  1. Forester,

It sounds like you have been doing your homework.

You read, learn, dryfire, and do the things it takes to get better.

You have set out goals for yourself.

As long as you continue to do that, I think it is safe to say you're going to do well in any division.

You can stay in L10 or SS and develop your skills until you go as far as your talent and ambition will take you.

    Nothing wrong with that.

However, it sounds to me that you have been around just long enough to start feeling that need for speed.

You want to know what it feels like to blast through a stage without the limitations imposed by 10 round magazines.

    Give limited a try.

You may find it is exactly what you are looking for as a competitor.

I have shot in Limited division for several years now and enjoy it immensely.

Even so, I still sign up for L10 from time to time.

There's nothing wrong with broadening your horizons.

  2. I don't believe the DOH is legal under the new rule book.

There is an item (#20) in the Appendix for Single Stack Division that states the front strap all the way to the trigger guard must be at or above the top of the belt.

I don't believe the DOH meets this criteria.

It doesn't carry the gun high enough.

It may have been legal under the provisional rules, but no more.

  3. The standard load for my SVI is 5.1 of N320 behind 180 Zero JHP, WSP and WW or Starline Brass.

I load to OAL of 1.175"

This produces a power factor of around 173.

This allows enough margin for any variations due to temps or chronograph readings from match to match.

TG is my powder of choice for the .45 but I'm not as happy with it in the .40

It is more temperature sensitive than most of the other powders I use.

That plus the fact that it seems to run at lower velocities in my gun.

Most folks report making major at around 4.7 w/ 180 bullets.

I have gone up to 4.8 and only got 160 pf.

To get to major with a comfortable margin I would probably need at least 5.0 grains.

I'm not sure I am willing to do that in a high pressure cartridge and a powder that's temp sensitive.

    I'll stick with N320.

  4. I have a STI Eagle in .45 ACP. At first I had some functioning problems with it but after running some rounds through it and makign sure my ammo is loaded to the correct length (shorter OAL than for a SS) it now runs fine and shoots awesome.

    Neal in AZ

What length are you loading 230 RN?

    Remington Factory runs around 1.260

That is where I normally start when working up a load.

  5. I own an STI Edge in .45 acp.

I bought it with the idea of making it the ultimate L10 gun.

In Limited 10, capacity is fixed and there is no round count advantage for the 40 as there would be in limited.

When the two cartridges are on equal footing in capacity, I tend to favor the 45.

You can make major with about any powder you care to use and it is a low pressure round which is more forgiving of temp variations, OAL, etc.

I also like the large magwell advantage over a single stack.

When I first got the gun I did run into some reliability problems.

I started out with Montana Gold 200 gr jacketed, which is extremely accurate but didn't want to feed reliably.

I think most of the problem was magazines that didn't lock into the gun high enough.

I decided to buy a set of tuned mags from Bevin Grams and things got better but still had some issues.

Went back to 230 gr round nose bullets which ran fine but I discovered that the gun would go to slide lock with a round still in the mag.

I tried taking some material off the slide lock but couldn't take enough off to correct the problem.

Then I simply ground the followers back so that they couldn't engage the slide lock at all.

This seemed to work but now it is like my limited gun in that it won't lock open when empty.

I have another set of mags with the original STI springs and followers that is set up for slide lock.

The gun now runs just fine with 230 gr round nose ammo.

It just took some time and tinkering to get there.

  6. Here is a pic of Robert arriving at the match.

    I should have known

    LMAO

Yall are quick on the draw with these pictures and links.

Yes, someone says Glock and what we hear is "Load and Make Ready".

  7. Now that my race gun has given permission for a menage et trois, I will definately be sporting a SS.

Coming soon to a match near you.

If I can drag out my camera, I will tender an official application for SSES.

After all I do have 4, count 'em, 4!!! single stacks in my collection.

Who better to occupy member #38 than the 38superman?

  8. Thanks Steve!

Depending on the weather and where I'm going I carry:

An old(er) Kimber Compact in .45ACP

Another Kimber 5" in .45 ACP

    or

    (don't beat me Merlin!!!)

    An STI 2011 in - - .45CP

Generally with 200 grain +P Federal Expanding Full Metal Jackets stuffed in the magazine.

    And I hunt with a .45 (70) or a .45 (90).

    Holy crap!!!

I thought I was the only guy on the planet that owns a 2011 in .45acp.

    (Don't beat me either Merlin)

  9. No argument here DrawandDuck.

If I knew I was going to be in a gun fight I would reach for my open blaster.

(Although I probably would end up stone deaf if I took it into a firefight without the benefit of hearing protection).

But the reality is I don't carry it.

It lives in my range bag and stays at home except on match days.

The gun I do carry is a Para P18.9 LDA.

    No dogma, just the facts.

  10. +1 Dale!

    More Dogma

ETA: I'd shrunk this to use it as an avatar and it's too small. As soon as I get the chains on my truck I'll re-scan it and make it bigger.

Save your electricity. Sorry you have to use chains.

    This is great.

  11. Last night I had a long talk with my race gun.

    It went something like this:

"Lately I've been thinking about shooting some matches with my single stack"

    "What"?

    "Yes it's true"

"But Why?, ... we're good together and getting better all the time."

    "I know"

"Don't I practically leap out of the Ghost holster and into your hand?"

"You know you hate it when you bruise your armpit drawing that antique".

    "True"

"Have I ever asked you to wear those stupid bifocal shooting glasses?"

    "No".

"Do I make you drag around 600 pounds of ammo?"

    "No"

"Don't I gobble up those high cap mags slick and easy?"

    "Yes"

"Then why pray tell would you do this to me?".

