New to open gun

I bought a Caspian 38 super comp and I have a question about primers, I did some searching and I didn't see any info. I loaded the last of my brass with small rifle primers, but I am wondering if I could use small magnum pistol primers? If so would I need to change the amount of powder.

No. The biggest difference in the various primers is generally the cup hardness. Typically the SM will be marginally softer than SR primers but not by a whole lot. You will be fine. Some Open guys use SPP and some use SRP. Regular small pistol primers can allow primer flow and flatten severely in some Open loads. I say load them up and shoot them!

Some also find that SRP's are a little too hard and result in poor sealing. I'm not sure what changed, if anything, but about 7 years ago I started having breach erosion with Winchester SRP. That may have been the time I finally stopped loading for 180 PF and started loading for 170 PF.

Changed to SPP and no further problems.

Change of powder amount is probably not necessary just check with your chrony but as others have stated depending on your powder choice you may get excessive pressure signs when switching to SPP.

Different primers are not going to affect PF enough to worry about. Your not going to load to exactly 165 anyway. Powder has the greatest affect on PF. Most USPSA open shooters use SRP. I have used SRP for 6 years and 99% we're WInchester.
