Big Shooter
I am pretty excited to announce the First Annual Badger Trekker Run-n-Gun, being held at the Oconomowoc Sportsman's Club on September 2nd, 2023. The MD's have been involved in competitive shooting for decades, and RnG's specifically for a few years. The rest of the staff have been heavily involved in all forms of competition in the SE WI and NE IL areas. RnG is the next step or two beyond USPSA or 3-Gun style shooting. (You young coppers or military folks...come out and put yer money where your mouth is. (Old folks welcome to.)) I hope to see quite a few BEForums members there. Payment and registration will be on PractiScore, but are still TBD as we work a few things out. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Here's a link to our FaceBook (I know...) page. Badger Trekker 2023 5k/10k Run-n-Gun at the Oconomowoc Sportsman’s Club Sullivan, WI September 2, 2023 The 2023 Badger Trekker is a Run-n-Gun featuring 5k or 10k distances. A “shooting biathlon,” it combines aspects of a trail run, mud run, obstacle course, and a multi-gun match. The Trekker is not for the faint of heart. If you dislike mud and water, pushups, heights, or physical challenges, this is probably not the event for you! This event is not intended for inexperienced shooters - you must have an adequate understanding of firearms safety and skills. This is a test of man (or woman,) and equipment alike. Everyone competes equally - there are no divisions. Stages offer a variety of challenges and unique opportunities, both mental and physical. It’s intended to give you a good idea of how the environment and mental/physical fatigue affect your shooting and performance. Think of the Trekker as less of a competition and more of an educational tool to test your gear, mindset, and fitness. Aside from a few required items, equipment is largely up to you. You’ll quickly find out if that Amazon special is “just as good” as the name-brand. You’ll find out exactly how in shape you are dragging kit through the mud. You’ll find out how good of a shooter you are when stress and fatigue set in. If you’ve ever shot USPSA, IDPA, or a 3-gun match, you’ll notice a few similarities, and some big differences. (There is no place for a cart full of gear here - how are you gonna drag that across a deep creek?) What you carry/don’t carry on your body can determine your success or failure! Above all else, a good attitude is a must! (He's not starting the stage in that nasty water, in the jagged rusty culvert, because it’s good for his complexion.) Registration: Registration will be handled via Practiscore, stay tuned here, a link is forthcoming. 5K registration is $100, and includes a cool t-shirt . 10K registration is $125, and includes a cool t-shirt and a couple additional shooting stages.Cancellation: If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration as soon as possible. No call no shows will be automatically waitlisted at future events. I will publish a sliding cancellation policy prior to going live on PractiScore. Understand that we are not in this to make money, but we do have expenses to pay!Match Day Schedule: Registration and check in: 6:30-7:30am Safety briefing: 7:30am First runners out: 9:00amHow It Works: The Badger Trekker is a centerfire biathlon that is a distance of 5k or 10k, your choice. Participants start at predetermined times and follow a clearly-marked path that spans the club property. Any and all natural obstacles like hills and water may be used against you. Pay attention to signage as the 5k and 10k courses share parts of the path and also deviate from one another. Of course, the 10k route contains more stages than the 5k. The trails and path itself are well marked. The club has 80 acres and vigilant neighbors, so all participants are required to stay on the marked path throughout the run. The trail may feature difficult terrain but this on purpose. You’ll likely experience a little bit of everything except paved roads. Be mindful of other participants and traffic at all times. Shooting stages are located in established bays at various points along the trail and each is under the direct supervision of Range Officers. Stages contain unique shooting and physical challenges and distances vary. The longest rifle target will be around 300 yards, and handgun targets might be out to 50 yards. Every stage contains a par time to prevent back-ups and keep things moving. Shooters will be stopped at par time regardless of progress and penalties for missed targets, etc..., will be given accordingly. Hope you're not afraid of heights. Scoring is similar to other action shooting matches, where rank is determined on a sliding scale. After the top finisher, everyone scores based on a percentage relative to that. Both time and shooting are scored and factored in your final result. All participants MUST attend the match meeting and safety brief taking place the morning of the event. Here you will be given your specific start time. Run order will be random. Participants MUST stay on the marked path at all times. Cutting corners and deviating from the trail may take you into firing ranges, private property, or dangerous terrain. Except in case of emergency, ROs are not permitted to help participants in any way; and they will not help you track your wait time. ROs will ensure you understand the course of fire and are the final say at each stage. When a stage is finished, you must show the RO an empty mag well or chamber for both firearms, then the RO will point you in the right direction.Equipment and Fitness Requirements: The Badger Trekker is a “run what you brung” style match, meaning you can use any gear you choose (with a few exceptions). Want to use your M1 Garand and honor your bad-ass grandfather? Have mad cop skills with a .38 special? Or do you favor the ultra tacticool tricked out Mk18? Most people run an AR15, but any safe center fire rifle and handgun are welcome. There is NO zeroing or sighting in at this event. Come prepared.Required equipment: Reliable, sighted in rifle Reliable, sighted in handgun Magazines for both Rifle ammo count: TBD Handgun ammo count: TBD Holster that covers the trigger of your handgun, no soft holsters permitted Sling for rifle that allows safe carry Ear and eye protection Stopwatch or time keeping device Water and/or food to munch on while you run A belt, bag, chest rig, or plate carrier to carry everything Footwear and clothes appropriate for the weather and terrain Pen and note padWhat NOT to bring: Your favorite tacti-cool USPSA/3-Gun cart or wagon A firearm you can’t be safe with (too heavy, not familiar, etc) Steel core, magnum, penetrator, armor piercing, green tip, or tracer ammo Participants should be in good health as the event is physically demanding. Please consider any physical limitations you may have as your health is your responsibility. Drink plenty of water and beware of over-exertion. Move at a pace that is comfortable. There’s only one way to get to that stage…and it’s the opposite of staying dry! Dress and protect your phone accordingly. Accommodations and Meals: The Oconomowoc Sportsman’s Club is located about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee. Ample food, lodging, and shopping are available within a few miles. Registration does not include meals, but there will be food available on site. We recommend that you bring your own drinks and snacks as well. We have several sponsors on board, some big and some local; even a couple big & local sponsors. A huge thanks go to The Oconomowoc Sportsman's Club, Bravo Company, Forward Controls Design, Swampfox Optics, Rapid Defense and SafeSide, LLC; and more on the way. Any further description of the shooting challenges? Only a little bit... Round count is fairly low...something like 55 pistol and 43 rifle. I don't remember if that's for the 5K or 10K. Most targets are steel and the remainder are rubber-like Throom targets. You'll be shooting from a car, around another car and from the top of a conex. Longest rifle shot is around 300 yards and we're going to stretch a few pistol shots out to around 40 to 50 yards. Lots of heavy things you'll have to move and plenty of mud and water to run through. If you're unfamiliar with RnG, its a little easier to explain via video. This one is from Heartbreak '23, which was Feb 24th & 25th. (Keep in mind, this is a well-established run on a very large property.) I don't have any connection to anybody at the Heartbreak, other than working and competing in it twice now. It's just the most recent one I've ran, and a good one, with an awesome prize table. Parental advisory; there's some language in this: I haven't watched this one yet: Edited March 12, 2023 by Big Shooter
