They are not an explosive until mixed. I was at an event where some Tannerite was brought out, and we hit it numerous times with 223 and could not set it off. One shot from 308 did it every time. Never tried 12 ga slugs (I think we wanted to be further away than any of us thought we could hit it reliably with slugs). No alcohol was involved.
