  1. Applications for the June 30-July 1 2018 Nightforce Precision Tactical 2-Rifle match are up at:

    http://johnson3gun.webs.com/2-rifle-june-30-july-1-2018

There will be 10 stages and you will need to use BOTH an AR-15 and  Precision Rifle (.223 to 30 caliber) on each stage.

This year there is a 3000 fps speed limit on both rifles.

This match has about 2 miles of walking each day...you carry all your stuff...but you can use multiple optics, binoculars, bags, bipods, tripods, stick, range finders, whatever as long as you can carry it!

Check out: https://rm3gun.smugmug.com/Nightforce-PrecisionTactical-2017/  for pictures from the 2017 match.

  2. Well, we are filled up with a number on the waitlist, but I am hoping to get some more people entered after SHOT SHOW. So feel free to send in your applications!

We want to thank ALL these amazing sponsors for signing up early!

For all you RM3G veterans, your feedback on these tentative travel plans is welcomed-

Fly into Denver, rent a car, shoot the match, drive car South to Albuquerque, fly home from ALB.

It looks like 3 hours from Raton to either airport, I figure at least this way I get to see more of the country.

    Good plan?  Bad plan?

It's  a bit longer from DIA as traffic is yucky!

Not much but city to see on most of that route.

There are some great things to stop at in New Mexico...Sante Fe, Albuquerque and even Raton...we have a volcano and Sugarite and not far away, lots of other things!!

    :-)

We look forward to seeing you!

  4. Johnson 3-Gun Schedule: 2018 at the NRA Whittington Center

    March 17, 2018 - 3-Gun match

    Newbie Briefing 0830

    Shooter's Briefing 0900

    March 18, 2018 - 2-Rifle Match (Coal Canyon - Hwy 555 MM5)

    Shooter's Briefing 0800

April 14, 2017 RO Clinic followed by match on April 15 (come both or just Sunday)

Saturday will be our 4th annual RO clinic. This clinic is a good refresher for anyone wanting to serve as a 3-Gun RO, but it focuses on Natural Terrain matches. We will be working under RM3G rules as well as 2-Rifle match rules, but it covers many of the RO skills talked about on the forums. There will be a little bit of shooting on Saturday and then a full Johnson 3-Gun match on Sunday.

On Saturday, we will cover scoping out a stage (as an RO), looking for RO traps, dealing with the natural terrain for 180 and safety as well as RO repairs and supplies, RO equipment and preparedness. Since RO's at a natural terrain match implies more responsibility, we will spend some time looking at that as well. Since 3-Gun is growing so quickly, we will also be looking at strategies to work with shooters that are new to this type of match. The Sunday match will be open to everyone and you can just come on out to shoot!

    He-Man Nationals May 19-20, 2018 - Applications posted at: http://heman3gun.webs.com/

    Nightforce P/T 2-rifle match June 30-July 1, 2018 - Applications up mid-January

Rocky Mountain 3-Gun World Championship August 9-12, 2018 - Applications posted at: http://rm3g.com/ and http://rm3gworld.webs.com/

FEES for "local/club" matches: In general, matches are $40 for a one day match, $60 if you come to both days on a 2 day weekend!

  5. So the plan is:

In a week, December 17, the applications for this match will be posted at: http://rm3g.com/  and http://rm3gworld.webs.com/ .

    Yep, we're still snail mail.

If you have attended at least 2 JP RM3G's, when I get your application, I will enter you into the match and send a confirmation. If this is your first or second, I will put you on a waitlist until Jan 8, 2018.

I will record both postmark and arrival date. We usually get a good group of newbies in on that date, but you should get them postmarked on Dec 18 if possible.

If you don't have checks, you can have your bank send one, or we can arrange a call to pay by credit card, but you won't get the cash/check discount so it will be $15 more.

We did have to raise the price to $325 this year for cash/check to meet costs.

If you are a sponsored shooter, send in the application with your sponsor listed so I can be sure we get you in and still have room.

    Thanks everyone!

    Denise

  6. Just got back from big Thanksgiving Trip.

Applications for the May 19-20, 2018 He-Man 3-Gun National Championship are posted at http://heman3gun.webs.com/

Usually, not a terrible rush. We did have to raise the price to $225. Some rising costs are getting us. But, we plan to make it a LOT of fun!

