Dillon 650 leaving a "mini shoulder" on the neck. .223 resize

Recommended Posts

I'm getting my old 650 setup again, it's been a few years since I've used it.

I have a .223 carbide resize die in station 1, adjusted all the way down to the shell plate. The expander ball/decap pin is not installed. When I run a piece through the press, it comes out with a "mini shoulder" immediatly above the shoulder, on the neck.

I don't think it's normal, but I don't know what's wrong. You can see it in the pic. It doesn't look like much, but you can sure feel it.

Looks like it is compressing the neck... adjusted too deep? I had a couple of those for my '06 when I first adjusted the dies, and learned that I had to start more shallow and work down to the final adjustment.

Otherwise, did you check the case length before you started sizing? Could also be due to a stretched case?

The brass is once fired LC military surplus, and it's all about 1.765 give or take a couple .001's

I was trying to push the shoulder down so that it would fit perfectly in the dillon case guage. As it is right now, the base sticks up just a little too high in the guage (before sizing). It's not in between the high and the low marks.

Make sure the sizing die is all the way down for LC fired brass. I believe you have about 1/4 turn available until you just touch the shell plate with a case in the sizing die. ALso check case length with micrometer to ensure that it is not already too long overall. Not just the shoulder.

screw the die down more and try again. If it fits in a case guage call it good. If you are loading on a Dillion then the dies have to compress that spring and ball thing and it can give you the impression that your die is down far enough. If a sized clean case will drop into your chamber, give it a tap and then turn the gun upside down. If the case falls out your also good to go.

I just had this exact issue and had to bring the die down a little bit more until the "bulge" was gone. I too would reccomend putting the expander ball back in there. My brass is pre-primed so I had to remove the pin that punches out the primer.
