Building/Assembling a Carry 2011

I need a new carry pistol as I transition away from Glocks.  I have become obsessed with recreating something similar to an STI VIP/Guardian/Tac 4.0 etc, basically a 4"-4.25" double stack in 9mm.  

I have sourced an STI grip and raw frame.  Can I fit this to an already assembled upper?  I found a couple of older STI 1911's for a good value and wanted to know if I ciould swap the uppers.  Could I do the same with any "Commander" upper assembly?  Sorry if the questions are naive, im new to the 1911 platform.

Whether you can swap uppers depends on the dimensions of the slide.

The lower frame will be fit to the slide.

I realize that.  It is possible that the slide ways of the completed upper are too wide for the new frame rails.  If that is the case, you will not be able to use it.   I have older STI 2011 and STI 1911 guns with slides that cannot be fit to new STI frames for that exact reason.  There are also other dimensions that may not work out.

I've wanted to carry my Colt CCO as my EDC, but with all the lint that collects in my Glock... I'm hesitant to do it.
