  1. Not really advice persay, but I noticed that what helped the most was watching myself on video.

Maybe if you filmed yourself on your next range outting we could better help with advice.

    WJM

Yeah I have a few things on video, but not the best angle or quality. I am working on doing a better job of that. I have a GoPro now, and I have a buddy with a good quality camera as well so I am going to get some better footage this year for sure. I wasn't real consistent recording last year, and the view from the top of my head is cool, but not all that helpful for breaking down my movements.

Good suggestion though. I will get small tripod for my GoPro and record my practices as well and post them up here.

    Thanks for reminding me!

  2. Trigger job...done!

Wow does that make a difference! I went and practiced indoors Sunday and I was chewing up the A zone at 15 and 20 yards! I had to use masking tape to hold the target together! I still need to work on doubles being more consistent and making my grip automatic. Dry fire will help the grip, and I think I will just need more reps to fix the doubles. I am getting more and more used to the recoil, but I still have some work to do so that I am not anticipating so much. Strangely enough, when I was shooting both eyes open, the recoil seemed to be easier to tame. Not sure what that was all about.

400 rounds later, I am feeling confident and excited. I am going to keep documenting my range trips and lessons learned and hope for the best.

Feel free to chime in anyone.......I am a sponge and I want to improve!

    Thanks for following!

  3. I had a similar issue with my Eagle. The round would be out of the magazine but stuck 1/2 or 3/4 of the way into the chamber. Sometime I could just easily push the slide into battery but sometimes it wsa straight stuck. Great suggestions above. Definitely rule out ammo and magazines.

However, the gun should be able to run factory and reloaded ammo.

Once I ruled out ammo and mags I took it to a local gun smith. It ended up being a bad extractor. Too much tension. The extractor was pushing the round into the chamber and causing the malfunctions. Once he tuned a new extractor the gun has run 100% with everything I have put through it.

Just another issue it could be.

    Good info!

I will keep my eyes on mine a bit more closely now. I wouldn't have though that the extractor could cause a malfunction like that.

    Thanks for posting that.

  4. Really sounds like ammo to me...but like everyone else said, could be a million different things.

Try the ammo first. I read somewhere else that the OAL makes a huge difference, so check that first. Then I think I would try the plink test next. I check the bulge with a strait edge and light behind it. I don't have it down to a perfect science yet, but I am getting there. I use once fired from a local range and a small amount will not pass the gauge after loading. When I look at the ones that don't pass, I do the strait edge deal and see if everything is "fairly" true.

I am also tempted to try the undersize die as well. I am just using the Dillion 40 dies now.

Let us know how it goes! And be careful!

  5. Thanks!!!

It is still pretty early in the process and we aren't telling anyone yet until we know everything is good.

That will be awesome going to the range with the kiddo! I'll be 100 years old by the time my lil ones are old enough...

No practice last night....kid wasn't feeling well after a shot from the Dr yesterday. He was feeling better as the night went on, so all is good there. I did finalize plans to take the blaster to a smith over in Logansport on Saturday. i am pretty excited for that to tell you the truth. Knowing that someone gave some TLC to my gun so I don't have to even think about it going bang at a match is going to be huge for me! All I should need to do is keep it clean and make sure the ammo is checked before the match! I plan on one of those 100 round gauges at some point, but I have already spent a small fortune and I still want to add a new grip to the mix as well. I was even thinking about a *thumb rest [generic]* too! I was dryfiring an open pistol last weekend that had a pedal on it and I really liked it! I think i could try one that is also the slide release so I don't have to drill any holes in the frame. I did read somewhere that adding a detent to it would ensure that no accidental slide catching is going on, is a good idea. If I have a good experience with this smith, then I will head back up there and have him do that as well. I have to get to loading some ammo up this week. The smith wants at least 100 rounds to test the new trigger set up. So I will take 300 rounds! HA! I can't wait to shoot it after a trigger job! It wasn't bad at all to begin with, so I can only imagine how much better will be with some adjustment! I did do some polishing on my own but nothing too serious that would effect the sear and hammer at all. It is quite a bit smoother now, and with the trigger fit with no up and down play, it was even nicer. Once the hammer and sear are ground and matched up perfectly, that should be all she wrote! No excuses from the gun, only my ability or lack there of.

