  1. TAC is my powder of choice and I did some loads with the 75 grain Hornady BTHP to see if I wanted to switch to it from 77 SMK as it is half the price in bulk.

I loaded all the way up to the published max 25.8, which seemed too high but didn't seem to show signs of pressure.

Accuracy was terrible above 24 grains of TAC, 2-3 MOA groups plus fliers too.

Between 23 and 24 grains it was fine and at some charge weights actually more accurate than my 77 SMK load out of a 18" Odin barrel. And almost as fast.

I decided to switch to it and buy 1000 bullets. Than the world went crazy and now it's out of stock everywhere. Dammit.

  2. I think C More really missed a chance here. This scope is not commonly used in 3 gun but actually fills a nice void in the market between the viper and the razor. They could have used this opportunity to get their product out in the hands of people who would likely influence others to purchase it, potentially making a big move long term.

The scope is worth $800 and definately worth $600. What holds me back is their lack of full warranty, which is more or less standard now for scope companies, thanks to Vortex. I wanted this C More to upgrade my wife's 3 Gun scope. But for $600 I will buy a less good scope that I know will be replaced when she throws a shotgun into it in a dump barrel. That's the game we play.

I intend to tell C More my expert opinion on this subject. Maybe they will hire me to be their vice president of marketing. Then I can get an employee discount!

The website didn't have a lead time.  I'm guessing 6 months.  If i get it sooner, great!

Yeah, i'm assuming 5-6 months. If its longer than so be it. 3 Gunners aren't whiners, or we'd never ever stop whining. Because our sport is ridiculous haha (for real though, no haha).

Other custom guns I have ordered also went well past stated lead times. My whiskey stills were a year late and that was a $300k contract. My time on a custom banjo wait list went a year past the original date AND then the build time went well over too. And none of those were during a pandemic freakout and economic dumpster fire!

  4. My wife has very small hands. I had her try pretty much every option (couldn't find a Walther SF though) in the hunt for something that would work well for her for 3-Gun and general fun shooting. The SP-01 with thin LOK grips fit her hand the best. I bought Cajun parts and did the SAO conversion, which made the trigger reach manageable and made the pistol ideal for competition. I would have preferred to start with a Shadow 2, but its grip was larger. She went from being pretty awful with a pistol to being pretty decent.

Owned both, the manual of arms is different so you pretty much have to stick with one. Personally I didn't like the 1301 bolt release or cleaning the gas block.

Now I own a M2 and a Franchi (basically a M2 with recoil spring in different place). To me they feel more solid than the 1301.

Note that Beretta owns Benelli, Franchi and Stoeger so they make guns at every price point.

    Don't overlook Bredas.

The Bredas look the most 3 gun ready from the box for sure, but I keep hearing about reliability issues...

A friend I got into 3 Gun found an amazing deal on a Franchi. He cut the port and added a mercury recoil reducer and it runs great and recoil looks really flat. I haven't gotten to shot it yet.

  6. Both are reliable and both need 3gun specific work to be ideal, it really comes down to personal preference. If you want tons of aftermarket support and components, Benelli by far has the upper hand.

    Advantages to the 1301 are;

    1.  Because its gas operated you can add weight without effecting function. I have an 8 oz lead rod in the end of my tube and 12 oz in the stock. It barely moves under recoil. That's how I like it.

    2. Because it is gas operated it functions reliably in any position. Not only do we often get stuck in less than ideal positions in 3 gun, but sometimes in the heat of a stage you may get a less than ideal mount after movement of weapons transition. No big deal for the 1301.

    3. Its Longer foreend allows for a bit more aggressive support hand positioning.

I clean mine every 500 rounds or so, same as I would for any shotgun. I replace the mag tube spring once a year at least. I have also replaced the bolt spring once just to get ahead of it. The only malfunction I have had in many 1000s of rounds was once when I forgot to lube it after cleaning.

A slight downside to the 1301 that often gets overlooked is that the mag tube sits much closer to the barrel in the reciever. That means there is more aluminum to remove to get a slick loading port, depending on your loading style and preference.

I have some fancy guns, Dissident KL-12, Honcho on order. If I thought the 1301 was anything less than ideal for me I wouldn't hesitate to switch, but after shooting some different shotguns, I really do think my self-customized 1301 is tops.

All firearms were loaded to capacity with a round in the chamber, safety on. Then we went to the line and were ready to go. Very safe and as far as I know there were no issues with this process.

I'm sorry, just trying to understand as that is pretty radically different from every match ever. Did this loading occur at a preload station and the weapons stayed there? Or all weapons were hot all the time, in cases, carts, slung etc? Thanks!

Had a load of fun at the match. The new format where we pre-loaded and made everyone hot before they came to the line seemed to not only save time but gave the match momentum and energy. I think people shot better and enjoyed the match more.

Do you mean that rifle and pistol mags were inserted into weapons before stepping to the line?

I’d like to know how many people use the recoil buffer?

Mine was starting to fail, so I removed it and have been running without one since. Cajun gunworks recommends not running the buffer...little benefit for the risk of failing or short stroking the slide.

I do not use it in my 9mm with 125 pf loads for 3 gun. I swear the impulse feels better without it, might just be in my mind though.

  10. I don't know of anything in South Georgia, but Northern Florida may have some options for him. For 3-Gun in Georgia there is one monthly match, Atlanta 3 Gun, about 30 mins southeast of Atlanta. There are 2 matches that are currently quarterly, Georgia Mountain Shooting Assoc (GMSA) and Riverbend, both in the foothills of the mountains. There is also a monthly match near Gainesville that they call "Tactical Rifle" which is not standard 3-Gun (not much shotgun, vickers limited scoring).

