  1. The Glock, XD, S&W M&P and other polymer guns have many fine qualities.

As a carry gun they offer light weight, high round count, accuracy, reliability, etc.

However, they are guns that are mass marketed to Police, Military and civilians for a variety of purposes.

They are mass produced and sold by the gazillions which is one of the reasons they are relatively inexpensive.

It's true that many people compete successfully with stock Glocks and not just in production.

It's also true that you can take a Glock or similar platform and customize it to a high degree.

However, by the time you get to where you want to go with it, it will not be a sub $1000 gun anymore.

Depending on how far you want to go it could approach the price tag of a 2011.

A $2000 race gun is a special purpose high tech gun, designed and built for competition.

It is a low volume semi-custom or custom firearm often built (or at least assembled) by a gunsmith.

It takes more work to build a reliable and smooth breaking 2 lb trigger.

It takes work to mate a slide and barrel to extremely close tolerances.

    More work equals more money.

    They are just different animals.

At the end of the day, you just need to go with what feels right to you.

  2. Okay,

Now I'm seriously considering the founding of the Snobbish Limited Only Blasters club. (SLOB's)

There are plenty of snobs (and slobs) in the limited division and we deserve our club as well.

We may not have a goddess but we have big sticks AND iron sights.

It's the best of both worlds baby!

Some of us even have a 6 inch!

We also have our own little brother division. Top that.

    SLOBS unite!

  3. Hmmm.

I think you need to write new bylaws.

Suppose a 1911 elitist snob banana shows up with a single stack that's not legal.

If he gets bumped into open, will he become a 1911 elitist snob / SOB by default?

Will he still be allowed to dance?

  4. Zhunter,

I can meet all qualifications except having shot a SS match in '07

However, I have serious intent to do so in the immediate future.

    Does dry firing count?

I am wondering if I could get a probationary membership.

What I lack in shooting history I can make up in elitist snobbery.

I may even get a JMB tatoo.

  5. Roger,

Just out of curiosity, how many shooters do you have so far?

    Tony

Yea Roger. I only posted the application two hours ago. How many shooters have sent the form in so far?

    MHearn

Silly me, I assumed it had been up longer since the match is only six weeks or so away.

I guess I should have read the whole thread.

Keep me on my toes Mark.

Allow me to re-phrase the question.

How many shooters are you expecting?

I am just curious as to the number and size of the squads.

It's been 2 years since I shot Alabama but if I remember correctly, there were 7-8 on a squad and it seemed to move pretty well.

    Always a fun match.

  6. I for one am disappointed.

I would have liked to see Favre beat the undefeated Pats in the Super Bowl.

What a way for him to end a great career and go out in style.

    Oh well.

No glory for those that can't manage a first down in the fourth quarter.

Manning and the Giants played well enough to win and maybe it's time for little brother to get his day in the sun.

  7. I just diagnosed another person with colon cancer.

If you're 50 or older, do yourself a favor and go get screened. It's not that big of a deal. It's a lot easier to take out a polyp than to treat metastatic colon cancer.

For some reason, the stories of what it used to be like in the old days are still lingering. The bowel preps are better. You don't have to drink a gallon of crap anymore. If your kidneys are working ok, you drink two small bottles of fluid, meet your doctor the next morning for happy hour, do some time travel, wake up in recovery, go home, eat a nice meal and take a nap the rest of the day. You might say weird things after the nurse gives you the drugs, but nobody will find out. If you start playing with yourself during the procedure, it doesn't mean you're gay. (I'm just kidding, no one has ever done that). Just go get screened!

Send me a PM and I'll tell you exactly what to expect. If you've had a colonoscopy, please feel free to post your experience here.

    Chris,

I've never had a colonoscopy, but it brings up an interesting question.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer last August.

During my workup I was poked, prodded and violated so much, I felt like I had been kidnapped by aliens.

With a CT scan, bone scan, PET scan, and a pelvic MRI in my medical resume,

wouldn't any cancer in the colon have shown up in one of those tests?

Do I really need to be scoped?

I am now 33 treatments into a 45 treatment course of radiotherpy (IMRT)

Some rectal irritation comes along with prostate radiation.

Would that make the colonoscopy more difficult?

I suppose it's something I would want to do in the future as secondary cancers are a (small) risk in radiotherapy.

  8. []post-1238-1200763629.jpgI set out on this quest in the 90s, then the hi caps, the open gun, 3 gun and the kids college and life in general got in the way. Last year when the single stack deal came up, it was time. Caspian, Schueman classic, EGW, Bomars and Ed Brown safeties, Tripp hc and Ion Bond. And of course Benny Hill. If the ability and desire were still there this pistol could do it all and look good doing it.----------Larry

    Sweet!

