I agree with this.  Rugar may be on to something... no one has ever said a word about mini-14's and now this little guy is out.  It may survive by not getting to much attention.  where is the mag release on this rifle? its not infront of that magazine is it?

Its on either side of the magazine (switchable).

IDPA is where most start. It's humbling when you think you're great at IDPA and then get rocked at a USPSA match.

Hey some of us suck at both, thank you very much!

If you include long sprints, very low ports, and tight tunnels ... people will complain. "Hey! We came here for the shooting, not for an obstacle course. Besides, if I go prone, I need somebody to help me get up."

You joke. But if I go prone, I need someone to help me up. 😋

Each club is different and tends to do different things. Major matches will have all of that though.  Shooters are doing weird John Wick Gymkata type stuff at those.

Why do you have to act rude/childish?

I received a number of good inputs on my question and I appreciate it.  Yet a handful just had to be rude/childish.  Just why is that?  This isn't AR15.com or CalGuns.net.  BE has always (and I have been coming here for nearly 10 years) a place of learning and good information exchange.  If you can't contribute to a specific thread, why not simply skip it?

That may not be an attack. The Doodie Project is another competition shooting board I've seen, somewhat irreverent.

To the sports hoodies, how does that work in the summer? Wouldn't that be a bit suffocating? Am I missing something?

I think I am going to start wearing a wide-brimmed hat as well...

It's the CAS guys/gals that really get into the wagons/chairs.  I know one squad that almost appears to be tailgating...

Never seen a wet bar on the range though.

Amateurs. There's a guy who comes to ours. He has a motorized pull cart (read cart with wheels he put a motor assembly and handlebars on) that tows another cooler. He sits on the one and tows the other.  I am jealous.

It seems to be more an IDPA/ steel challenge thing than USPSA, but thats local conditions.

A wide-brim even more so if you don't wear muffs.

In Central Texas, you better believe it. I wear a wide brimmed straw hat before the match. During the match its a ball cap over a large bandanna French Foreign Legion style.

I have been wearing cargo shorts since cargo shorts were a thing.

Short sleeved shirt. No advertisements. (its easier the team shirt with no advertisements except the County, or a whicking T shirt).

You forgot the most fashionable item for old fart shooters: wagon with chair, umbrella, mini cooler and water jugs. Sometimes a wet bar...

I have only seen one person use shooting gloves in USPSA (she was a new to USPSA shooter at her first match) and never once in SCSA. I'll about I've only got about 2 years of matches under my belt but still.

I have not seen anyone use a sling either, even though it appears to be legal in PCC.

I have seen a couple of people use a sling in in steel challenge and action shooting (carbine and PCCs).  I don't know how effective it is (I shoot pistol only), but they were good shooters.

Gloves. I have only seen my wife use shooting gloves, and she doesn't shoot matches. Now this is central Texas, so keep in mind.  In the 3.5 hours where it is less than boiling, people will wear gloves, but take them off when it is their turn on the line.

I have worn $1 mittens while shooting at an outdoor range, but thats about it. For the reasons given, they are problematic.

  8. I like the current Production requirements as they work as intended: a direct comparable to SSP in IDPA. I can compete in both without changing anything.

But if it went to 15  I'd be fine as well. No biggie either way.

Having said that, I'd proffer chances are good that a 10 round limit will be the involuntary rule nationwide after 2020.

Yep, Austin on 1st and 3rd Saturday is a great choice!

Austin is like the mecca of action shooting. You can catch an USPSA, IDPA, or some type of steel match  seemingly every Saturday and Sunday.

The third Saturday run is kind of new. The first Saturday match registration usually is full by early in the week.  If you show up they usually can fit a person though.  The third Saturday one may be less crowded.

They also do an end of month Steel Challenge that is fun, and lets out about 12.30. The same range runs steel challenge matches on Tuesday nights during the summer, for those who like to experience the joys of heat exhaustion...😉

    Look up APSC on practiscore.

If this isn't enough for you Alpha Mike runs USPSA matches. They are between San Antonio and Austin.

Also noted were Copperas Cove Matches (which are well liked fyi), Temple and a metric buttload of IDPA matches (CAPS and Texas Tactical).

As an aside plan out to routes from Volente.  When it floods in Austin it seriously floods and Travis is a flood control lake.

Ranges: Eagle Peak, Shady Oaks, Austin Rifle Rifle club, Reds (meh).  Best of the West is rumored to be by by.

Dry fire at home before you leave for the match. In other competitive things I've done wonderful advice I've been given was "NEVER leave it to the officials."

As far as pick your battles, at times I've just said quietly "yeah whatever" and gave in. Other times I've said very sternly "NO" and refused to leave the stage until the item was redressed. There spectrum of jerk to a hole to maniac is pretty long, lot's of places both sides can occupy on it at any given time.

ps-most, definitely not all, but most match officiants are not in the top 10 of a match if ya know what i mean.

Additionally, getting into an argument on a minor point before the match will throw many shooters out of a proper mindset, even if right. Plus many of us are hacks just to have a good time, and this might immediately ruin that, at least for a portion of the day.

The Dr. can add more than I can I'm sure, but this is old training.  It's the same thing they told me in my early days in the Marines.  However, it's now the opposite. My last few years in the Corps as well as my current TCCC training in SWAT pretty much dictates a severe bleed in a limb equals a tourniquet every time.  Better to play it safe.  A tourniquet does not mean you're going to get the limb cut off.  Because of this, patrol officers are commonly seen with tourniquets on their duty belts these days.

AS part of out training on putting on tourniquets, we put them on each other-full strength.  Other than some mild bruising, it was not an issue (other than it hurt like hell).

The BURKE trigger is the best I’ve felt. I have both grey guns installed and BURKE triggers. The BURKE is better in all aspects. The BURKE has half the travel as the stock / Ggi and a better break. I felt someone’s home Ggi that was around 2 lbs. the break was mushy and the travel was the same. As long as the trigger is under 4 lbs or less, I’d rather have shorter travel and a good break. Going off feel, the BURKE is the same weight as my installed GGI trigger.

My Burke trigger is almost exactly 3 lbs. The trigger travel actually breaks before it hits vertical. It really is the proverbial breaking glass trigger.
