Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I picked up a contour roam2 the other day and rigged a ear pro mount for it and a strap mount to wear over my hat. Works good for first person POV so far in practice. Has a standard threaded mount on bottom so it can be on tripod as well. Used tripod for some practice and it did fine for that. It's idiot proof which is great for me. At matches I'll pass along my iPhone to a friend to film as well for different perspective. Using the contour in first real match this weekend so will see how it goes.
  2. A good, inexpensive lightweight sling I found and like is the sling from Frank Proctor. Sells them in his store off his website. Do a google search for way of the gun proctor sling. Uses 550 cord loops for quick low profile attachment. I used it with only the 550 cord for while with no problems but then installed qd swivels on it cause then I can snap it into buttstock on rifle and the rail. I have a Troy low profile rail mount at 9 o'clock on my rail that when the sling is not in use acts as a good hand reference point for me. Good sling and concept and very easy to mount to any long gun.
  3. Easiest and cheapest is index cards with the high viz painters tape like chills mentioned for verifying zero. There's a bunch online you can print out for free as well. But I tend to use 3x5 and 5x7 index cards for most all my practice sessions with rifle and pistol. They're cheap and easy which works for me.
  4. I have an ADM mount for my viper PST 1-4 and when I first got everything setup it was very tight and no problems with returning to zero. Shot it some more and the levers that lock the scope got broken in and there was a little play in it. Been shooting it since then and no problems after adjusting the locking nuts on it now.
  5. Hey Forr4 I'm just getting started myself so I haven't figured out who has matches when just yet. My first visit to forest lake will be next weekend.
  6. Jayhkr There might only be official idpa but try to find a local forum or group to ask around in for local matches or leagues. That's how I got started doing action pistol. Closest thing to me that's official is a little over two hours away.
  7. To toss in my two cents from a rookie is to bug the hell out of anyone you may know that shoots 3gun. Ask them what they like and don't like. Also most anyone at a match is more than willing to let you look over or even try on the gear they run and will honestly tell you what they think of it. It's intimidating to try and decide cause it's not cheap to get started. There's always a website somewhere running a special so browse the web as much as you can to look for deals. I ended up with a blade tech cr speed belt, blade tech DOH holster (then removed the drop part) and 2 pistol mag pouches and 1 rifle pouch. The belt I ordered as a 38 cause I wear 34-36 jeans and it had a ton of overlap so I broke out a pair of snips and cut 3" off the inner and outer belt and now it fits perfect with about 4" overlap. I decided on the EZ8 shotshell caddies and like them a lot so far.
  8. +1 on this Range trip day or two before and then cleaned afterwards before they go in the gun safe. On the JM 930 I will use CLP to clean everything but on the entire gas system after it is cleaned well and looks shiny again it is rubbed almost dry before reassembly.
  9. Yeah it's a rush for sure. I'm definitely rookie status and the shotgun is going to be my biggest challenge. Practice makes perfect and I've got some ideas for some drills I could do at the local range when I can make time to get there. I have a timer that I used a lot to get better at pistol so I'll be using that for some shotgun training.
  10. No but I'll be at forest lake next weekend for a memorial shoot for a friend of mine.
  11. I ordered up a pair of the EZ8 units and tried them out at my intro to 3gun match. My only criticism of them is my own fault. They allow you to do the load 2 "ice pick" method as well as the load 4 technique. So I practiced both methods strong hand trying to decide which was quicker / easier for me. Problem with that is I did a brain dump when the buzzer went off to start the stage and I messed up reloading. The EZ8's are a nice product and I like them a lot, but stick with just one reload style and practice that until you've got it down.
  12. Thanks Alma! I think that was part of my problem yesterday. I did the walk thru but was counting shots more than anything and didn't mimic anything. I need to work on more reloading practice so that way when the timer beeps and I get the adrenaline rush and my brain goes to mush I have muscle memory to help me out.
  13. I tried the velcro only route and even just in practice it would move too much for my liking. So I did a bunch of different angles and positions to make sure it was exactly where I wanted it. Drilled and mounted in my mossberg and ran it yesterday in my intro to 3gun class and it was definitely worth it.
  14. Well I've been on the fence for so long I decided this was the year to try out 3gun. I've done local action pistol style matches for a couple years now and they were a blast but I'm so glad I got off the fence and tried out 3gun. I pieced everything together and this is my current setup. CR speed blade tech belt, blade tech holster and rifle / pistol mag pouches. Two EZ8 shotshell caddies. Rifle is Smith & Wesson M&P Vtac (got a great deal and has good trigger and free float barrel an rail that I like) with a vortex PST 1-4 scope. Pistol is S&W M&P pro 5" 9mm with small backstrap and stipple job. Have 10-8 basepads (they're smaller, aluminum and fit my hand better than factory ones). Shotgun is a Mossberg JM 930 pro with a matchsaverz. Yesterday was my intro class to three gun. We had some classroom time discussing safety, classifications, rules, etc. There was one stage setup for us to run and we walked through it, got to ask questions then gave it a go. Afterwards we talked about things we noticed and more importantly the guys that helped set the day up talked with us about things they noticed. Then we ran it a second time. I took a little over 30 seconds off my time between going through the stage twice. I learned that I need to practice just one style shotgun reloading cause under the timer my brain turned to mush and while in my head I would think "ok turn shotgun an load two" my body would raise shotgun to load four. Overall I had an absolute blast and I can't wait until my first real match next weekend! Just figured I would pass it along to anyone reading this forum as a guest or anyone on the fence. If you think pistol matches are fun, definitely give 3gun a try!
