  1. Last year I did a little experiment to try and make a Sig 365XL into a somewhat-competitive CO gun.  Part of that process was sourcing mags.  Sig only made 15 round mags, which wasn’t nearly enough for a good CO gun.

However, Promag makes 20 and 30 round mags for the little Sig guns.  Why would they do that?  I’m not sure, but I’m glad they did.  I got two of the 20 round mags along with some 3D printed sleeves to fill in the space between the bottom of the grip and mag baseplate.

Ill tell you, those mags took a lot of work to run correctly.  However, what I found was that cleaning out the gunk inside the mag bodies as well as substituting the Promag followers for OEM Sig followers were the keys to getting the mags to work reliably.  I also sanded down the edges of the followers just slightly so they wouldn’t bind as much around the 8-10 round mark.

So to answer your question: based on my singular experience with one type of Promag, the mag bodies and followers need the most attention. If I could replace the springs I’d probably do that as well.

  2. The folks I’ve seen do well on this are drawing to the lower target then transitioning to either of the side targets, then hitting the other side target after the reload and finishing up top.

I absolutely bumbled this one and accidentally put 5 on my first target and put 3 on the next to avoid the extra shot penalty.  Time was 7.96 which is pretty good from what I’ve seen, but the penalties killed me.

  3. One way to dabble without spending a ton of money is to take your normal CO gun, get a threaded barrel (if you don’t have one already) then throw a comp and magwell on it.  It’ll cost you $2-300 and give you a taste of how much you can shred with a real open gun.  It won’t be competitive, but most of us aren’t competitive anyway so don’t worry about it.

If you find that you like going that fast, start saving up your dimes for a used open 2011 and a reloading setup.

I shot a classifier at a match a few weeks ago.  I did surprisingly well and have been looking forward to seeing my score and resulting class rankings only to see that the score was not used (Coded A on the USPSA classifier page).  There is a form I can fill out I guess to dispute the determination that the score was wrong.  I am wondering if it’s worth doing and also if anyone experienced something similar.  TIA.

I did this last year.  Was B class at the time but managed to shoot a GM score during a classifier match.  I appealed the flag and it was removed about a day later.

Things that helped included having video showing my run, as well as a handful of M runs earlier in the day.  If you know anyone else who shot the match and maybe had video of the stage, that might help your case.

  5. I got a Q4 SF recently and it has been great.  On the advice of Hwansik Kim, I threw on TF +6 basepads and grams spring/follower kits. I get the advertised 23+1 and they generally work fine, but I will sometimes get a round that hits the feed ramp low (or “nose dives”) and locks up the gun.  Anyone else run into this issue? Anyone have a solution?

If your locak IDPA SO knowledge and rules enforcement is as "good" as it locally to me, don't assume it is.

At my local IDPA matches I see SOs let people skate with all sorts of clearly unacceptable gear.  I'm talking s#!t like full on USPSA belt rigs, 2011s with compensators, and the like.

You’re completely correct.  Local SO rules knowledge is inconsistent at best.  Unfortunately I’m just a dude who dabbles in IDPA so I don’t know any better than them.

Here’s a guy shooting it at IDPA nationals last year.  I assume that if it’s okay at nationals then it’s G2G elsewhere:

Don't know about IDPA, don't care and if I did their rules are a complete mess anyway

Definitely not legal for CO in USPSA, and it should stay that way for two reasons: it's SAO and the dot doesn't reciprocate with the slide.

One local guy shoots it in ESP.  I’m assuming that means it’s legal

  8. I think it’s worth it.  Getting a Honcho reinvigorated my desire to practice and made me improve pretty rapidly.  And although I didn’t dabble in other gun games much before, it allowed me to dip my toes in whenever I wanted.

For what it’s worth, I also went from B in limited to M in about two matches with the Honcho, so that’s kinda cool!

I'm currently in the process of getting custom ear pro through my insurance so thought I'd share some details of my experience thus far.

I called House of Hearing in St. George Utah. They're a dealer of SoudGear Phantoms and setup a booth at a lot of the bigger matches in the area. They were recommended by a friend and I think they sponsor Sailer and a few other pros. I gave them my insurance details. They called my insurance to check on coverage and called me back the next day. My insurance, BCBS of Minnesota PPO, covers $1000 per ear, every 3 years under "hearing aid device". I have a $500 yearly deductible for this type of coverage and since I hadn't met any of it, it would have to be paid.

I went ahead with the process:

    1. I went to a local Audiologist to have a hearing test and molds of my ears done... cost was $75.
      1. Chris at House of Hearing explained that some insurance will only cover the electronic ear pro if you have hearing loss. In his experience, even the mildest case will satisfy this requirement
      2. Fortunately I had very minor hearing loss so I was good
    2. Emailed the results of the hearing test to House of Hearing and mailed the molds to them
    3. The same day I sent the hearing test they submitted a claim to my insurance this way if they don't approve the claim, I can choose if I want to move forward and pay out of pocket
    4. 3 days ago I got word from them that my claim was approved and they are starting to build my ear pro
      1. It took 3 weeks for my insurance to approve the claim
      2. They said I would receive my ear pro 7-10 days from the day the claim was approved

My total cost was $500 out of pocket. I'm getting the SoundGear Phantom but it's not the regular version. It will have custom programming based on my hearing test results. Also, they will be "unlocked" so I can create additional custom digital programs from the app. What Chris explained to me is that they are basically same product as the top end Harris and Son "Twenty" model as the internals are supplied by Starky.

Hopefully I will get them in the next week and will share more when I do.

This post is incredibly helpful.  My insurance covers hearing aids up to $1400 every 36 months, which just so happens to be $1 more than the cost of the Soundgear Phantom plugs.  To be honest I had no idea how to even start the process of getting them, and emailing Soundgear was only somewhat helpful.  Your post nails it.

I had to oil it a little to get it to freely roll. Little metal shavings also find their way in there and restrict the wheel sometimes.

Speaking of this, are there any videos out there on how to disassemble this thing for cleaning and lubing?

I have a 40 MBX mag for a g35.4 with the competition follower. I can stuff 20 in there just fine, but you need to check if the follower catches on the slide stop. My particular mag doesn't like to drop free unless there's at least 1 round in the mag. I haven't messed with reshaping the mag body yet.

Did you get the non-lockback version?  The follower should not be catching on the slide stop and causing the issues that you're describing if the follower has the appropriate cutout to prevent the slide from locking back.
