RUAG vs GECO small pistol primers (and an aside re SPP availability and pricing in France)

Hello all and friendly greetings from France 👋

At last a glimmer of hope on availability of SPP (I'm OK for this season with my old stocks bought at 21€/1000 in 2019 😄 but that was then..! )

  • S&B 75€/1000 and there is some stock (at last!)
  • RUAG 65-70€/1000, also fairly good supplies
  • GECO ≈112€/1000 (for reference only - not available at present)

This is about half the price of late 2022 (market shifted post 24 FEB 2022).

But my question is about reliability of RUAG (all white packaging, 100/tray) v GECO (branded black sticker, 250/tray); a local gunshop was wary of the RUAG, saying they are second tier quality from the GECO production lines. Photos below.

Any thoughts or feedback on your experience would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Thanks for your reply @synchronicity

After speaking to local armorers (Eric Grauffel in France/GECO IPSC team Germany), I learned that the two products are identical.

  • Red sticker on outer/black plastic trays for retail
  • White sticker on outer/white plastic for wholesale and commercial reloading businesses

For info, prices are now 50€ per 1000 in the EU (June 2023). Thats 30% less than 6 months ago.

How is supply and price for SPPs in North America at present?

USA Availability has been getting better and pricing has been coming down in recent weeks/months.

If you are lucky you can get SPP for under $65USD/K. Common pricing is $70-75 USD/K. This is for CCI, Winchester, Fiocchi, Ginex, Servicos, and Remington.

We peaked out around $100-110/K depending on location during late 2022/early 2023.

Hi tkss_burgundy,

Do you have a link supporting the claim below? I'm not able to find any small pistol primers under 75 Euro per 1000 at the moment.

Thanks!

Here in Finland (also EU), primers are nowhere to be found. If you are able to locate some, the price is usually about 0,15€/primer (that would be 150€/1000 if that amount would be available anywhere).

Thank you to all who took a moment to read my post yesterday ;)

I need to ask for a reshoot of my comment above:

  • overgeneralisation - I cannot say what prices are across 27 EU states!
  • the 49.50€/k was, in fact, an offer from the range shop in Germany that hosts the Infinity Open (Philippsburg) for folks shooting the match. I do not know if GECO/RUAG were sponsors or if this was simply a limited offer to support the match. GECO is the supplier of match ammo for the match (awesome event btw).
  • @RGA no I cannot find a link to support my claim, my apologies - indeed, ~75€/k is the going rate for what I could see online late last night
  • Setting aside my generalisation, the small group of IPSC friends with whom I train and compete in France agree that the market for SPPs is softening somewhat. That theory would seem to be supported by this offer in Germany, given it was local product of 'fresh' stock (lot # supports this) made available in conjunction with (and limited to) a fairly high profile Level 3 on the European circuit.
  • as for available now Fiocchi +/- 75€ as @Maximis228 mentioned above, a little S&B and Ginex too for 80€/k. No sign of CCI or Federal. I feel for @JonasAberg - that's where we were 6-8 months ago - I hope you have enough to get through the next couple of seasons.
