Jacksonj
Hi Folks; I did a search and read over several threads. I did find one suggestion of 3.5 grains of American Select for the 147 gr lead bullet. I actually found some of powder available. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been using Alliant Unique 3.9 grs for my Lone Wolf barreled Glocks 19 and 17. I really like the recoil impulse generated with this load. But alas, my Unique stock is down to about 2 pounds. In my search here and over the interweb I've found folks discussing American Select for 9mm for several years. I've just never considered it. But as the shortage of powder and primers shows no signs of abating, I guess it's time start considering it. Do any of you have much experience with it? Any load suggestions and experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
kar45
I had 3 or so lbs of AmSelect left over from my old trapshooting days...put 3.8 grains behind a Bayou 135 resulting in the worst smoke cloud I have ever seen. Maybe it won't smoke so bad with jacketed or lead. I gave it to a friend who is still shooting clay birds
Service Desk
I found that Alliant Clay Dot was the most useful for light bullets on steel and that Universal was the best all- round 9mm powder for the price.
Jacksonj
Thanks folks. As best I can tell from my continued searching is a decent starting point is about 3.5 grains. I have some coming from Wideners the 1st of the week, so I'll work up some loads and see how it goes. Any input is always appreciated. http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=1264&dir=278|283|
colbyjack
What's your OAL on that load? 147 lead and american select. 3.5 start to what 3.9 or so??? I can't find data in my books either.
Jacksonj
OAL is 1.130" for the lead flat points I'm using. The feed in my Lone Wolf barrels reliably. I actually just received an e-mail from Ben Amonette at Alliant. His reply: "With American Select and a 147 gr lead bullet, I suggest starting with 2.9 grs and the max should be approx. 3.3 grs. " It's not a lot of wiggle room...but something to start working with. Any other experience or thoughts are welcomed. TIA
Jacksonj
Just a little feedback. I found a load for my Glock's (17 &19) using AmSel. I haven't chronoed it, but fired about 500 rounds so far. They are clean, reliable, accurate, and exhibit so signs of overpressure. 147 gr LFP 9mm form BSL. OAL 1.130" Federal Small Pistol Primers 3.4 gr AmSel The AmSel is similar in shape (small flake) to Unique (my go-to powder for many, many years) and meters extremely well through my Dillon. The AmSel is also markedly less smoky than Unique. I hope someone may find this useful. When I can get over to my Buddy's and chrono these, I'll add the info.
