yallknowho
I took my new colt series 80 to the range today, fired around 100 rounds, and noticed some little strips of metal in the pistol's grease. Is this type of shearing normal for a new 1911? those little specks are the shearings. the stuff in there are those aforementioned shearings. DarkSmileyX
It's hard to tell from the pics but are you sure it's not unburned powder?
HSMITH
What color is the metallic material in the grease?
yallknowho
it looks golden in color, like copper.
yallknowho
I noticed little pieces like that in my steyr m9-a1 when I haven't before. on both guns the pieces were stuck in the slide glide, which I had just got.
yallknowho
I wiped down my pistol and didn't notice any extraordinary wear.
John Dunn
I'd clean the slide and frame and check for wear/galling. What kind of grease is that?
yallknowho
slide glide #1.
want2race
It's quite possible that it's shaving some brass upon feeding or extraction. Could be rough magazine lips, feed ramp or breech face.
Catfish
Are you shooting lead?
HSMITH
A little brass being chewed up isn't abnormal, not that it is a perfect situation but it isn't unusual at all. If you don't see any unusual wear I would keep on going.
yallknowho
I think the shards are coming off the rim of the casings. I checked my snap caps Ive been practicing with, and the rim edges are chewed up. am I using too much grease? I read that slide glide should be applied liberally, but how much do you guys use? -JQ-
I get a lot of that when shooting magtech...ymmv
redwoods
Clean the gun and look at the shiney parts, where there might be wear. After a while the rails will not have bluing on them anymore and that is where there is contact with other parts. Look at your brass before and then after shooting them. It could also be from your bullet like the other guys said.