LOTS of sponsors already signed on: Bruno's, Burris, Carbon Arms, Crossbreed Holsters, Enchanted Grounds, Ergo, Firebird Precision/Hidden Valley Sporting Goods, Hexmag, Hodgdon Powders,JP Enterprises, Phoenix Weaponry, Redding Reloading, Safariland, Seekins Precision, Sierra Bullets, Truckvault, Warne Scope Mounts and XS Sights!! We are so lucky!

Also, I don't know how to make a pdf fillable, so you still have to print and mail... I know...old school...

You may charge it, just let me know and you can call and charge over the phone.

    See you in May!:D

  7. Match Director here...my situation is different than most...no restaurants, very little sight seeing...takes over 20 minutes sometimes to get from one stage to another, just driving.

BUT - even for berm matches where you just move next door...I TOO, feel rushed...no time to breath, take my gear off and go to the bathroom...it's a production for girls...no time to drink some water or have a snack without neglecting resetting or not being prepared to shoot. Last shooter on a stage is completely brain dead as they are always running up for the shooter's briefing on the next stage and can't really hear. If your gun has issues, no time to go fix it or find parts without neglecting resetting or running around like a chicken with your head cut off. I like to talk to the squad ahead of me as they shoot and as they are packing up to move on...they can do it in a leisurely fashion on a one on- one off schedule, so I can ask them questions AFTER they are done shooting, so I'm not screwing with their train of thought.

Also, for scheduling purposes...going straight from one stage to another means that if one stage gets behind, ALL the stages are behind because that squad can't get to their next stage in time...in one on, one off, they may not have time to chat if they come off a backed up stage, but the next stage won't start late...unless they're backed up as well.

If you only shoot 5 minutes at a major match, you need to try some different matches...fastest times on our stages are over a minute...often over 100 seconds...you get plenty of shooting. In a stage 100 yards long, having time to watch, help reset, can give you a better idea of where all the targets are so you know the stages better and see what rocks to avoid.

I do think people act more relaxed on one on - one off...but I also understand that some people are trying to vacation and want to drink earlier or what have you.

We can't shoot them in a row at Rocky Mountain...shooters can't even get to the stages. At He-Man, we have a smaller match...7 stages, 7 squads, they shoot straight through, but the schedule gives them 90 minutes to shoot and 30 minutes to get to the next stage which can be over 10 miles away...They only shoot 4 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday...they break for a lunch and we have a big shoot-off on Saturday afternoon...but that match is mellow anyway. Everyone seems to be in a good mood even if it's raining, snowing and fogging!

It kind of depends on what you what from your matches...I go to be with 3-gunners...who I think are cool...shoot and have fun. I HATE being afternoon squad on half day format the first day...I have shot in the dark EVERY time!

As far as food service...they do like it better if people are kind of captured...at RM3G, they are anyway...not that many places to eat in Raton...a few good ones that sponsor us, but you know what I mean.

I see no difference in parking...same number of squads show up...the one shooting, the next one and maybe the next if they're running fast...but we park (and sometimes walk a ways) at each stage. If it was berms...still have the same number of squads near the stages... However, as a shooter, I hate being afternoon squad at berm matches because there is no where to park when you arrive as the morning squads haven't finished when you get there, so there is no place to go...then you have to move your car after everyone leaves and then you are rushing again.

    Anyway to each his own!

  8. June 30-July 1, 2018 will be the third Nightforce Precision/Tactical 2-Rifle match

On each stage the shooter will use BOTH their precision rifle (.223 to 30 caliber - speed limit 3000 fps) AND an AR-15 (same speed limit).

We score by points. 20 points available on each of 10 stages.

For your precision rifle - there will be 5 targets on each stage. If you hit the target on the first attempt, you get 2 points...2nd attempt 1 point. Then stop shooting! Precision targets are usually steel from about 200-1000 yards...but this year we had a tiddly wink at 30 yards! :-)

For your AR-15 - there will be 10 targets on each stage worth 1 point each. They may be steel out to 400 yards or a stationary clay bird...or...who knows, or paper. Each target is worth one point...paper is scores best 2, 1/2 point for A or B, 1/4 point for C zone...zero points for D zone.

Applications will be out in January. I will post here and on our Facebook Page: http://johnson3gun.webs.com/  under the P/T tab.

  9. He-Man 3-Gun Nationals will be held May 19-20, 2018 at the beautiful NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM.

Applications will be posted in November.

