ong45
My breechface is looking a bit uneven and i am wondering how to polish it out so it's shiny and smooth. How to do it evenly is my main question. Also how much material can you take off? James
Nate
I have no idea, but the terms "home gunsmith and breachface" in the same sentence give me a bad feeling. Does it affect the function on your gun? Nate
waktasz
Don't take any material off, there are tight tolerances involved back thar. Polish it up with some flitz or simichrome and if it's still uneven I'd have a smith look at it.
Bob Hostetter
You didn't say what kind of gun it was so I will assume its a 1911........ An uneven breechface can cause feeding problems if there is something that can catch on the case rim as it slides up under the extractor. In the proces of building complete guns we always polish out the breechface. If you are doing it a gun that already has a barrel fit to it you need to be careful about removing material, especially at the top where the barrel hood fits into teh slide. The best thing to use is a fine or very fine stone that is narrow enough to slide thru the hood cut in the breechface. For someone just learning the trade focus on smoothing out the bump instead of trying to get rid of them. Less is alway better then more when it come to removing metal...............