Theres also a quarterly match close by in South Carolina in Greenville, and a monthly match close to Georgia at the CMP marksmanship park near Talladega in Alabama.

Edited to Add: There were rumors late in 2019 that 3 Gun Nation was changing ownership and they were going to start running matches at Arena down in Blakely, but I'm not sure where that stands or if they just meant major matches. That would be pretty close to Moody AFB.

Here you go. This is the way the new Beretta  1301 comp pro should have been released IMO. Although the stock is very nice and makes the gun extremely soft I felt like they missed opportunity to evolve this gun.

What approach did you take in retaining the shell latch/bolt release pin when taking the port that low on the right side?

  12. For my TSO I have a Steadfast holsters USPSA limited style holster with very solid retention that I use for the majority of matches that I shoot. For matches with sling work, prone, obstacles, etc I have a modified GLS. Both are on the large Bladetech TMMS mount with the receiver on a BOSS Hanger so they are easy to switch around.

What works best is somewhat gonna depend on what types of matches are in your area and what you enjoy. But the GLS is only $40 so its a safe place to start. Even if you end up mostly shooting bay style and want something different, the GLS will still come in handy on occasion.

    My take:

    1.  When more local 2gun matches popped up, 3gun started to decline.  Don't mean to be rude, but not wanting shotguns to be part of this topic is ignoring at least part of the obvious.

No rudeness taken! I'll explain my statement though.

A bunch of people hating on shotguns in a thread about reinvigorating 3-Gun is not particularly helpful, since shotguns are one of the 3 guns in the name of the sport. It is not constructive. It would be like me going into a thread about reinvigorating 5-Stand and saying that I don't like having 5 stands, it needs to be reduced to 4. Thats not reinvigorating 5-Stand, its changing the sport to 4-Stand.

I chose to put 3-Gun in the title and not Multigun, because for many of us 3-Gun refers to a fairly specific sport that had packed out matches (with lots of shotgun action included) 2+ years ago, but now has receded somewhat. The folks packing those matches likely did not start hating shotguns, so that does not explain that element of the issue. It may partially explain why fewer new folks have been attracted to 3-Gun and the thread did cover that a good bit before going down a red-dots-on-pistols rabbit hole. But many matches that include 2x4, PCC, and 2-Gun divisions still have not seen numbers rebound, which suggests more complicated issues, which you summarize in your other points, all of which I agree with.

  14. I built this CZ SP-01 for my wife to compete in 3-Gun Open Division. She's getting pretty good with it, just waiting on a KL-12 to show up now!

I got the pistol with Red Dot already mounted in the cut slide for $700, it had barely been shot. It also had a stainless guiderod and a few other upgrades.

I converted it to SAO with Cajun parts and put my beloved CZC extended safety on. Plus a Shadow 2 mag release so she can drop the mag without shifting grip. Some purple LOK grips and a handful of 26 round CZ mags later and I am right at $1300 all in.

I agree. Not talking about stages at majors, but local matches.

We have had a couple of local matches that the MD designed all of the stages for very experienced shooters, but not the fairly newbies that were showing up. Many got disappointed because they timed out and the few experienced guys blew thru the stages. So a few each match tended to not come back because they felt the total match/stages were beyond their experience level. Yes, all need to be challenged. But if a newer shooter spends several thousand on guns, gear, ammo, match fees, & time they need to get their money's worth.

My point is to keep shooters coming back the stages should be designed for all levels to enjoy. If 50 or 60% are timing out maybe the stages/par times need to be tweaked. Again based on match size, time, reset, etc. Need to keep the majority interested. My thoughts and advice to the MD was if you had a super difficult stage, design the next one so all can do it. Remember it is a game and all are there to have fun. These small changes have now kept the match full & running on time.

    gerritm

For the match I design stages for, my personal philosophy is to build stages that are executable by new shooters and experienced shooters can just execute them fast. People rarely time out on the bay stages with 90 second par times. On my field course I generally design it to incorporate 3 bay like areas and I just dont run a par time on that one, if that adds a bit of time to the match oh well, the fun is worth it. Working on a jungle run now, I'm not sure what that will need.

The long range stage (out to 300) gives people trouble par time wise, lots of bad zeros even amongst experienced shooters. Lots of going to war and wastage of ammo. When people time out on that one it's a mercy rather than a punishment.

Nearby Atlanta 3 Gun is a very challenging (and awesome) match and skills wise it can be intimidating to new shooters. Its good for there to be local matches that cater to experienced shooters (you couldn't pay me to miss an A3G monthly) as long as there are some more beginner friendly matches around to accomodate beginners, which is exactly what I try to provide. That feeds new shooters into the more challenging monthly matches which in turn feed the major matches.

So I reckon I think lack of a formal structure that organizes that system is one of the major issues in 3 gun right now. It happens organically in certain places, which end up having strong 3 Gun culture, and doesn't happen elsewhere where 3 gun fizzles. We need all 3 match types for the sport to be healthy, and it sure would be nice to operate with a level system like USPSA.

UML could provide that, but frankly I can't get my club on board the UML train because they don't want to have to adopt the UML pcc stance.

If you've got any photos of your finished work, I'd love to see it.  Im considering the QLS for the BOSS hanger as well.

Here's the bladetech large TMMS on the BOSS hanger. It is super stable and has worked perfectly for matches about every weekend since I put it on. You can buy the individual components of the BOSS at stoeger pro shop and save a few bucks since the y does not have to be used in this set up.

After getting the new taccom caddies I switched them to large tmms too as it provided more rigid connection with their added size and weight.
