Instruction for my teenage daughter

To my great delight, my teenage daughter wants to shoot USPSA with me. I have a lot of competitive experience with shotguns (skeet and sporting clays), but am a relative newcomer to this game. I would like to get some quality instruction for us. I live in Maine, so I understand I will have to travel. I would appreciate feedback about instructors who may work for both of us. By the way, she is testing for her 3rd degree black belt, so she is familiar with taking and applying instruction.

Thanks for your feedback.

Rick, welcome to you and your daughter. Quality instruction may not be too far away. Check with your local gun shops. Since you know about USPSA you might try finding instruction at the club/s you shoot at. Also try IDPA.com for local clubs. I know it's not USPSA but they might have/know of quality instruction.

Good luck and stay safe,

Richard

I know that there are 2 clubs in Maine that run USPSA matches. One near Augusta, one near Hampden. I think they run new shooter course each year.

The Hopkinton club in Ma. runs an intro to USPSA each year also. Their's is in March.

What part of Maine are you located in?

The only place is a USPSA match. You would get misinformation from a gun store/gun show(I go to one maybe once a year, most "teach" dogmatic silly stuff like weaver stance and Revo doctrine), I can't spend more than one day a year a public range either.

IDPA(its a similar but different sport) What division? That determines a lot.

I would sign her up for Junior camp no matter what.

I don't know if Julie G teaches but she is kinda close to ya and is a very nice person. Bruce P is up there but I don't think he teaches. Ok maybe move? :surprise:

Being a M/GM doesn't mean you can teach but I have had a a few people approach me at local matches and ask for help. Some are now pretty good M's so ask around at your club matches. They got free weekly coaching by riding to and shooting matches.

You are so right to start with good foundation and fundamentals cause unlearning bad habits can take ten times the effort.

Ahhh... your daughter is in a position to take advantage of the very best and most comprehensive sponsorship program available to shooters... The Parents.

Please let her know that she should milk that for every nickel. :)

Not really sure what you are looking for? Intro. classes. Something a bit more in depth?

If you want to take off to Florida, I think this weekend is the Florida Open match (Major USPSA match). It is hosted at Frank Garcia's Universal Shooting Academy (south of Orlando). Manny Bragg instructs there. He is a member here and also has an account in our dealer forum. I believe there is a class associated with the match. That is pretty short notice, but if you had some miles built up and wanted to get out of the snow, it would be a good match to watch, at least.

The following weekend, in Springfield Mass., there is the S&W Indoor/Winter Nationals (and IDPA match). A lot of top shooters will be there as well. (Many of the top IDPA shooter are also the top USPSA shooters. ;) ) As an indoor match, they have to limit spectators. But, I just read that they make an exceptions for Juniors who's parents are not shooting.

You might drop a note to Julie Golob. She is with S&W. She is a ladies champ and a great ambassador for our sport. http://www.juliegolob.com/

In the mean time, our host here has some excellent resources in his store. http://www.brianenos...store/home.html

Along with his book, Brian has Steve Anderson's dry-fire book. Dry-fire is a fantastic skills builder during the winter months, especially. (might be hard for a newbie to find the proper motivation) There are also some very good DVD's that Brian has...Matt Burkett's come to mind.

Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. I didn't mean to look for instruction at GS but maybe the name/s of local certified instructors that you could discuss the situation with before making any decision.
