Another Open Shotgun Question

I'm thinging of getting into 3 gun matches. I currently shot open pistol and rifle, but have a limited shotgun (Rem 1187). I'd like to shoot in the open class but can't affort a new shotgun right now. Can I still be competitive if I add a B-Square and a red dot to my shotgun? I see JP adds a recoil eliminator and ports their barrels. Do these features make a huge difference? Will only having 8+1 compared to having 10+1 be a great disadvantage?

ERIC,

you need a couple of things:

1. the speed loader. the b-square will not let you have the speed loader.

2. the speed loader will let you be competitive even with the 8+1 setup, but i'd get the 10+1 tube for the shotgun.

3. if you want a scope, have a gunsmith drill and tap for a scope mount.

Better yet get the JPoint mount low on the barrel for the jpoint sight or similar.

Its very good, no problem with barrel to reciever fit etc for sight alignment.

Do a search for this topic you will find loads of info.

Here are some economic mods that you can do:

1 - Get the 10+1 tube. In shotgun, you can't miss, so extra helpers are great!

2 - Get Tec-Loaders. Shotgun is about who can load the fastest.

3 - Get your barrel threaded for chokes and pick up a set of good chokes (Briley).

4 - Get a JPoint. Have JP, cut your rib and mount the dot on the barrel.

5 - Barrel porting. While it's great to have, it's fairly low on the priority list.

During all these steps, test out your gun for a given shot size, and distance to steel for impact. Too, test out what slugs work well in your gun. There is a ton of information to learn with regards to shotgun ammo, so the sooner the better.

And, as mentioned, search the site for more info.

I have to agree with bigdog.

I just got my Remington completely done. Here is what I did.

JP Recoil reducer. redrilled gas ports and installed activator and barrel ported

Cut rib and installed Optima with JP base

Arredondo Tec loader ramp (trimmed)

I just yank off barrel and put on spare barrel I picked up off ebay and pull two pins for the ramp and I got a limited shotgun too.

Sweet setup for when my Benelli is acting bad
