Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. There's been some good suggestions and I've learned of different tools that should make these Norma cases a nonissue for certain. I admit to being a bit spoiled..maybe somewhat lazy. But I'm not complaining. Heck, this is free brass! I don't deprime 9mm as a separate stage, just feed into my 30 year old 550 as I run 1 k batches of 9mm practice ammo. I have 3K of 147 HiTek bullets inbound as I type this. I load a good bit of .38 spl through a single stage Lee press with RCBS dies. I just deprimed and straightened 1300 .38 cases this week so far. I'll prime and bell them next week. I'll just adapt to sorting my 9mm cases. So I wasn't complaining, just "Expressing concern in a meaningful fashion" aka "Bit**in" LOL. Thanks for the suggestions and great info.
  2. ^ For now this is me ^ I don't have a universal decapper (probably should consider it) and the overwhelming majority of the 9mm I run through my old 550 are simply practice rounds. Out of the last 3000 or so pieces of brass I've sorted recently there was less than 100 pieces of Norma. But since I use range pickup brass and Norma seems to selling a lot to folks these past few months I guess I can anticipate that number to increase. I've been fortunate the past few decades to not have to sort my 9mm brass...or maybe lucky... <sigh>
  3. I thought that I had a maladjusted die decapping issue after my decapping pin stuck... twice! You'd have thought I would have figured it out after the first time. My RCBS decapping pin is apparently just slightly larger than the Norma flash hole. I've never sorted my 9mm range brass by headstamp... I do now <sigh>.
  4. And back to powder location and availability: Midsouth Shooters currently has HP-38, AA#5, Unique, and Titegroup...for now anyway. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/Dept/reloading/smokeless-powder
  5. Strange I know. They were .38 cal bullets with a flat point resized to .357 and shorten to run through a Lonewolf barrel in my G19. We ultimately ran more than 10K of them through several G19's with OEM barrels with no problems, no overt pressure signs, and good accuracy. We have gone to a RN profile for 9mm and different powder...Unique. I would not recommend anyone do what I do...only offering the info for the purposes of extrapolation and load development. But good call on the OAL.
  6. You are welcome Wayne. Well I learned something about TG and Precision bullets from Sarge. Here's a few loads we use in our 130 gr dropped bullets: (124 gr mold) 9mm 130 + gr PC bullet TSPP OAL 1.025” Winchester 231 (Win 231) 4.0 gr Avg Vel 1050 9mm 130 + gr PC bullet TSPP OAL 1.025” Accurate Arms #2 (AA#2) 3.8 gr Avg Vel 985fps 130 gr PC RN Unique 3.5 gr WSSP OAL 1.095” Avg Vel: 1042 PF: 135 9mm 147 Gr Lead FP (Falcon) Lovex – Clean Shot- DO32 OAL 1.130” Tula Small Pistol Primers Lone Wolf barrel G 19 3.1gr = 906 fps Factory OEM G 19 barrel 3.1gr = 870 fps I know this data I listed is not specific for all the powders you listed, nor specifically for Precision bullets, but I hope it may prove useful with a bit of extrapolation. "Buyer beware"... I haven't seen any Bulleyes around in a long time now, but with the shortage of components the past few years we've learned to use powders I had never considered in the past. Thank God for chronographs and the info I've gleaned here. Good shooting to you Wayne.
  7. Powder coating has made a believer out of me. The process is ridiculously simple as well...otherwise I would struggle with it... As a drift, we've even cast and powder coated a few 7.62x39 rounds and run them around 2200 fps out of AK. I did gas check them as they are still experimental for me...but no problems with leading nor accuracy.
  8. Greetings Mr. Dobbs. While I have no experience with the Precision bullets, I/we do cast and powder coat 9mm bullets in both 130 gr weight and 147 (our drop at 155 gr). The powder coating process we use is baked and incredibly durable...you can smash the bullet with a hammer and the coating adheres. From Precision's website the process looks to be along the same lines. We have only just begun casting the 147's, yesterday as a matter of fact. So my load production will take some time on that particular weight. I have run our 130 gr 9mm rounds up to 1350 fps using Hodgdon's HS-6 powder and experienced no leading nor fouling issues in factory Glock barrels (G 17 in this case). I mention this as I treat our powder coated bullets as if they were jacketed rounds...other folks may have different opinions...but this works for us. We ran through 14K of them last year, loaded to 970 fps, with no problems whatsoever. (using Alliant Unique powder) Since you are looking for load suggestions I would ask what powders you have available? Also to what purpose do you plan to put the rounds to? Practice, training ammo? Competition? As Wayne Dobbs in Allen, TX I make the bold assumption you are part of Hardwire Tactical...none of my business of course LOL...but Hardwire Tactical has a great rep in the training community!
  9. I too was concerned and e-mail Hodgdon. Glad it was merely a rumor. And I appreciate the timely response. "I have heard nothing that would make me believe we are on the verge of losing W231/HP-38, but I do think that availability will continue to be an issue. I can assure you W231/ HP-38 will continue to be in the Hodgdon / Winchester product lines. Mike Daly was mistaken." 10. Thank you...load data experience is kinda scarce at this point. I'm interested in trying this powder. From what I read it seems, at least on the surface, to be similar to Unique. Am I off the mark on that assumption?
  11. I apologize. I worded that poorly. We use a .38 cal bullet mold at .358, powder coat and then resize to .357. We tried various 9mm molds and various sizing dies and finally gave this one a try. We were having stability issues at greater velocities with coated bullets sized at .356, through OEM Glock barrels and Lone Wolf barrels. The coated and sized .357 bullets gave us excellent stability even up to 1350 fps. We didn't have pressure signs at that speed, but obviously backed way down to 1050. Saves money and meets our perceived needs. The lead we are using is recovered range lead and very soft. But we have had no issues with shedding coating/leading and really like the soft recoiling and flat shooting round. Again, my apologies for the lack of clarity on my post.
  12. We cast and powder coat our own 9mm. We use .358 mold resized to .357 and powdercoat. Our collective Glock barrels slugged at .356 and these 130 gr bullets run great over 4.0 grs Green Dot and Tula Small Pistol primers. We average 1050 fps and the rounds are more accurate than we are. But we are fast using up that 8 lb container of Green Dot. I'll be glad when it's easier to find...
  13. nyyrus You wouldn't happen to shoot out at ORSA would ya? Looking forward to your report.
  14. You're welcome nyyrus. I've been a fan of Unique for many years. But we were "gifted" the Green Dot, 8 lbs as well LOL. We fine it burns more thoroughly and has a very nice recoil impulse...subjective I know, but nice nonetheless. Please keep us posted on your perceptions and load development.
  15. We (shooting & casting group) cast and powder coat our own 9mm rounds. They drop right at 130 gr. We've run through at least 5000 rounds of them so far this year using 4.0 gr Green Dot. We get right at 1050fps out of 4 different Glock 19's with OEM barrels. I've worked up loads using Unique, AmSel, AA#2, & W231...Green Dot is a hand's down favorite of ours.