I am going to drive RVB crazy when it gets warm........I am going to make him teach me to have that full auto trigger finger that he has! Gimmie all your secrets!!!

  6. Found a smith and I am headed over there this weekend. After looking at the trigger and doing some research, I think that I would feel better if I knew that someone took the time to make sure the fit was perfect so there will be no question about the safety and reliability of the blaster. Peace of mind goes a long way.

Haven't done much dry fire this week so far, but I will try to change that tonight if I can. My time is going to be limited in the future.....found out the wife has another bun in the oven......ooops.

  7. Well I have a new trigger installed, but when I took it all apart, the parts were not polished like they should be so I think I am taking it to a smith to have some TLC added to it. And that way I know the seer angles are all correct and shiny and all the good voo-doo magical stuff. I really like the shorter trigger and I really think it will improve that pulling to the left that I experienced the other day. I know that I will still have some work to do training myself as well, but at least this way I will know that the gun is doing it's part if I do mine. That will be a huge confidence builder for me. I was also able to feel the grip on a buddy's 2011 that did a reduction and stippling job.......wish I didn't do that. Now I want a different grip!!!

I didn't even get any rounds down range this weekend or load any ammo. I spent the whole time fooling with the trigger and then having someone else look at it to make sure I wasn't breaking anything. I need some range time!

Soon all the messing around with the gun will be over with and I can concentrate on the shooting....soon.

  8. I ordered some wolf 12lb springs yesterday so we will see how it goes....I will report back with how it feels.

I was looking for the weight of the stock STI Edge mainspring yesterday but I didn't come up with much.....I will try it with just the recoil spring and see how that feels.

    Thanks for all the input

  9. Not sure what the firing pin spring has to do with the recoil spring... If anything, the mainspring might affect your recoil a bit as the slide cocks the hammer...

    I use a 12.5 in a tri-topped, lightened slide..

there is also a good youtube video out there by Nic Taylor (spelling?) on tuning your 2011 recoil spring.

Sorry i'm new to the 2011 so I have to ask all the noob quesitons.

Yeah I am thinking that when the slide cocks the hammer, that is a pretty stiff resistance for sure. SO.....should I do all of those things at once, or should I do one at a time and test each seperatly?

Yep I have seen that youtube video about a million times already! Good stuff!

    You guys are awesome thanks!

Yep there are a lot of variables and each thing you change effects others. There is a lot to learn.

For what it's worth amigo here is a starting point for a stock edge, not lightened, shooting 180 gn major ammo at a nominal 170 PF.

12 lb Wolff reduced power recoil spring

17 lb main spring ( hammer spring )

    Standard firing pin spring

This is a very common set up for an edge pattern gun

Change the recoil spring every few thousand rounds

If you have any issues with light strikes, after you have ruled out hi primers/ bent or burged firing pin consider an extended firing pin such as Dawson's or limcat xl.

Hopefully this can give you a starting point, learn from here and enjoy yourself

Done deal....I am ordering the recoil spring now. I don't know what the stock mainspring is.....so do you think I should get one with that exact weight?

    You Guys Rock!

  10. Yeah I have heard of some people putting the SVI trigger on the STI bow......or they have to do some fitting of the SVI trigger into the STI grip.

I am hoping that if I get an STI trigger that there won't be as much fitting involved. I REALLY wold like the SVI, but I am not sure I wanna hack on my gun to get it to fit, and I don't currently have a smith that I know/have been to.

I'm down to head to the indoor range at Hillside any time just gimmie a shout. It only takes me about 10 minutes to make 100 rounds thanks to the case feeder on my Dillion, so even if you hit me up on short notice to shoot, I can whip up enough ammo to go!

    Let's do this!

  11. Thanks for the advice RVB. I really struggled with hand position during my practice because my index finger was fully extended when I had the pad of my finger on the trigger. So basically if the trigger was any longer, I wouldn't be able to even reach it. I was instructed earlier that there should be some bend in my trigger finger when the pad of that finger was properly on the trigger. Well......thanks to my little girly hands, I am at full extension with on gap between my finger and the frame of the gun. I am really struggling with pulling the trigger strait back......and it gets worse when I am trying to compensate for recoil and bring the sights back on target after that shot.

The trigger is only $32 bucks and I can take it back if I want.

    What do ya think?

If you think it'll help, go for it.

just dont plan on taking it back... most triggers need some fitting to even get them in the gun. and do some reading on how to install them and what to watch out for.

