  1. Polished up one mag last night. The kid decided that he wanted to "help" Daddy last night so i didn't get much done at all. But he is awesome and it is worth the time with him! I am hoping to get the caliber conversion done tonight, and start the process of the new load set up. I am going to experiment with some bullet types and shapes to see what the gun likes. I accidnetly ordered 165 HP instead of 180's.....maybe I will see if xtreme will let me send them back. I did pick up some precision bullets from Hillside that are 180gr RN so I will try them out first and see how it goes.

Still trying to decide what to do about the hot spot on the frame.......I might just have to suck it up and get a callas on my hand. I would love a PT grip, but those are hard to come by. Maybe I will try an Extreme Shooter grip instead. I want to finish buying the things i want/need and just focus on the shooting already!

  2. Productive weekend. Made it to the range and shot another 200 rounds through the gun. Found a few hot spots for my hands. Looks like there is a sharp edge on near the intersection of the frame and the grip, right next to the grip safety. I am out of shooting shape for sure, and my hits proved that. I need some trigger pull work....I think I am snatching quite a bit.

Found a case feeder and brought that bad boy home with me! Can't wait to try it out! I am really hoping that it will improve the loading process for me quite a bit. I really just wanna shoot! I also picked up some brass and took it home and processed it as well. I am still working on the process of the wet tumbling. They are in mint condition when they come out of the tumbler, but getting them separated from the pins is a bitch and a half. Then I have to dry them. I think I will invent in a media separator soon, and work up a faster way of drying them off as well. But I am very happy with the results, so I am sticking with the wet.

Tuned the mags, followers, and the slide stop so that it will not lock back on the last round ( or with one left in the mag ) I was pretty nervous about doing it, but I am a pretty handy fella, so all is well on that front. I need to test them with live fire, but I am confident that it will be just fine. Polishing up the tubes is the next step. I started on it last night, but I was pooped so I will leave that for tonight. The tubes came from Dawsons with some light rust on them in the groves, but a quick hit on the buffing wheel seems to knock that right off. Still.....that is kinda shitty to have a new product be rusty.... I am going to slowly polish the lips of them mags as well while I am at it. But all the mags fed with no issues both times i have shot it, so I don't think that I will do much at all.

I just need to get the press converted to 40 and get loading! I have about 700 or so pieces of brass cleaned and drying now, so as soon as I get the press set up, I will start cranking them out. I have a great place to start with the load so that will be nice. The rounds RVB let me try last week, crono ok, and I have the load data, so I feel good about cranking out a bunch.

Kinda pissed now that I see the new DVC Limited STI that just came out!!! I am liking the grip on that, and the slide cuts would be nice as well. Don't care for the TiN coating, but I would deal with it!!! And to top it off, that thing is only a few hundred more than I paid for my Edge!!!! Damn my luck! Oh well.....I am gonna just march my ass right up to A class this year, even if I don't have the newest and coolest out there. I am still excited to shoot a match with mine and see how well I really can do!

  3. I can see where the slide stop is hitting the follower, but I don't want to grind off the whole thing do i? I looked at a stock STI follower and it has a huge cut out for the slide stop.

And that follower in the picture is not like the TTI that I have....it is pretty close though.

I am wondering what that "bump" on the side of the follower does. I don't want to grind it off all the way if it serves a purpose......

HELP!!!!!! I am headed back to the range tonight and I want to test the mags out!!!

  4. Mag guts showed up yesterday, and the tubes should be here by Friday. That is a good thing, because I plan on hitting the range to finish up the break in on the gun. The break in instructions from Brazzos suggests that I should get the gun a tad bit warm during the process....and the first range trip was not condusive to warmth exactly. At least a couple hundred more rounds through her should get me fairly close to the 500 mark that was suggested.

  5. Mag tubes are ordered, bullets and brass ordered and on the way....

I put the STI spacers into my CR speed mag holsters, but found out that I am missing one! So i will make a new spacer or just order one DAA Rasemaster to replace the one I can't find the spacer for. I do eventually want to replace all the CR Speed mag holsters with the DAA's but those damn things are expensive when you have to purchase 4 of them!

I did a little bit of dryfire last night, but I was pretty tired so it was just pretty informal. I am going to have to work on my grip for sure. I was feeling some hot spots that I didn't notice when I was at the range, so I am going to have to toughen up my hands a bit more before the season starts. I had to develop some callases for my M&P as well, so this is expected i suppose. I am temped to start messing with the plastic grips, but I am fighting the urge to do so untill I get a lot more rounds down range first. It is so hard to resist.......I like to tinker!

