matts2k
I have an STI Eagle 5.0 bushing barrel in 9MM. <2000 rounds through the pistol. The gun has worked flawlessly...until recently. Now, each time the gun cycles, the unfired round's nose gets pushed up too far vertically, and the gun jams with the unfired round pointed up vertically and not in the chamber. Happens on every round. Rack the slide to eject the failed round, and the next round feeds into the chamber appropriately. Fire that round, and the next round jams vertically. Pistol issue? Mag issue? Halp. Thanks! Matt
bountyhunter
My first guess was magazine as in feed lip spacing too wide. If you hand cycle the ammo by fast racking the slide can you reproduce the jam? Have you checked extractor tip and tension? hunt_fish
Agree mag issue. Check the feed lip dimensions, and that they are slightly tapered out. Make them more parallel if you need to get the bullet nose down more Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Steve in Allentown PA
If tweaking the feed lips doesn't cure the problem, try replacing the magazine spring with a new and/or stronger one. You can also try a lighter recoil spring. It sounds like what you're describing is a live-round, vertical stovepipe malfunction. This is most often traced to a mismatch between the forward speed of the slide and how quickly the magazine spring can get the next round pushed up against the feed lips. What's happening is the slide is coming forward faster than the magazine can get the next round into position to be stripped. The slide then contacts the cartridge forward of the rim and pushes it out of the magazine. At this point the cartridge goes vertical and everything stops. So, the objective is to make sure the next round is in the correct position to be stripped before the slide gets to it. A stonger magazine spring will push the rounds up sooner and a lighter recoil spring will slow down the forward movement of the slide thus giving the magazine spring more time to do its thing. Hi-Power Jack
Easiest first step: replace the mag springs. Does this happen with all your mags, or just one?
matts2k
Update: Switching mags fixed the issue! Will now try to find what's the problem with the mag. Thanks for the tips!
