above the specified number regardless of when they occured. Only the specified number of shots will be scored, as usual, no extra credit.
