I just watched a video of Mason Lane shooting CO at a big match in the Caribbean. Noticed there were a lot of low walls or ports to shoot under.

More power on target is the reason for major pf scoring. But along with that comes more recoil.

And Revolver.
It does not make any sense, competitively, to shoot 6-shot Major. But sometimes the madness strikes me and it feels good to have at least one advantage
Oops. Forgot revolver. Since they allowed the eight shots I haven't seen anyone shooting major

I've never shot open. But leave Open, Limited and SS major/minor.

Welcome, from Nor Cal. Have fun!

I've never used them on a 1911 but I love the feel of the Lok palm swell grips on my CZs. I don't have an issue with standard thickness 1911 grips but am curious how palm swells would feel on them. Those bite grips do look interesting if you like the 2011 feel.

I agree but I also think with new shooters they just don't know what they don't know.
Of course. I also didn't know what I didn't know. It wasn't a back breaking effort to pick up the phone and find out what I needed to know. I think it's a little more important to take that step in a sport that involves firearms compared to some other hobbies. But I do understand that we want to help newcomers.

How many shooters here if you were new and inexperienced with both range and match procedures figure it would be a good idea to just show up and take your chances to shoot a match without making any effort to get some information from range or match representatives? That's not how I went about it.

I'm curious on the bullet weights used. I have mostly shot 45s. For 9mm minor it seemed that a lot of shooters liked the softer feel of 147gr bullets. Shooting LO now and I've been using 135gr coated bullets. Thought they were a compromise without going all the way to the 147s. Have they waned in popularity? It seems I see a lot more shooters using the lighter bullets these days.

I don't know what it would be like to be a new shooter starting with optics never having used iron sights. Until last year I'd never used an ootic on a handgun only scopes on a rifle.
I have now been mostly shooting with an optic in LO after 13 years of shooting Limited and SS. For me I certainly did not just start shooting faster or more accurately when I switched to an optic. I'm getting more comfortable with it but it sure hasn't been " this is so much easier then iron sights".

I'll skip the local matches when it's too cold, windy or rainy. I've only had a couple of bigger matches with bad weather. Most of them are held during the better weather months. I've never been to nationals.
I like going to a few level 2 matches a year. Turning 71 next month, I'm retired so work isn't a problem. Also I figure that I'll go because I'm still able to do it and at any time that could change for me. It's a little vacation. I have fun, just a B shooter. I enjoy shooting with new people and see a lot of the regulars there too. I can afford it and my wife is glad I've got a hobby that keeps me busy.

I haven't seen many level2 or above matches where you can wait until stage diagrams are posted, get close enough in time to see the weather report and be able to register and pay for the match if they still have openings. Many sell out very quickly and most of the rest also sell out way before you can get the stages and weather.

I still say if you can't show up to your FIRST match on time at least before the safety briefing and preferably earlier or to sometime before the match contact them for all the relevant info you can get, either skip the match and go to the next one or stay and observe as a non shooter and ask your questions then.
-
If he got there late, as soon as he could after working a shift, again, probably not the best time for your first match. Particularly if you haven't bothered to touch base with someone previously and got as much info as you could about procedures for the match.
-
I can't imagine showing up to my first match, late enough to miss all the information including the safety briefing. I'd wait until next match. Also contact whoever is listed as a club contact and ask questions.

Even though you want to focus on the target you don't want to use a prescription that makes the dot into a starburst.

i have shot some outlaw matches using that scoring and i absolutely hate it.
I haven't actually shot a match with 2 hits anywhere on target scoring the max points. But i just don't like the concept of shooting like that. I knew that a lot of 3 gun scores that way

One buddy still shoots Prod because he has severe astigmatism and says dots look like starbursts. It will be interesting to see how he stage plans with 15. His plans with 10 were sometimes weird.
I had glasses set up with front sight focus in my dominant eye. Looking through a red dot I had the starburts problem. Now I have my shooting glasses set up with my regular distance prescription in both eyes, no more starburst problem.

I’ve always kicked around the idea of a regional championship match that played into the nationals. Each region or area holds a match that is identical down to the measurements etc. then the scores are all added to the national match. Could be ran all on the same weekend and would be very similar to the postal match idea
Clubs have a difficult enough time setting up classifiers with a handfull of targets and some walls as far as shooters getting the same view from the same position shooting the classifier at different clubs. No way you're going to be able to set up dupicate entire stages around the country.

Yes. It's not 2 hits anywhere. 10, 5, 3. The only PCSL match within a few hours of me is just using the standard USPSA targets. No K zone 10 point with one hit. Without that it's just the divisions and power factor that's different.
-
In my area a club held a Production vs SS match for several years. Not sure when they started but it was pretty popular. Eventually they switched it up and now have Open vs PCC and other combos. I'm not sure if attendance dwindling was the reason they changed or what.

not getting into that,, I never saw enough difference, but that has been hashed out ...
Was referng to IVC's comment that LO was to CO as Limited was to production...Ok. Not as big of a difference, but enough to still justify two divisions.

they are both minor scored, slide mounted optic, 140mm mag divisions.. whats the difference ? a hair shorter trigger reset and a mag funnel in a 25 round gun ?
Thats a far cry from the difference between production and limited...Apparently a big enough difference to show with both divisions available CO is the biggest of all divisions and LO is battling it out for 2nd, 3rd with Open and PCC. It may vary by region but that's before LO has even been made permanent.

Doc says one or two years for me for surgery. Vision changed more this year but still correctable. Good luck to you.

I didn't quite watch the whole video but didn't see him go prone. More low ports then I'd like to see. But I turn 71 next month and am portly. I still can squat pretty low unless the port is too low. At level 2s and above I expect to see prone, low ports, maybe a stage with a longer run in it. I don't have a problem going prone if it's the last position. Most Cooper tunnels I've seen weren't too bad. I can still move around but am not fast
