Cylinder slid past stop?

Last night I was cleaning one of my beloved J-Frames and while running a boresnake through the cylinder, the cylinder escaped its stop and moved to the rear toward the grip. There is no significant play in it side to side, or front to back when closed. I put it back, and it is impacting the stop exactly like the others I have. It is not coming back out on its own, or with slight pressure. Is it safe? Has anyone ever seen this?

Sounds like the little stop pin is a tad short ? I read somewhere that this was an

issue on earlier smiths, back when quality was so-so (no comments on it now please, not enough band-width)

It can be replaced and on a defensive gun I would think it should be.

You say no play side to side play, but what about the yoke in the frame ??

A few thousandsth start to add up quickly.

How big a chamfer on the back of the cylinder, too large and it acts like a ramp !

Good luck, if you bet your life on it get it back to smith, and when it comes back

go to the range.
