I'd say it's all what you get used to. I run mine with in L10 and haven't had any issues. I agree that it is harder to depress but I haven't had any issues with mags dropping free and really haven't had to think about it too much unless I switch and run production for a match or two. I can tell the difference at thwat point, but if I'm cosistent with it in dry fire and match use, then it doesn't bother me at all.

Running the gun as a right hander, I don't find the release any harder to depress than the regular, short releases on the 9/40 frames. Hitting the right side release with my index finger is likewise easy.

Running the gun in my left hand, I'm having some trouble -- but I can't remember the last time I tried to actuate a mag release while a gun was in my left hand -- may it was while shooting an H&K USP about ten years ago....
