  1. Trying to plan next live fire practice so I don't waste time.

    • Dot Drills (focus on the trigger squeeze and grip tension to see if I can burn in a better trigger pull) 100-150 rounds, no time but with a beep.
    • Movement drill ( maybe the 6' box drill with more than one target to work on transitions at the same time) 100 rounds
    • Easy exit modified ( I want to work on moving into a position, seeing 3 or more targets, and being able to call good shots at match speed)150 rounds, improve on time for this drill. Start at 50% speed and work on picking up the pace until I can't see the sights lift any longer.

Vision and trigger control seem to be the most urgent issues with my shooting at this moment. I really need to be able to see the sights lifting at match speed to move forward. Being honest, when I think back to the last two matches, I only saw the sights lifting a few times.  I did see sights on the hard targets really well, but I think between snatching the trigger and NOT seeing the sights lift, really cost me in points.

I am wondering how many reps it will take for me to have a Consistent and Correct trigger pull....

  2. Well the Area match could have been better, but it could have been worse too.  I had my ejector break the night before we left for the match and that was really freaking me out as you might expect.  But once the match started, I put it aside and just went on shooting.

We walked all the stages the night before and I was excited to see that all the stages seemed to be right in my wheelhouse. There were some pretty difficult shots on most of the stages as well, so it presented a challenge for sure.  l had some Mikes where I shouldn't have, but then I slayed some super hard shots as well.  I was upset pretty much the whole day because I knew that I was better than I was showing.  It was the first Level III match that I have ever shot so that was new as well.  I wasn't intimidated at all, and nerves were not an issue so that was a positive.

Two technical issues that I did manage to pin down were, Trigger snatch, and I still have some work to do on calling shots.  I think I am going to get a bit longer trigger and see if that helps out while I still work on the trigger snatch, and the shot calling is just going to take some time.  I have to keep telling my self that this is only the 2nd year that I have been seriously shooting and not to get too hard on myself.  I tend to be my worst critic most of the time.

I shot our local match and did much better than I usually To. I relaxed and just got into my game.  I had another Mag issue so I still need to sort that out, and I borked up one stage pretty good as well.  But that is much better than borking up the majority of the match.  I am learning that I need to burn the stage in early, visualize it as much as time permits, and then just mentally put myself in a relaxed state when I step up to the line.  I did that on a few stages, and it really helped my performance.

Calling shots at match speed is one thing that I believe will really bring me up a notch or two.  I am seeing the sights more and more, but I now need to call the shots more times than I am not. At this point i am not able to call each and every shot on a stage.  Seems like in practice I am making progress, but in a match I am not.  Not sure why that is, but I will keep grinding on it.

I am going to order a new gun this off season.  Not being confident in my equipment is really starting to make me angry.  I will go with a full custom ( Atlas Gunworks is the place that I am really leaning towards now )  and then replace all the guts in the Edge with EGW parts and keep it as a practice and back up gun.  The Edge hasn't been too bad really, but I should have had someone replace the guts right when I got it.  Extractor broke, ejector broke, and I am just not confident with it.  I just wanna work on my skills and not worry about the equipment...

Next big match is the Indiana 400 and I am going to put some more training time in and see how well I can do there.

As always, any training tips are appreciated.

  3. Looked again at my last match results, and I shot the classifier at A level....

I could have picked up a second with a better reload and a better transition after.  If I picked up the second, I would have been at M level....  Looks like the practice is paying off.  I only wish I would have taken that class a year earlier and then who knows where I would be now?

I still have a long way to go and a lot to improve on, but I am now enjoying the sport much more now and that is worth the cost of the class alone.

If I keep up the practice over the winter, and make it to a couple of classes that I have my eyes on, next year might be the year I turn some heads.

( Maybe a new blaster could be in the works as well.....)

Off to Area 5 tomorrow and shooting on Friday.  This will be the first area match I have ever been to.  And from looking at the stages online, it looks like the kind of match that I would do well at if I call my shots on the long targets and don't get too anxious on the short ones.

    Wish me luck!!

  4. Well the match didn't go perfectly yesterday.....

I started off really well which is something that doesn't usually happen. So that is a bonus right away.  I had issues with a mag on the next two stages so that was a total bust there.  Mag dropped out of the gun after the 2nd shot fired and it totally threw me off.  I did recover each time, but as you can guess the time suffered, and I had some Mikes in there because I was out of rounds with the mag issue.  Oh well.  I still was 11th over all after tanking because of the mags.  So I am going to take away some positives for sure.

I really only made one stupid mistake on a short hose stage....I double Miked one target because I didn't get a good enough sight picture.

I did well on the classifier as well.  Still could have done better, but it is a real improvement.

Mentally, I really focused on burning the stage plans in, and getting a sight picture while I was running it through my head.  That seemed to help.

Shot calling...I did call a D on one target, and that was a good call. I didn't make it up, because I was already transitioned onto the next target.  I still need to work on the shot calling.  One other thing is that since most of the stages were hosers, I know that I didn't have a good sight picture on a couple of targets.  When I looked at the scores, I notices that there were a TON more a zone hits than usual.  So what I am taking away from this is that I just need to keep working on calling the shots, and get to a comfortable place on calling the close ones where I am target focused.