    We have:

He-Man Iron - .308 (irons or red dot), pump 12 gauge, .45 pistol

He-Man Scope - ,308 (1 piece of glass - it would be magnified), pump 12 gauge, .45 pistol

and for staff, and travel partners of He-men with Match Director's consent...

wee-man - anything NOT He-Man...however, there will probably be snickering, pink things and other wee-manny type comments  :roflol:

Join the fun! He-Man Shoot-Off on Saturday May 19 - always fun to shoot AND watch!

In USPSA if you ditch a loaded gun and it isn't on safe it is 30 seconds or 3 procedurals, not a DQ.

My response was about an outlaw match where the guy said it should be a stage DQ if your abandoned firearm hits the ground.

It doesn't take that much longer to safely dump a gun,  if you spear it into a dump barrel and it bounces out, it should be a DQ imo, match DQ.

    Yep! I agree!

  15. Sent this out by email today!

    Hope I got everyone!

JP Rocky Mountain 3-Gun is just 2 weeks away.

Wanted to send you some reminders.

•Registration is Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the Coors cabin from noon to 1700.

Late registration will be Thursday, August 10 at 0615-0645.

•Shooter’s briefing at 0645 at the Coors Event Center on August 10. Every one should be there and no one will be able to walk stages that morning until the briefing is over.

•You may walk through all the stages but stage 6 on Tuesday and Wednesday August 8-9. Just please allow the staff shoot to continue without delay.

•Gunslinger II will be serving breakfast and lunch August 10-13 in the trailer parked at the Coors Center.

There will also be dinner served at Gunslingers II (at shotgun) Thursday and Saturday evenings.

•Thursday night, King of the Mountain is helping to have a swap meet…so bring things to buy/sell/trade…you know, those great prize table items that just aren’t for you! King will be providing some beverages that evening.

•Friday night, will be our Shooter’s BBQ/Junior Benefit to benefit the Junior Adventure Camp at Whittington. [Doorprize tickets are $10] Also, we will be having some setters (hopefully) on the large reset stages who will be working for tips. We will also be collecting for DAV, if anyone wants to donate. So bring some extra money! J

    •Target Count for JP RM3G 2017

Stage 1 – 3-Gun - Limited Round Stage – 2-10 round pistol magazines, 1- 20 round rifle magazine, 11 rounds of shotgun (We got such rave reviews from our Trailer Stage at He-Man that we’re bringing it back with a few changes. This may be the last time we get to use this area.)

    Stage 2 – 3-Gun – 10 rifle steel, 2 slugs, 10 birdshot, 2 pistol paper and 10 pistol steel.

Stage 3 – Shotgun Birdshot – 42 rounds including swinging, flying, and launched birds.

    Stage 4 – Shotgun/Rifle – 3 slugs, 10 birdshot, 12 rifle paper, 10 rifle steel. Rifle sling required.

Stage 5 – Pistol/Rifle - 10 pistol steel, the Texas Star for pistol, 9 pistol paper, and 24 rifle steel. Rifle sling required.

    Stage 6 – Pistol – 21 steel, 21 paper, 2 clays

    Stage 7 – Rifle – 22 steel, 3 clays, 16 paper

    Stage 8 – 3-Gun – 8 pistol steel, 6 pistol paper, 10 birdshot steel, 2 launched birds, 12 rifle steel

Stage 9 – Shotgun/Pistol – Option stage – 12 clays for birdshot only, 6 paper for pistol only, 24 steel that can be pistol or birdshot.

•If you didn’t send in your waiver yet, please do so…there’s a smarties in it for you!

•Bug spray! Bring it! We’ve had a very wet spring…bugs everywhere.

•Bring sunscreen as well…lots of that…but rain gear…lots of rain, too! It usually gets cool in the night, so bring a pretty complete array of clothes.

•Bring liquids! There should water near all the stages, but to be safe, bring water and snacks. It can be very dehydrating! Staying hydrated does help with altitude sickness.

•This year, you can park pretty close to all the stages. There is one 75 yard walk, but no big hikes in!

•As usual, with the distances at Whittington, you will shoot 3 stages a day, every other time slot, Thursday – Saturday. Sunday will be for the LaRue Junior Shoot-Off 0800, the Brownells Ladies Shoot-Off 0900, and the team shoot-off at 1000. The plan is to start thank-yous, awards and prizes at 1100.
