wyliearms
I'm looking to install a C-more on a Springfield Ranger Officer. After inspection, the frame looks too thin to drill and tap. A search of Google shows another guy on the AR15 forum that had the same issue. Is this problem common on 1911s?
BeerBaron
If it's a steel frame it doesn't have to be mega thick. The load is spread over 5 screws in the cmore + 2 pattern. As long as you get a couple of threads it should work. 2011 frames are thicker in this area of the frame/dustccover but plenty of Springfield 1911s have been drilled for an optic. Ideally you want this done by a smith on a mill. It's critical that the holes are very close to parallel with the bore of the barrel. Otherwise you can find when the optic is mounted it doesn't have enough elevation adjudtment to compensate for holes drilled off axis. You can of course diy it with a drill press but double check those measurements before you drill!
Front Man
Do it on a mill.
Foxbat
Do it on a mill. Absolutely! Also, the steel is quite hard, so go easy with the tap, don't want to break it. Plenty of tapping fluid and very slow going.
