Do you IDPA? Have you noticed how people in USPSA think of IDPA as a little bit of a joke? Eventually both games will be a joke. Having lots of divisions doesn't improve the sport, it takes away from it.

Maybe put it this way, it devalues winning any division. The less value something has the less likely people are to work for it.

Except...following that argument USPSA should have one division only, of further only one firearm with only one modification schedule.

    Maybe.

I shoot steel matches once a month + - and most folks are shooting that with 22's, if you paint the steel I don't know why it wouldn't be just as easy to score .22 hits in USPSA side matches. As you noted, you have to decide what you want to do about activators.

My back would be ok with it if there was less steel to pick up.

    Same for my back.

It would be an issue if your group likes to put steel plates into columns where you have to shoot one before you can see the other.

As for competition with other shooters. What I've seen it doesn't really impact them. You make accommodation for the rim-fire shooters, not everyone else. If I could find a few more mags for my S&W I would probably do it as well, as I have tens of thousands of .22s, but not nearly as much 9mm.

It is only IDPA, therefore beneath contempt by some here, but a nearby club has been allowing .22s in NFC during the ammo and component shortages of the Panicdemic.  It was that or shut down because attendance was down about 75%.

Knockdown targets are not used, mover activation is by hand on a Popper or pull rope at the firing line, stomp pad, or turnstile.

I have been shooting my Nelson conversion most but not all the time; I occasionally shoot a centerfire just to keep some sense of recoil control.  The Nelson took ammo selection, cleaning regimen, and magazine adjustment, but now it is approaching centerfire reliability.

There is one CZ Kadet shooter doing very well, but most of the mouse guns are Glock 44, which have gotten pretty well broken in and tuned up.

I saw a S&W Plastic M&P Compact .22 and a Ruger of some sort at the night shoot last weekend.

Same here. They use pull rope for moving targets, leave a tight head shot for some drop targets, allow .22s to count if the steel is knocked over etc. There is some adaption required but it is not bad.

I imagine it would be more difficult in a USPSA match which normally has a lot of falling steel.

There are several IDPA matches and even more USPSA matches every month here in the greater Phoenix, AZ area, and many shooters participate in both disciplines.  Some regularly, some occasionally.  This includes some of the top shooters in the country.

While USPSA is certainly more popular, and individuals certainly have their preferences, when one can perform at or near the level of those top shooters, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference whether it is IDPA or USPSA . . . . . they are going to excel.

I'm a senior citizen with limited skill, and I personally prefer IDPA matches.  And ironically, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference whether it is IDPA or USPSA that I shoot . . . . . I'm going to strive to continuously improve my performance, but I'm never going to be described as someone who "excels" in those matches.

So . . . . try them both.  If you find you prefer one or the other, go with that one.  Both have things about them that will improve one's shooting skills.  Don't overthink it.  Enjoy yourself.

What he said. I find with the current bullet prices I've focused more on IDPA, primarily because of the lower ammo count.

A DQ must be supported by a rule and there is no such rule.

If this is advertised as a USPSA match, the club is ignoring the rulebook and applying a "local rule" which is prohibited by:

    3.3

    Applicability of Rules

USPSA matches are governed by the rules applicable to the discipline.

Host organizations may not enforce local rules except to comply with legislation or legal

    precedent in the applicable jurisdiction.

Any voluntarily adopted rules that are not in compliance with these rules must not be applied to USPSA matches without the express

written consent of the President of USPSA. All local rules allowed under these provisions will be documented at USPSA HQ.

Thats all well and good, but if the range bans your club the rulebook is worth less than nothing. I have had one range close because of errant rounds and another put its clubs "on notice" that if rounds go over the berm, that club is done. The perils of massive growth.

Something that has yet to really be brought up in this thread is, as you progress as a shooter you should understand your personal strengths a weaknesses as a shooter.  These strengths and weaknesses are never going to be the same between any 2 shooters.  Your strengths and weaknesses should be accounted for as you plan your run through a course of fire.  Skills like shooting on the move, shooting partials on the move, shooting steel on the move, etc.  Just because someone else can pull something off does not mean other shooters can. This does not always apply but, it is something to keep in mind when watching others shoot a course of fire.

