tatu_ph
Good Day! I would like to ask, what are the signs of early unlocking in 1911s? When the spent shells get burnt marks (About a third to half of the length of the case), is my gun unlocking early? Also I noticed lots of powder residue on my forearm, kinda like cracked black pepper. I don't see any skid marks on my primer though. It's a Colt gov 45acp, shooting 200grn 175PF ammo, I use 23lbs MS and 13lbs RS shooting ammo. Thanks!
tatu_ph
One last thing my shells also don't bulge up. I'm just concerned about the shells getting burned.
BlueOvalBruin
What powder are you using? A slow powder might cause this.
GSWEAR
I'm going to guess ammo, I can't imagine it's unlocking early with a #23 mainspring. Greg
tatu_ph
I'm using 4.0 vihtavuori n310. Is this (Shells getting burned)any indication of a problem? Will putting an EGW Flat FPS help?
BlueOvalBruin
I get burned shells more often with 45 than other calibers since it's a lower pressure round. I have no experience with that powder though, although it looks like a pretty fast powder so my uninformed opinion is surprised to see a low pressure condition like this. Hi-Power Jack
the spent shells get burnt marks (About a third to half of the length of the case), Is the burnt mark on one side of the cartridge case, or all around? I get burnt marks on one side from factory Remington 9mm 115 grain green box ammo - doesn't seem to be a problem??? Jack
want2race
Chamber dimensions most likely. As soon as the bullet leaves the case the gas looks to go where ever it can, that includes any space between the case and chamber wall. My cases have the same coloration as you describe and mine runs like a clock (Clock not glock). The flat FPS is just a blank that is to be fitted and shaped when installed. It's not meant to be used with a square bottom.