    Did I read that right?

You had Tripp hard chrome the frame and Ion Bond on the slide?

  9. The more I think about it the more I am drawn to the idea of an SVI.

I would probably go with something similar to the one pictured in my previous post.

I would be worried about the squared trigger guard though.

I think most standard 1911's have a round trigger guard and I'm wondering how difficult it might be to find a holster that would work with it.

I did correspond with SVI briefly about building what I want.

I guess I will have to revise my thinking.

Money is definately an object. :surprise:

My open gun didn't cost that much.

  10. Wow,... that's harsh.

If you are capable of shooting at the highest level, you know what the gun needs, and it ain't much.

I never said I was capable of shooting at the highest level.

I only said I would like to have a gun that could get me there IF I DO MY PART.

I will believe the hardware doesn't matter when I see someone win the nat's with a bone stock GI model.

If you aren't, the best gun in the world is just decoration.

There are roughly 16,000 members of IPSC and only tiny fraction hold titles.

I guess the rest of us are just "decorated".

If the shooting was important to you, you would be out with what you have, getting better.

I shoot often, compete hard, and never stop trying to improve. I just haven't chosen to play in that particular division... yet.

    Money no object?

Money is always an object but some things mean more to me than money.

Start yesterday, buy bullets, get instruction. :)

I started way before yesterday, buy so many bullets the UPS man hates me, and I am getting instruction.

I am not a gun smith and don't have the skills to build a top notch race gun.

I'm just interested in the informed opinion of others as to what their dream gun would be and who would build it.

I thought this thread could be a lot of fun, but I've been wrong before.

  11. Now that the BOD has "made an honest woman" of the Single Stack division, I'm thinking of playing some in that arena.

I can't help but think that I would be better off spending my limited time and resources trying to master the guns I already shoot.

However, watching my single stack gather dust for another year may be more than my conscience can bear.

I acutally own 2 skinny guns, but only one of them is close to being race ready.

It needs to go to the smith for a couple of new goodies and a tune up first.

Looking over my Springer got me thinking about what I would like to compete with if money were no object.

If you wanted to get serious in this division, what would you want in your holster?

There are a lot of options.

    You could:

Buy a production gun and have it pasteurized and homoginized by your favorite smith ...... Been there done that.

Have a gun built from scratch by one of the well known smiths ....... Tempting but who would you choose?

Buy a gun prebuilt or custom from someone like Wilson Combat or SVI ....... Hard to go wrong with this option.

Have a gun built in the custom shop of a major manufacturer like S&W or Springfield Armory ... I like that idea.

I'm talking about a gun that you would want your name engraved on.

A gun that could take you to the top if you do your part.

A gun that would stay in your family for generations.

A gun that feels like its on ball bearings when you pull the slide back.

A gun that stacks bullets in the same hole time after time no matter what ammo you stick in it.

A gun that just keeps going like the energizer bunny.

I'm talking about a gun so beautiful that it reminds me of the first time I saw my wife.

    Let the Quest begin.

  12. I own several guns that I am fond of but wouldn't hold on to if they became redundant.

I would prefer to recycle them into guns that I would shoot.

The only "must keep" gun in my collection is a Series 80 Colt Stainless in 45 ACP.

It was left to me by my brother-in-law who died of lung disease two years ago.

I was with him when he bought it and we took it to the range to try it out.

He emptied a magazine at some bowling pins and after missing all of them, he said "I think the sights are off".

I said "Let me try", and cleaned them.

When I handed the gun back to him he grinned and said "I guess it's not the sights".

That was the only time and the last time it was ever fired.

I have very mixed emotions about the gun because I never fire it, but could never part with it.

It seems a shame to let it just sit there until it gets passed to another owner upon my own demise.

It's a bone stock gun and I'm seriously considering having it tricked out by a gunsmith and working it into a mission to win a single stack title.

I think that would be a fitting tribute to the man that left it to me.

    Keep your guns Carina.

I've never felt bad about keeping a gun, but I've sure had a lot of regrets over the ones that got away.

    Tony

  13. This sounds like a really good time and I wish there were someway I could attend.

I know I still own one or two single stacks.

I'm just not sure I could find them.

I think I gave one of them to the kids to play with back in '04

I wonder if it still works.

They must be around here somewhere......

    :goof::goof::goof:
