  1. I run Br4 primers exclusively in my major match ammo. Extremely small SD in pf and ignition is 100%. I load on a 1050 and seat primers deep. Only primers I've had issues with reliability are Military rifle primers although the CCI 41s are good but Winchester don't even think about trying.  15lb main spring with extended firing pin and extra power firing pin spring.  Crush the primers in a little if you're on a 650

I keep seeing people speak highly of Venom Customs guns. I have not personally seen one at a match or at least recognized one for a Venom Custom gun. I have to admit, I am a bit of vanity snob when it comes to guns. I weigh looks and function fairly closely. With that being said I have really liked the pictures I have seen of the Venom builds.

    My buddies venoms

  3. Venom, Rafferty, Bedell, Brazos, McLearn, EMG, Infinity are all very good. They gave differing time lines depending on your patience level. They will all run very well.

I know a shorter turn around would be a Brazos Custom with a cheeley grip. I bought the fitted short block kit last year and finished it up with internals, grip and sights. It ran great all last year and it still going strong. He has many years in the game. I may get another kit but already have a Bedell as well

I don't have a roll sizer, maybe in the future it would be best to purchase one but for now I've been known to encounter just a few piece of brass/ammo that don't pass case guage.  I case gauge all of my ammo and I've loaded major/minor and thus far no issues.  But I noticed one thing that speaks volumes of fully process brass works best in my press and passes case gauge 99.9% of the time.  Buying fully process brass isn't cheap anymore~

The occasional piece of brass getting caught under the mount, bullet separation, worn out primer pockets.

38sc people shoot one headstamp and have very few if any problems. I shoot a major match almost monthly so the cost is minimal given what I spend already. If you don't compete in many majors, you don't need new.

You'll read many anecdotes about no failures with range brass. New brass is 100% in spec. Do what's best for you

Normally, I purchase once fired range brass, clean and processed but at times I also get some range brass, clean and inspect each casing before loading for major ammo. I don't have a rollsizer, but I resize my range brass multiple times, 2x times using my processing toolhead and 1x using my main loading tool head.  Yes a bit overkill, but it has been working for me. For loading minor ammo  I'm not very picky but I do clean my brass quite extensively to the point of ocd, wet tumble, media pins, the works.

For those that shoot exclusively open pistols, do you prefer new brass or are you using range brass, processing it and loading it or purchasing fully process brass? There's a video from Atlas gun works, indicating that new brass is highly recommended but I don't own an Atlas but a Honcho~  Would like to know what's the consensus out there in the world of open shooters...

    Thanks~

Yes, new starline brass for major matches exclusively. The ejection is more consistent as well as feeding. No  issues the last six months doing it this way

i was using 3n38 at first then went to AA7

    maybe ill try hs6

Those are both great powders and low pressure. You were right about the manufacturer. He has a reputation of building guns that don't always hold up. I'm pretty certain that's where you slide and comp cracking came from.

Was it a titanium comp By chance?

i will say tho like the brass cost is a major issue.

I bought 50k 38sc brass at the beginning of 2020 so for me its easy to just leave brass and not pick it up or anything

not everyone is in my position.

Paying .5 cents per round for 9mm brass is way easier, but keep in mind there's no such thing as 38 sc crimped brass meaning you never have to swage it

9 major  offers almost the same performance for a fraction of the price but you have to pay a little more attention the brass prep.

i can literally shoot 38sc until the hull cracks and i have definitely shot like 10x fired brass before

with 9 major you dont have that option, if you are reloading you might get 2 or 3 times out of the same used brass.

I've got 10-12 reloads out my starline and federal 9 brass with HS-6. They can go far with slower powders

i mean i did several weeks of load testing and dev and arrived at 168 pf with my 9 major load

the comp still cracked and so did the slide

the issue is the case space being so limited it leads to insane pressures

    What powder?

Thanks man, I have an Akai in 9mm been on the fence about a 39SC open gun but the cost of brass and availability always comes up but yet we shell out 7k to 8k on these blasters 🤷

I've been using 9mm star line brass for the last six months and both my guns run very consistently. HS-6 is lower pressure and meters well. 38sc is a tiny bit flatter but doesn't necessarily make your skills better. .

I still remember when people thought CO was a dumb idea… yet 5 years later, it’s the most popular division…

Limited, as the rules are now, is meant for .40 Major. .40 is no longer popular or relevant to most of the world outside Limited. I think Glock is the only major manufacturer producing .40 handguns anymore. Perhaps a slight rule change could bring more interest to the division.

No, it won't. Everybody and their mom is in some optic division. Compete with what you like and have fun. Like everyone else is lol

  11. Started in limited. Now in Open. Love my limited guns and would never sell them. Still practice and compete in locals with them.

Why does changing equipment rules seem like it will magically bring interest back into irons?? Optics are just better for people old and young.

If you love limited please don't let others, or the lack thereof, in the divisions effect your participation. It's the competitors choice to not participate. They numbers have spoken and Carry Optics is king.

Personally, I would love for a separate Limited Nationals to be held every year. I would be the first to sign up for it in addition to Open. All the big dogs would shoot up too I think