"Mostly just for grins, but let me ask you a question"

    "OK"

"You are great for playing games, but if I ever have to shoot for real, will you be there?"

    (Silence)

"Allright, you got me. Go and shoot the old girl and get it out of your system."

    "Just one thing".

    "What's that?

    "Don't let me get dusty."

    "Not a chance"

  12. Fear not Boz,

For brother Mark too has been down the road of temptation.

I have laid eyes on his Brazos limited HIGH CAPACITY mistress.

And yea though it hast no battery powered devices it is not an object of skinny purity.

It seems that he, like brother Jim also tip-toes onto the line from time to time.

Not venturing across it into the deep darkness, but tap dancing on it, as an ironworker walks the high steel.

Let he without sin, cast the first shell casing.

  13. The tunnel will be a little more substantial that sticks on drums...

Hey, Boz I have to make the SOB clubbers reload...once a match, at least.

    "Sticks on Drums?"

    C'mon Jeremy. Get radical.

If you're gonna make obstacles how about:

Crawling on your back through the sand under barb wire dragging ammo cans.

Then up the rope and over the 10 foot barricade, then crawling on your belly through the swamp water.

Then into the slimey green mud pit where .........

    Never mind.

I was having a Parris Island flashback.

  14. Perhaps I am wrong but I was under the impression that guys like Bob Londrigan don't do general gunsmithing.

He will work on guns he built if they break, but he is too busy building guns to deal with anything else.

I highly recommend Rusty Kidd at David's gun room in Norcross, Ga.

He is the a top notch smith and has done all sorts of work on every gun I own.

  15. Yes Jim, I believe you have it all figured out.

I can see it all now so clearly.

Those days when you feel like a surgeon.

Attacking a stage with power and precision.

    Accuracy is your handmaiden.

A true disciple of John M Browning.

Then there are the days when you just need that adrenaline rush.

    Pure speed and overwhelming firepower.

    That's it.

    Yin and Yang

Why didn't I see this before?

    An epiphany of epic proportion.

  16. Not to worry steve

Notice I shot SS in that match...and on sunday also...I was FIRST in SS for both matches

In combined divisions I shot 73.54 percent...with my ancient but trusty SS

I am also slated to shoot the Double tap with SS....The HOSERS hoser match :surprise:

Hopefully you understsnd I AM a snob elitest and love my beautifull brunette(SS)

But alas I am also a SOB sinner....sometimes drawn to the dark side for a steamy encounter with my wild and wicked, Red Head..(open gun)

I walk that fine line between darkness and light ....never casting a shadow

    Jim

    Ah yes.

    Jim you are a polygamist.

You have sworn to love, honor, cherish the SS wife.

Yet, you have a mistress.

    A loud, high capacity mistress.

    I understand.

Sometimes the seduction of the dark mistress is more that mere mortals can resist.

Tip-toe across the line at your discression.

    Just don't trip on it.

  17. I posted this in the "what I hate" section (where it doesn't belong) :) Anyway, it seems there are more gun clubs not allowing IPSC matches? So, what is entailed in setting up a range for pistol matches? I'm land rich and cash poor, and really this is just an idea I've thought about in the past. How many people show up for the average match, how many would be interested in traveling, etc.?

I recently received a notice from the NRA regarding an upcoming seminar on range development.

It will be held in Orlando.

I thought about attending because I am considering buying land specifically to create an IPSC club.

As to the amount of land it would take, I suppose it would depend on how many pistol bays you wanted to set up.

I would guess a minimum of about ten acres.

    The info is as follows:

FAIRFAX, Va. - The National Rifle Association will hold a five-day Range Development & Operations Conference at the Holiday Inn - International Drive Resort in Orlando, Florida, March 29 - April 2, 2008. The course is designed for current or prospective range owners and operators, and the conference is the NRA's forum for expert training in range design, construction, operation, and management.

The conference teaches methods for either identifying or avoiding common problems associated with range engineering, administrative controls, environmental issues, and safety. Topics will include:

    • Developing business and master plans
    • Public hearings and zoning boards
    • Environmental sound
    • Insurance
    • Lead on outdoor ranges
    • OSHA lead standards
    • Range maintenance
    • Range safety

"I have attended the Range Development & Operations Conference and want to commend the NRA and its staff on an incredible job of enlightening me with the proper knowledge and information needed to start up and maintain a safe, clean gun range," said Tony Doukas of Pompano Beach, Florida, who attended a conference last year in Tampa, Florida. "Also knowing the NRA will be at your assistance with any issue you may incur in the future is a comforting and secure feeling."

Registration for the conference is $450.00 (non-refundable), which includes all conference materials and a free copy of the NRA Range Source Book on CD-ROM.

Join us for this exciting and informative five-day industry seminar!

  18. Sorry Rocket,

I'm not trying to be belligerent.

I just wanted to point out that there are circumstances that where minor could be an advantage.

They may not happen all that often but they do happen.

In the example I gave you, they were, in fact, 6 plate racks with a paper target thrown in at each shooting position.

One miss and you run your gun dry.

    Tls

  19. It can be.

Consider a plate rack with 6 steel and a paper target.

    That's an 8 shot array.

Miss one plate and you're going to slide lock.

Miss two and welcome the the static reload club.

Wouldn't you rather face that with a couple of extra rounds?

There's no minor scoring on steel.

It either goes down or it doesn't

    Tls

Well I have encountered a platerack in a match.....let's see......never. So it is a pretty remote reason to consider that as a deciding factor.

    From the 2007 Tennessee Sectional

    Stage 6 "Racks"

    Stage_6.BMP

There were paper targets behind barricades that don't show up in the picture.

Therefore, the situation I described actually happened twice on one stage at this match