I am going to pony up and get the case feeder for my Dillion, so there is another chunck of change that I have to put down. I just don't want to spend forever at the reloading bench, and more time at the range and in dryfire.

  6. Thanks!

I see your point on the tooling......didn't think about it like that. And I am blessed to have such quality to play with. It's only money right?

I would love to make it out to Colorado to shoot a matech sometime

Thanks for the comment, and stay safe

  7. I can attest to the grip mod that he did. I was watching him shoot and that muzzle was just barely moving at all. Of course he isn't too bad of a shooter to start with, so I suppose that helps a bit.

  8. Finally shot the beast!!

The report on the gun couldn't be better. I picked up about 300 rounds of Winchester white box ammo, and went to the range to meet RVB. I was really nervous loading that first mag up, and then finally shooting it. The stock ammo fed through with no issues at all, and then I used some of RVB's reloads that he was working up for his new plastic-fantastic Glock. They were hollow points that were not loaded very long, and they shot great as well. As expected the groups were tighter with the heavier bullet, and the recoil was no big deal at all. I also was able to crono that load and it made major out of my gun as well. He was also using titegroup in those loads, so if I can come close to replicating that load and just add a grain or so for margin of error, I should be good to go. I will also need to crono that load again when it is warm out as well. k

Final report....I couldn't be happier! After firing about 75 rounds the trigger was significantly smoother than when I was first dryfiring it. I think the only adjustment I might do is just a VERY small about of the overtravel, but even then, I am going to wait a bit longer and see if i can just adapt to it. I was very scared that I was going to get one of the guns that people complain about......but so far so good with mine. I am not regreting my decision one bit, and it is nice to know that i am the only one that has ever owned this gun, and i can track all the changes that go on with it. Speaking of change, the only thing I plan on doing to it is get a different grip. I am eighter going to get a red STI grip or get a Phoenix Trinity if I can ever find one. The red grip would purely for aesthetics, and the PT would be just to add some weight and grip. I would just like my gun to stand out just a little bit without going overboard and looking tacky.

Now I am just waiting on those TTI parts to show up and get some bullets and brass ordered and I will be set!!! My holster seemed to work out much better than I expected as well. The DAA Magnetic Race Master is really a nice piece of hardware. I don't think the price is justified, but if it lasts me several years, I suppose it is worth it. It locks up nicely, fit and finish is top notch, more adjustments that you can shake a stick at, it feels secure as can be, and it releases to the draw like a dream. The only complaint is the price, but I suppose that DAA has to eat too....

A HUGE thanks goes out to RVB for all the help he gave me, and for letting me shoot some of his "Bunny Fart" loads for his plastic-fantastic gun. He was also a great source of knowledge, and he taught me a great deal about my gun. He also confirmed that my shiny new gun will group well with good loads. I was so excited that I couldn't concentrate on shooting a good group. I am such a little kid, that I was just as excited to see him shoot my gun as I was shooting it. I'm such a dork. Seriously though, thank you so much for the help. I really appreciate it.

Now I just need to get mag guts and base pads from TTI to show up, get a load worked up, and start my way up to A class this year!!! I also decided that I am going to shoot the Indiana State match, and maybe go to one other bigger match this year. That is going to be a whole new experience as well.....

So far I would recommend the Chrome Edge from Dawson Precision without question to anyone. I will keep this log updated with any issues just in case anyone else is thinking about one.

    It's On NOW!

  9. No Pics yet!! I was took busy playing with it and snuggling up in bed with it to take any pictures!

The wife was mad that I cuddled more with the gun than her last night!

  10. I got it!!!

The finish is perfect, the tolerances seem very tight, I have my holster set up fairly well, now I just need to shoot it!!!

The trigger is not what I hoped for, but I think that I will start to break it in first and then take it to a smith to have him look at everything. I am still waiting on Mag tubes, and my base pads and springs to come in from TTI. So all I have it the stock 126mm mag that it came with. I will order some bullets and brass this weekend and start the process of working up a load. I think I might ask around and see if someone has any .40 major loads that I could buy off of them to get the break in process started. I was thinking of running some stock ammo through it but I think I will ask about that before I do.... I don't know if it would be a good idea to break the gun in with ammo that I will not be using in a match.