Did some shooting on the move as well.  I didn't rush but I kept my feet moving, and it really improved my time!  The hits were good too!

The more I train, the better my "Vision" will get over time.  I am excited about that.  That was the one thing that I was the most worried about.  I really wasn't seeing the sights lift at all before, and if I took a make up shot, it was because I was looking at the target and not the sights.

I am going the the area match this weekend, so this week is going to be rough.  I need to get extra training in, and I am going to be hammered at work as well.

    Wish me luck!

If anyone has any suggestions about  some vision related training, let me know.  Anything extra will help

  5. well haven't updated this in a bit....

Took a class with Steve Anderson two weeks ago, and things are going to be changing for the better. I have a whole new way to practice that is going to really move me forward. I have been doing some dry fire and getting in live fire practice once or sometimes twice a week. Steve really identified my issues, and showed me how to correct them. It will take a while to get them all sorted out, but I am super confident that I will be a strong A by the start of next season and I will keep pushing to make M by the end of next season. Getting there on paper shouldn't be too bad, but getting to the point that I can shoot a whole match at that skill level will be another thing entirely.

I am also shooting a total of 3 majors this year as apposed to just one level 2 last season. I am going the area match in a few weeks, the Indiana 400, and I shot the Ryan Rocks match as well.

I shot a club match this last sunday after having went to the Steve Anderson class, and I can already see the difference in my mental game. I was more consistent over all and made fewer mistakes. I am still learning how to shoot a match with this new mindset and that will take some time to settle in. I am interested to see how that holds up over the course of a full higher level match.

I am more excited about the practices now. With a whole new perspective on how and what to practice, it is motivating to get to the range and practice now that I know there will be some results that I can measure. It is also nice to know that what I am practicing will actually move me forward and not just throwing pills down range.

This sport is going to be much more fun now that I have the ability to improve......

  6. He is a better shot than the Storm Trooper on his shirt, that is for sure!

Great job guys, I can't wait for my little ones to get big enough to go to the range with me!

  7. Ok thanks!

I am working after hours at work for the next few days on a project that is critical so no shooting until this weekend.

What "timing drills" are you referring to?

I am doing dot drills already at the beginning and end of my live fire practices, and I just started doing bill drills. Should I a par time and work up to going faster?

  8. Thanks for the input guys.

I took last week off and I think this weekend might be a no go for a match as well.

I needed a mental break and to get some projects done around the house so I don't have that hanging over my head.

I am going to get some ammo made up and have a nice long practice session this weekend and see if that break did me any good.

I have been working on my grip strength this week and my forearms and hands are crazy sore. I got the DFX Sports and Fitness ball, and holy crap! It is like trying to hold on to a tornado. I am hoping that If I have better control of the gun, I will be able to call shots better.

Question: My accuracy is good when going slow, but when I pick up the pace of the splits that is when things go to hell. What would be some good drills to work on that? Bill drills is where I start messing up. times are OK but the hits are poop.

    Suggestions?

  9. Well.......last weekends match was a disaster.

    Stage plans: good

    Stage Times: good

    Accuracy: HOT GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!

    Too many D's and Mikes!!!!!

I am not enjoying matches at all anymore. I don't get nervous, and I don't get tense at all. But the Mikes are ruining this for me.

I don't believe that I need to "go slower" that is a myth slow people come up with to explain being slow. I just need to increase my accuracy ( or my vision ) at speed. I run stages at about A level times so i'm not going full speed balls out all the time.

I am taking a Vogle class before a charity match pretty soon, so I am hoping that He can point out what I am doing wrong.

I just feel like I have taken two steps backwards in the past month or two and I am fed up with not shooting to my potential.

    THIS SUX!

  10. Well the wheels just about fell off at the match yesterday...

I decided to treat it like a practice before the match started so I didn't get too pissed about the day.

It was cold and windy and that didn't help matters at all.

The Mike Monster bit me more times than I want to admit. The story of the day was I would burn the stages in, and then the only thing I would concentrate on when I went up to the line was looking at the front sight. My times were slower, but I did see the sight. It was a train wreck and I am left scratching my head. I signed up for a class with Vogel so hopefully that will get me passed this sticking point. I need to man up and do more dryfire in the coming weeks no matter how boring it is, because I am getting sick of this sticking point i am in. It pisses me off, because I will have flashes of "greatness" here and there at a match, then the Mike Monster just eats me alive!

I don't need to shoot slower, I just need to get all my hits at the speed that I am going. I think my times are around the proper time for my skill level. I just need to be more consistent with the hits.

    What a frustrating hobby!!!!!!!

Maybe I will take up knitting or something...

  11. Sundays match went OK. 3rd place.

I am still dropping points due to penalties, so the accuracy practice is still going to need to continue.

