Rangertim
I just purchased a Dillon Square Deal B press to start reloading .45 for my Limited-10 gun. I'm looking for a good proven load for .45 (major). I purchased some SWC lead bullets and Winchester 231 powder. Does anyone have a good setup with these components? I'm also open to suggestions using different bullets and powder. I appreciate any and all help. DVC!
1911user
I use 5.3gr of 231 with a 200gr LSWC to make major from a 5" 1911. You'll eventually want a chronograph to fine tune and verify your loads.

Rangertim
Sorry but it takes me 5.6 or 5.7 with 231 to make major in my 5 inch gun...under a 200gr H&G #68 Most people I've talked to use around 5.7grn of 231 with the 200grn SWC. I've heard the difference in the H&G 68 and others is length. Is the 68 better than others for feeding reliability? My scale came in today, so it's reloading for me all day tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

uscbigdawg
Accurate # 7 and (regular) Hodgdon (spellig) Clays are great too. It's tough to beat the cheap shootin' 231 gets you, and if you're not going anywhere it's okay. It is temperature and altitude sensative (barometric pressure). Seen some 175 loads spike to the 190's "back in the ol' days". Rich

TonyT
I used 4.8 to 5.0 gr. of W-231 or 3.6 gr. Clays behind the 200gr. LSWC in 45 ACP. More recently I have switched to 4.0 gr. American Select or 4.2 gr. WST, both were somewhar cleaner than W-231. That being said, W-231 and Bullseye are probably the most universally used pistol powders.
