Samuel Brown, MD 1769-1830

Recommended Posts

I took a walk downtown with my 10 year old to work on a project for school about Kentucky history.

She had to answer questions, the answers to which are located on historical signs near old buildings. One in particular caught my eye. It seems that Dr Samuel Brown, the first professor of chemistry, anatomy, and surgery at Transylvania University not only helped develop the smallpox vaccine, but also:

1) applied steam distillation to the manufacture of whiskey

AND

2) did analyses that led to the use of Kentucky cave nitre to manufacture gunpowder! :surprise:

So I'm starting a movement to name him the unofficial father of Kentucky USPSA for his advances in Bourbon and Gunpowder!

Amazing what you learn on a Sunday!

As a fellow Kentuckian I second your motion.

I third it! I'll have to check that out next time I'm in Versailles.