Was trying something different this match. I was Super relaxed and was in a good head space. I just wanted to work on burning the stage plan, and getting more points. I succeeded on the stage planning, and I did get more points, but still need to clean up the penalties. My times were ok when I looked at the scores, but I knew I was leaving time on a few stages. But I really wanted to be more efficient and less hurried. So now if I can just speed that up just a bit I will be where I should be. I also decided to treat the local matches like training and try to put it all together at the bigger matches. I had a lot more fun when I was just treating it like training this weekend.

One more thing I noticed, I shoot pretty well moving backwards and I am getting better at shooting on the move going forwards. I threw a D on a target while moving forward, but crushed the targets that I had to shoot going backwards. I don't think I am ready to throw that into my practice yet. The general accuracy is where I am dropping the most points. So I am going to stick with practicing that for now.

I think I might be up to A class now......yikes. When the new update happens I might be there. I feel like when i am shooting to my potential, I am an A. But then I crash and burn a few stages and I am humbled again. I am encouraged to know that the 3 or so stages that I killed it on this weekend, I wasn't going even close to full speed and I was doing well. So the practice is working, it will just take time to get the rest of the way there.

So this week I will live fire Thursday for sure, and hopefully Friday or Saturday. It is the weekend for our local match and I help out by doing the registration, and spend a good chunk of time running the Nook during the day. So I usually have less time to stage prep. Getting the practice in during the week will hopefully help out with that. I think I am going to work on ONLY accuracy on one of the days this week, and then do entries and exits so that I can work on getting my feet set up better when I post up in a position. When I did my stage walk through this weekend, I noticed that I wasn't set up well in a few spots, so I worked that into the stage prep. What I mean by that is I would go full speed a few times and see where my feet ended up when I arrived at a position. I didn't spend a huge amount of time doing that, but I did make mental notes of it. I feel like it helped a little.

  12. I went to Hillside and put down about 450 rounds.

I will try to make it to some Thursday practices out there, but I get more rounds downrange if I practice myself.

I am really working on accuracy and other fundamentals, which isn't really exciting, but necessary for me to improve.

Are you going to Warsaw Sunday?

  13. Good practice session tonight.

Worked on transitions and accuracy and it went well. Really need to lock down my grip and presentation. I noticed when my grip was consistent, and I concentrated on squeezing my palms together and just squeezing with my hands everything was more solid. The sights were lining up better as well. Kind of a weird way to describe it....

Also worked on watching the front sight lift. There is is strange balance between relaxing and controlling the recoil. It will be awhile until I really get that figured out and consistent......

If the rail holds off I might try to get out again Saturday before the match on Sunday.

  14. It has been a bit....

Well, where to start? I shot a few matches early in the year so far and got the cob webs knocked loose. Now I am buckling down and getting to work.

I am now live firing every Thursday, and most Saturdays before the match. Dry fire is still a bit off and on. Two babies makes it hard to do after work because I only get a few hours with them a night before bedtime, and I want to get that quality time in. I am already gone every Sunday as it is. But I will try to do better with getting some dry practice in.

I have been spending one of my practices a week working on stage based movement and the other day just on accuracy and transition drills.

Still having Mike issues at matches. My times are where I think they should be based on my current skill level, but I am still throwing misses way too much. I am a hero or a zero at a match.

I also put a steel grip on my gun and that has changed the feel of the general index when I present the gun. The change is taking some getting used to, but I think it is a positive addition.

I also signed up for a couple of level 2 matches this year to get used to that atmosphere as well, and it gives me motivation to train harder with a goal to work towards.

I also think that I will be at or close to A class next month, but I don't think that I am constantly shooting to that level so I am not getting too excited about that. If I can just keep my speed and efficiency where they are and increase my accuracy I will be happy with myself.

Maybe keeping this up to date is going to push me as well.

  15. Just got my CK SS grip last week.

It does change the balance in a good way, but it does effect my transitions a bit. It is just a training issue that will take some time.

It is PLENTY grippy. Not a grippy as the other aggressive ones, but when you are shooting, there no movement at all, plus you don't get your hands chewed up when dry firing.

I was nervous that I wouldn't be happy with it, but so far so good. It really eats up the recoil quite a bit. I am glad that I didn't wait for a SV grip and pay the extra money as well.

Another note...I do have pretty small hands, and I don't have any issues at all with getting to the trigger. In fact, I think that the distance helps me keep from getting my trigger finger too far in.

Hope that helps someone out trying to make a decision.

  16. My question is......is the CK gun a better route than having a smith make me one? I can't justify $4000 on a limited gun, but the $3000 range is just fine. So I'm asking if any smith's have seen one in the wild and can comment on the fit of the gun? Every time I get a quote on a custom it is $4000 or more. I have a Dawsons Edge now and it is a shooter, but I worry about the STI parts inside. Already replaced the extractor, and after 10000 rounds or so I think it is looser than I would like. All I really care about is getting quality parts I can rely on, and some slide lightning to help with recoil management and faster 2nd shots. I shoot USPSA and I am going g to a match every weekend and live fire practice at least once a week. So a new blaster is going to see some miles. Any input would be helpful