I am glad that I made the choice to go with the Dawson gun. It looks beautiful, and the fit and finish seems to be fantastic as well. I can't wait to get it to a smith and have him make sure that everything on the inside is a purdy as the outside. Does anyone know of a good smith that is used to working on competition guns? I would also like him to look at the mags when I get them as well.

Well now the journey really begins!

1st. I'm going to FWRR this weekend to do some chrono work. if you want to come along to give it a run and try a handful (I don't have very many loaded myself) of my .40 loads you can.

This was a new gun from Dawson? Why do you feel the need to take a new gun from one of the best smiths to some local dude to look over? If I bought a gun from some local dude, I'd rather send it to Dawson to check out! :)

I can bring trigger pull guage if you'd like, also. we can look at what you don't like about it and what the weights are at different stages and see if it's just a spring tweak.

Don't over think the break-in. Shoot that tool! Nothing wrong w/ running factory ammo till you get the reloader set up....

    oh, and this:

Pics man pics! lets see it!

common, don't hold out on us w/ the gun porn.

    -rvb

Sound good to me! Give me a shout when you are going and I will tag along.

I just wanted to have someone look at the trigger for me. I Think that Dawson doesn't do much to the CRP Edge except put he extras on and test fire. I thought a smith could look at the trigger and do some polishing, and what ever other VooDoo Magic they do.

  11. I would think you can break it in with any factory ammo.

Tell us what powder you have on hand and I can give you some loads, possibly. Can't do it unless we know what powder you have. Also, what bullet are you going to use, weight and coated, FMJ, etc?

I have e3 and titegroup on hand.

I don't have any brass or bullets yet, but I have used Blue Bullets and Xtreme in the past for my 9mm.

I have my 40 Dillion dies, but I thought I should get the Bulge buster as well.\

The 180 grain bullets seem to be what most people use, but I was also curious about the 200's as well.

I know the Xtreme bullets are decent, but I was thinking about trying Berrys as well. I heard they are the best.

    Suggestions?

Well now the journey really begins!

  13. The blaster is done and on its way to me now!!! Should be at the gunshop by Thrusday for me to pick up! I am like a little kid!

My DAA Race Master Magnetic showed up Tuesday and wow is that thing nicely made! I don't think it should cost what I paid for it, but I figure that it should last me a very long time, and I will be depending on it for every match and dry fire practice, so what the heck... why not just get the best. I will slowly replace the CR speed mag pouches with the DAA metal versions over time, but with everything else that I have had to spend to get into this 2011, I think I will wait a bit on that purchase.

I just need to figure out this mag situation and wait for my reloading gear to show up so I can switch over to 40 cal.

The first phase of the diet is working out great, and I cut my caffeine by half as well. The swelling in my knee is gone, and I feel my energy starting to pick up again. Phase two will be getting back on my juice/shakes as my meals during the day, and find time to get back in the gym. The iron will wait until my new massage therapist gets the last of the knot in my back fixed. This new gal says that she can get it to go away, it is just a matter of time. The first session went well, and she fixed the majority of the issues that were keeping my in my Big Dad Chair too long, so I have hopes that she can get me back in the gym soon. If you guys don't go to a massage therapist, you are missing out. I have tried 4 different ones now, and I think i found a winner.

The trick will be setting my time up so that I can be with the kid, get to the gym, dry fire, live fire, and reload. Sounds easy enough.....

    Wish me luck!

  14. Thanks for all in input for Taran Tactical. I am asking Dawson if I can get a discount on the mags since I got the gun from them.

IF they don't hook me up, I might give the TT's a try.

The only thing that worries me is that I haven't seen many of them on 2011's.....I know on my plastic gun they were awesome, but the 2011 models don't look like they add hardly any weight. I was thinking that added weight would help the mags release.

  15. Congratulations Sporky! I plan on getting a membership to FWRRC by the months end so we can actually practice this game instead of standing and shooting at static targets, or shooting at a range that doesn't allow fast draws or rapid firing. Can't wait to see that in action.

Let me know if you need a sponsor for FWRR. Probably too late for the cut-off for the Feb meeting, but we could try to get you in at the April mtg. April starts the membership year anyway so that would be a good time to get in.

    -rvb

Thanks I will hit you up when I get a load worked up for it. I think I have enough info now to get me in a good place as far as the load making major and still being safe.

As far as FWRR goes, I think I might try to get in in April. I am a member at Hillside now, but it is pretty expensive per year.
