R.Elliott
It's R&D season now and I have been largely dissatisfied with the loads I have been running the last year. Most current loads and (intermittently) available powders tend to favor guns with barrel ports, which I do not have. Accordingly, does anyone have any experience with Hodegdon Lil' Gun in .38 Super(comp)? Bedell 7 chamber comp, no ports, 5.5" bbl. My experience so far: Monstrously loud, concussive indoors, obnoxious, fire breathing dragon, but flat and fast as hell at 171 pf. Yes, I know I blew the draw. This should work now: https://www.dropbox.com/s/555rlcjni38l1pe/2014-11-09%2015.16.16.mp4?dl=0 What am I missing here....? Thanks loads Rob Edited November 12, 2014 by R.Elliott
kneelingatlas
I can't see the video. What do you mean by "what am I missing?" Are you asking why LG isn't more popular?

Sorry, don't know how to embed the video. Yes, why isn't it more popular?
kneelingatlas
I thought about using it once, but the reviews here didn't look too good, but they were pretty old, maybe something has changed. What's you load/bullet? http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39472 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=24147 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=836 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=86329
R.Elliott
Yeah, info has been sparse. Basic load info so far: 13.6 gr. LG X 124 grain Aim Projectiles hard cast plated (local Canadian made) @ 1.235" coal. CCI small rifle magnum primer. This was based off of existing published Hodgedon load data. 1360 to 1390 fps so no issues making major. Spoke to a rep at Hodgedon and he suggested a standard primer because it's a low pressure load, though very high volume. The magnum rifle primer seems to give better ignition and about 30 fps higher velocities than standard magnum pistol primers. Also tested with small rifle, small pistol magnum and small pistol. Velocities adjust up or down depending on primer, though major is no problem either way.
kneelingatlas
Very cool info, I think most of what has been written is based on supposition rather than hard data; I might just grab some to play with
R.Elliott
If you do, please let me know how it works for you. Fair warning: it's like, 9X25 loud.
kneelingatlas
I'm an incessant tinkerer I have some SP3 inbound, if it will make major, I think it will take ~13gr
R.Elliott
Hmm, where are you getting SP3? There is absolutely nothing available around here right now, LG accepted.
kneelingatlas
I got luck and a friend picked some up for me from a private seller on a forum Vectan powder is no longer imported and I like my SP2 so much I figured I would give it a shot
R.Elliott
Yeah, that's why I was asking. I used to shoot SP2 until the well ran dry. Nice stuff.
kneelingatlas
I tried it, fell in love, a private seller posted some for sale here at a hefty price tag, while everyone else was busy calling him names I made a deal for everything he had (17lbs!). When all was said and done it was cheaper than VV
R.Elliott
Heh, even gold is cheaper than VV!
Aircooled6racer
Hello: The 410 shotgun guys are going to hate you for using there precious powder for your fire breathing monster. You may want to try to find some Alliant Blue Dot also. Thanks, Eric
R.Elliott
I'll have a look at it, thanks. Video works now.
kneelingatlas
Thanks for the video Rob, that looks awesome! I dig the sparks So can you keep track of the dot? I have one gun/load my friend said is flat as a board, but the dot seems to explode then re appear right in the center of the glass
R.Elliott
Well that's the thing; the dot is just there when I want it to be. It does lift a little, but it returns instantly with no dive or oscillation, ready to fire the instant I have the gun reset. I've been playing with springs a little as well and the spring in that video still wasn't dialed in. Shot it last night with what I think will be the final setup and it was even faster to return. So far I'm really liking it, which is why I have to ask, what am I missing? No way am I ever that lucky.... The loads I've been working with up til now I am convinced are probably best in guns that have ported barrels, as they reach their peak volume earlier.