I'd like to see your grip first... it sounded like you were concerned more about where the beavertail landed than the trigger finger...

    -rvb

    Cool.

Yeah I have already been checking out how to do it for awhile now.

And yes about the beavertail.....I had the RO at Hillside coaching me while I was getting it sighted in. When I was lining the beavertail up with the center of my forearm, my groups closed up and recoil control got much better. But as a result, I have to stretch to get to the trigger a bit more than I would like...

  12. I have the STI insert trigger in my gun with the short, flat insert. If we want to try to get together anytime soon I can let you feel it to see if the length is better for you. you may or may not like the flat trigger compared to a curved one but itl give you an idea of the length of pull.

    You mean the SVI insert?

And yes! I would like to try it out!

    Having girl hands sucks....

  13. Thanks for the advice RVB. I really struggled with hand position during my practice because my index finger was fully extended when I had the pad of my finger on the trigger. 14. Thanks for the info guys!

I really want the look of the SVI but I need to find a smith to do that work. I am sure I could do it, but this blaster is my baby and I don't wanna mess her up

I am thinking that I will get the blank and the short and if I don't like the short STI I can get the blank and file on it myself.

Thanks for the pictures too that was awesome!

  15. I think I need a shorter trigger for my Edge.....my hands are on the small side.

So I was wondering......should I get the STI short, gunsmith blank, or try to fit an SVI in?

I really only want to do this one time and get back to shooting!!!

    Thanks in advance

  16. Nobody waned to brave the cold with me yesterday, but I went and shot at the indoor range anyway. I took 300 rounds with me. 200 with the new Zero bullet, and 100 with the Precision Delta bullets. Didn't really see any big difference in accuracy or felt recoil between the two. I think the Zero's might have been a tad bit more accurate but it was so close that I would feel confident using both of them.

I stuck a paster on the IPSC cardboard target, sent it out 10 yards, loaded the pistol up, and the first shot went straight through the center of that paster! I put the gun back down and left............we I should have anyway. I did giggle like a school girl and jump up and down like I was doing the pee pee dance. That was pretty awesome!

At 10 and 15 yards, I could keep them all in the A zone no problem. The only issue for me was the SHIT trigger pull on my part. If I had a good squeeze the round went exactly where I wanted it to go. But if I turned the speed up.....the trigger pull was shit and then some. I was checking the alignment of the beavertail to the center of my forearm every time i griped the pistol, so I know that is correct. But I was feeling like I had to stretch to get the correct finger placement on the trigger. I experimented back and forth with moving my grip and finger placement.......but I could not get a consistent pull. I wonder if a short trigger would make a difference or not? I think I am going to get a short trigger and a gunsmith blank and play around with them and see how it goes. I am worried that if i get one too short that I will be putting too much finger on the trigger and end up not having the pad of my finger in the correct place. A new STI short trigger is pretty cheap so it won't be a huge undertaking to try it out.

I did get used to the grip and I found myself wanting it to be more aggressive.....I haven't really been through any reload drills with the gun, so I don't know if more aggressive would even be a good idea or not. I really need to figure this grip thing out soon so I can train with it. Phoenix Trinity has a waiting list going now and I am freaking out on weather or not to tell them I want on it or not.....I just wish someone had them in stock so I could just pull the trigger and pick one up already. I am tempted to just get the Extreme shooters grip and move on, but I am afraid that I will spend the money and wish that I had picked up the PT instead! I just can't make up my mind!!!! HELP!

The shooting went generally well. my biggest problem what that I was shooting out the cardboard on the A zone and I had to use my masking tape to hold it all together! Now that is a good problem to have! The only flyers were from my shit trigger pull. I was doing a little bit of controlled pairs work, but I wan't really happy with my trigger pull so I went back to singles. I could tell that the front sight was not tracking consistently, and my trigger pull also had me throwing shots as well.... So I don't think I am controlling the recoil like I should and I have established that I am jerking the trigger from time to time. I think I might seriously need some coaching or getting used to this is going to take forever (RVB if you are reading this, expect a call from me about coaching me on my trigger pull).

Look out if I get my shit together with this new blaster! I am determined to make A class this year and open a lot of eyes on the range!!!

" Who is that Handsome guy shooting that STI that is kicking ass?"

That Guy is going to be me!