So true. Unlike you fine people I am a suckie old fart shooter, and this really applies.

have found recently that since I am usually an RO at locals and we seem to have a bit of new/inexperienced shooters at one of the locals here that I've been doing poorly at that specific match all season. I'm a solid B SS shooter but cant seem to do anything but fail hard at this match every month. This past weekend I was running shooters, then scoring and putting it in the tablet. At one point I had to put my own scores in the tablet..... needles to say match mindset was not even close to being a thing. In fact by the end of the match I was wondering if shooting locals is even worth the time and ammo. I dont really care if I place well at them as I use them to see if what I've practiced is improving but still.

Yes, often in local matches I am in the same boat.  However, this can be rectified.  Don't RO every match. If asked, and you will be, be honest and say that you are taking this match off to focus. Also bringing this up with your club to start a drive to motivate volunteers to step up can be helpful.

  7. Twice. Once. The first time I was ironically the SO for the squad. Fumbled the pistol on the draw. No biggie. Took a few shooters off to get my head back in the game and SO'd the rest of the match.  When SOing/ROing I will often announce to the squad I've only had to DQ 3 people and one was myself, so lets not ruin my streak. 😀

Second nearly 2/3 done with local match. Popped a round before sights on target, completely my fault. The only issue was that the RO and other RO's getting into a discussion about whether it was enough to be a DQ while I stood there with Deer Eyes. Again no biggie. Helped tape for the rest of the match.

I just wish Dawson Precision still made the adjustable rear sight for these guns...

Yes I have an older M&P with those sights and they are excellent.

Also available, fully adjustable sights from LPA:

    http://www.lpasights.com/en/products/sps02sw6f/

Also Hi Viz.  S&W sells a version on their M&Ps.  I believe its elevation only adjustment but not sure. As an RO I've seen these and they are bright!

    https://www.hivizsights.com/product/sw-mp-adjustable-sight-set/

One can always combine Hi Viz or Dawson front sight and LPA fully adjustable rear sight.

*If it is striker fired and made out of plastic, it is operationally no different from a Glock, just a matter of personal preference and low sales resistance.  MY glockoid is a Smith and Wesson.

I may have to steal that phrase.  While I have a Sig 320 I miss shooting my old M&P pro. The adjustable grip was a real blessing to me.

I would disagree, I see guys I see in CO are mostly running full size 320 legions, Shadows and Tanfo's. A few Canik's and G34's but all full size. It's pretty rare to see someone rocking carry gear. So I don't think the growth has much to do with what people carry. It's hi-cap 9mm. Cheap and fun and people like it.

CO is the poor man's Open, and its ideal for old farts like myself with poor eyes. With modern CO/RMR's, its hard to beat for the price.

What is the Minimum distance that a popper should be engaged using 12 gauge with  7 and a half or #8 shot. Thanks

We shot IDPA style matches with shotguns in similar fashion on plates. We followed the rule of a 12 yards minimum and were good. The IDPA standard is 10 yards for steel and I think similar for USPSA.

Yeah, at the IDPA clubs I've shot at the crowd is a bit older than the USPSA crowd but I'm happy to see more participation and a renewed love for the sport with red dots. A lot of them were frustrated with deteriorating eyesight and the red dot helps overcome that for most of them.

Yes, I bought my last pistol (which is RD compatible) with the view that as the eyesight deteriorated I'd probably shift from iron sights over to it.

  13. 1. The strong desire to get my head handed to me.  🤔

    2. As has already been noted, usually the stage props are more developed. While I have found local clubs can put on stages as good or better ( and frequently we steal the stages for our own local matches) they typically don't have all the gear to put together the typically prop intensive stages for every stage that are often seen at majors.

  14. Remember the issue is really the prescription. You can get many types of sunglasses and safety glasses with prescription.

But the prescription itself has to be tailored to shooting.  In your area ask around for a good doc who works with shooters on their prescriptions. It really helps.

...then later get a carry optics like everyone else with bad eyesight...:)

  15. You could actually do "shooting" scenarios online. Have a shooter doing his thing and the instructor go through what was wrong, where to best stand etc. etc.  Frankly its a good thought for a best practices tips videos.

As an SO/RO (depending on match), I'd love some sort of best practices session or videos like that.

  16. In addition to all these points: look up USPSA stages as well. They can give you ideas.  Clubs I am at have often adopted USPSA stages with minor tweeks to make things different. Facebook has a USPSA and ISPSC Stage Design Page which has interesting stages that can be excellent fuel for stages.
